Find Yourself (MJCC2013)

Description
This is my first post in over a year and a half. It's been a rough 2013 and frankly the title says it all. This is the year I have to find myself… Not sure how I'm gonna do that but it is what must be done. I am still searching...

Find Yourself by Dajama had been uploaded about two weeks before I joined Macjams. I was still a newbie struggling to find my way around and one day I ventured into the forums and there was a post about cool songs and Composer Clark recommended "Find Yourself" by Dajama. So I went over and took a listen and I have never been the same!

It was this song that made me realize that MacJams encapsulates musicians that I personally think are far better than the crap being signed these days by the big labels. I use this song as my "high-bar". IE if I can ever write and record a song this good I'll die a happy man.

The original by Dajama has it all. Great guitar work, awesome lyrics, superb vocals and a sound that just makes you come back and listen again and again.

I'm not very good at my own music and the thought of trying to cover someone else's music is terrifying. But over the years I've come to know Dajama and love his work so I took a chance and asked if he would mind if I gave it a shot. Surprisingly he
said sure!

I know I'll never come close to the original so this is my feeble attempt to cover a MacJams classic:

Find Yourself
http://www.macjams.com/song/39692

About my version:

First go and listen, fav, and comment on Dajama's original version. It deserves far more attention than it has received!

I decided I wanted to go for a big acoustic sound without losing the original character of the song. I also decided that I could never come up with a better guitar lead than the original song so I did my best to replicate the lead. I fell pretty far short but it was the best I could do after about 20,000 takes!

I also have been watching far too much of The Voice because I thought I could just sing. Yet every time I tried I realized just how awful I really am. (sigh)...

On this song:

6 acoustic guitar tracks using my 1978 Ovation Balladier and a Seymour Duncan pickup.
During the start there is one picking track and one strum track.
Then during the fuller parts of the song there are are left and right doubled strum tracks (4 tracks total)
3 lead electric guitar tracks through Line6 Pod Farm
1 accent electric guitar track in the choruses also through Line6 Pod Farm
1 picked electric guitar track for the exit heavily effected through Line6 Pod Farm
2 organ tracks for fullness and to add to the middle verse sound
1 Electric bass track hand played on my Yamaha electric bass
1 Piano track during the first verse and remainder of the tune
1 Drum track - Midi drums patterned after a popular pattern with a few custom breaks and changes
5 Vocal tracks - I'm a horrible singer so I needed the support!
(1 Vocal track containing Expresso Cat trills and purrs *** see below)

I am deeply indebted to Dajama for letting me hack up his killer tune and also to alackbass (Andrew) for some critical and constructive early listens to help make this as good as it good be. Thank you Dajama and Andrew! You guys are the best!

Lastly, I am hoping for Dajama's return soon to MacJams. He is alive and well but extremely busy with life. I hope he finds the time to come back soon. The place is simply not the same without a regular Dajama post!

The Expresso Cat Track:

During probably my best vocal take out of about 12,000 tries my expresso colored cat decided it was time either to tell me how much she hated my singing or perhaps that she was overdue for a treat. She is a very vocal cat and trills all the time to announce her presence. During the take she hopped up on the back of my shoulders and trilled away in a happy little kitten voice, her trills rolling in to a gentle cat meow.

I being the dedicated amateur musician kept right on singing!

The doorbell rang after I finished the take luckily and I forgot about the possible cat trills. It wasn't until I was going through each track trying to eq down the Sssss sounds that I listened to my take and heard "purrrrrrrt purrrrreeeeow…." and some purring. Well it was too good of a take on my part to worry about so I just left it in. Luckily it is during some of the louder parts of the music so you really can't hear it but made me smile! My expresso cat has a track!

Here is the expresso cat:

Great work Mark. Your hard work really pays off. Very high production standards here. Why aren't you and dajama filling up the radio waves? Thanks.

It's
great to hear a new song from you Mark.
This is a wonderful version of David's song, another one that I was not aware of until now, so thanks for that.
Great production, I really like your lush acoustic guitars and a fine vocal performance.
I love the guitar solos, excellent work and very much enjoyed.

Mark you have done a fabulous production on this ... the acoustic guitars sound so good in the mix and that subtle organ is a layer of tastiness ...
The hard work has paid off ... ! It's so easy to be your own worst critic but from the outside listening in the vocals sound great! Nice lead ... everything about this mix is quite professional sounding. Great job!

Find Yourself (MJCC2013)
Mark, this is such fabulous work. An excellent recording of an equally excellent song. First of all I can't believe you got that guitar tone with an Ovation and a pickup! It sounds like a fine all wood guitar with expensive mics on it. I love that picking part in the first verse. And you played it flawlessly. Not an easy thing at all. Outstanding production and arrangement. The keyboard textures in the first verse and electric lines in the chorus are well done and sit perfectly in the mix. Great drum track. I'm glad you brought your lead solos out front a bit more than the earlier mixes. Speaking of which, the mix and master are outstanding.

To the vocal. You are way too hard on yourself regarding your vocal abilities. The vocals here are very well done. Your pitch is good and the performance is clear allowing the lyrics (the real meat of the song) to shine through. I like that you stayed within yourself. There's no attempt here to be a power rock singer. The laid back breathy delivery works for the song as does the double tracking.

It seems we live in an age where if one couldn't be a finalist on The Voice or American Idol then they are just not considered a quality singer. How many of our rock idols would have failed to make it past the first week if those shows existed in the 60s or 70s. Would Bob Dylan ever had gotten a record deal?

There are things we can do to expand our range and become better singers. But I think for most of us, the thing we hate most about our own voice is the timbre. It took me years to accept the timbre of my voice and let it be what it is knowing full well I'll never be a great singer. But if I want lyrics I've written to be heard then I have to be willing to sing them (for better or worse). Folks who don't like the sound don't have to listen. The lyrics of this song are worthy of being sung over and over again! And you've done a fine job singing them.

Hi Andrew
Well you know how much you helped. I worked hard on the guitar. Spent quite a bit of time adjusting the height and position of the pickup and my older Ovation tends to sound a little fuller than the newer versions in my old ears.

You raise a good point about The Voice... LOL... I'd love to flash back 40 years and have Bob Dylan singing to their backs... LOL I'm cracking up just thinking about it...

Waiting patiently for your entry!

First up, great choice of song, Mark. And great to hear a new post from you. Sounds like you do need to work out a way to find yourself and get back into music on a regular basis. You are too good at it to let it slip away.
Lovely acoustic tone to kick things off and some fine picking. The subtle effect on your vocals works really well and the change up is seamless. Funnily enough, the "fatter" section doesn't sound anywhere like the number of number of guitar and organ tracks that you mention. This is a tribute to your mixing skills. It just has a solid, full sound without being over the top. Nice outro solo, too.
I am headed to the original now. Fine post. Take care, Peter.

Hi Peter
Thanks so much. I spent a great deal of time on the guitar layering... I must have listened to this damn song a million times in all kinds of phones. I was looking for a few things to stand out and everything else to add depth.

I will say that I'm completely blown away by your take on Cool Water. I have that song as a fav of mine and now your's will sit right along side. I just listened to your piece probably 5 times in a row and I want to keep listening... This is when auto-repeat is nice. I'm listing to your tasty finger work on the guitar and that solo... oh wow oh wow... It feels like you did it in a small valley... it's so crisp but has just the exact right amount of echo. Nicely done!

Mark, this is EXCELLENT!!! all this "I have a terrible voice, and I'm not a good musician" is so off base! I hope you can listen to this and just hear how talented you really are. Your voice blends beautifully in this song, your guitar work is excellent - love those cool echo effects, the vocals in the back, in the front - this is fabulous! Loving the guitar solo work, and the fact that kitty is in there trilling makes this an extra special gem. Congrats on the post and all the hard work that clearly paid off in spades! Wonderful to have a post from you again - thanks for the treat!

The big three...
What a huge hit needs is (1) great music writing, (2) great music performance, and (3) a cat... and I just checked, this has all 3!

That initial acoustic lead-in is delicious, and your gentle singing fits in just great to this, I think. You picked a great song, and did it justice, and should be standing tall now, as that's a high bar indeed!

I got a bit teary reading about ExpressoCC, as the photo (and behavior of jumping up onto my shoulders and purring loudly) reminds me of my late cat "Sushi", whom I had for 19 years (even before I had kids)... still miss him. And I miss you, so it was great to hear something from you again! I've sent you a couple e-mails recently, say hi when you get a chance! I too have been swamped, but hope to get back to MJ soon.
ttfn,
Drakonis

Sweet
Very cool, my friend. I especially like the slower buildup at the beginning, with those chords left to ring. The sound of that acoustic is just sweet! In fact the sound of the whole song is excellent - great mixing and production values. I like the approach to the vocal, too; you might doubt your own vocal ability - who doesn't! - but the evidence is there for all to hear! Thanks for your kind words about the song; i truly appreciate that the song resonates for you. What more can a songwriter ask for? Thanks also for choosing to spend so much time and creative effort covering it. It's always interesting to hear a different take on something you've created, especially when it's done with soul, and this has soul! Who knows when the stars will align and give me enough breathing space to become active on Macjams again, but you never know - stranger things have happened at sea...Peace.

Well done, Mark! Very classic rock feeling - I hear shades of Moody Blues, and maybe a little Simon and Garfunkel thrown in as well. The song is actually pretty cool - and your arrangement and take on it is excellent. This is a work you can be very proud of - enjoyed!

You really beat yourself up too much.
This is a truly fine cover. I went and listen to the original first, per your instructions, and I gotta tell you, I actually enjoyed yours more. You really made it your own. The picking is superb, and I like the denseness and imagination of the arrangement. I really only have one suggestion; and that would be to try and have the vocal EQ curve match the guitars more closely (a little more edge, a little less fatness in the upper mids, and a little more oomph on the bottom for "substance"). The instrumental track is all finely blended, but your singing is a little displaced sonically, like you're trying to hide it. Don't, you sing with passion, authority, and personality. Terrific job!!

Beautiful sound
for starters. Dave has posted some great tunes, and you definitely do this one justice. I love the clarity on the acoustic guitar. Drums sound perfect, organ sits beautifully in the mix. I don't know why you put your vocals down, they sound really nice to me. You've managed to keep enough of Dave's style that it still sounds like a Dajama tune, but added a lush treatment which makes this especially easy on the ear. I think the cat should have been mixed bigger though :)
Excellent post!

Mission achieved and then some
Mark, your personal touch on this tune is really what makes it work. Your singing is much better than your head tells you. I find it a soothing voice, which kind matches the theme of the tune. A voice of soft encouragement, which is not too forceful, in fact, a voice of the conscience which would help propel one into a confident action to the next step.
The recording was done nicely too.

Find Yourself
I'd say you're getting warm, Mark. This doesn't feel it is without an understanding of who or what you are. For one, you are someone who loves what he does, so you do it well. I enjoyed this a lot. I'd say it's time to start cranking them out again.

Mark, mark, mark. Yes you are too hard on yourself. Hopefully tough years come and go. they do for me.! your timing on this is spot on. Your vocals have a depth that is not easy to capture and you have found a way sonicly. this is a very professional sounding recording. I hope you keep posting and writing ...please
