Description
It’s been a hard year …. My elderly parents are both really struggling, and our family has entered a new phase where my sibs and I are increasingly taking on the “business” of their day to day lives, trying to ease things for them. At the same time, our 15 year old dog Waverly (aka “Wave”) is in the very, very last days of his sweet little life. These are of course, all natural and expected losses in every person’s lifetime, but knowing that doesn’t make it one bit easier.

I’ve been working on this song off and on for months. Not surprisingly, I haven’t had much time to dedicate to recording and orchestrating music, although daily piano playing continues to be part of my own emotional therapy and general sanity retention. So it’s taken a long time for this to gel, and an even longer time for me to feel able to try opening Logic and the Ivory piano software again, and see if I could remember how to do anything (ANYTHING!). I finally got it recorded last week and slowly the various steps and tips and tricks in Logic have been (somewhat) coming back to me – at least enough to get a solo piano piece done. I plan to orchestrate this next – ideally I can get right to it while my brain is still in this mode. But we’ll have to see when, or how, or if the time presents itself any time in the near future.

A few weeks ago, I realized how much I now associate this piece with life transition and loss - thus the title. It’s dedicated to the pending departure of our beloved little doggie. But in a larger sense, it’s about both celebrating lives well lived and also just being present with what it means to say goodbye to those we love – even when they’re still here. ***Special thanks to Andrew (alackbass) for the feedback and encouragement!

I posted this video in the forums back in May, showing this song in progress. I'm reposting it here for anyone interested in the progression from that version to the completed (audio) version above. (Or just if you like watching the "mirrored hands" effect!) The video was recorded on my Yamaha C7 using the iPhone! (who knew?)

exquisite
and perfect, which I knew it would be when I got the notification you'd posted a new piece! Words are a lesser music and do not suffice to describe the experience of listening to this, Magnatone, but I will say YOUR words in the song description and YOUR music created a feast of sentiment in me. Brilliance captured in notes.

Your best yet!
Karen, this is a lovely tribute! Beautiful piano playing as always. Your musical material continues to develop; the chord structures and melodies are quite nice, and "hang together" very well. BRAVA for a great performance.

I especially liked the parts where you slowed down between sections. I encourage you to explore more rubato tempos even further; allowing your music to breathe with more freedom. I would have liked to hear this excellent piece a bit slower in spots.

Very effective build-up and climax towards the end, with more fortissimo chords. It vividly portrays your emotions, your love, your frustrations. Yet there is strength.

The ending left one anticipating sad, challenging events to come. It could benefit from a slightly slower finish, perhaps.

Best wishes for dealing with all of your current life's challenges! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful piano playing with us. Your solo piano tracks are top-notch!

Beautiful music, deep, soulful, filled with a positive, optimistic vibe. And impassioned! Many moods here, all of them beautiful.

Interesting… I just read your description after writing the above and it all makes sense. Not knowing about the backstory as I was listening, I still heard the depth, the joy, and some sadness there.

And, of course, impressive, nimble, and expressive performance by you, as usual!

Standing ovation, brava from me.

So much introspection....
the "back story" is hardly necessary to understand this very poignant song, Karen. It is full of your heart, played so beautifully in every note, every measure. This is not only a treasure as it is also a unique, marvelous gift that you give to your parents as well as to all others who hear it. Ironic, isn't it, that sad, hard times often bring out beauty that is otherwise hidden...both in the music and in those whom we love.

Beautiful. A particularly emotional moment in this piece comes at 3:40, when you - quite effortlessly - switch into a synchopated mode for the chord progression, and it's really quite fabulous. Isn't it interesting how emotional pain brings out the very best in us - as artists, as well as human beings. Loved it, Karen!

This beautiful, emotional piece really touched a chord with me, Karen, especially in light of the back story. We very recently had to have our much loved 16 year old white labrador, Tess, put down because she was no longer able to live her life with some dignity. It was a tough family decision but, in the end, it was all about what was best for her, and not what was best for us. To me, this composition strikes a fine balance between the sadness of the moment and remembrance of the years of joy our dog brought us. Thank you. Hang in there. Regards, Peter.

Wow Karen ... music with such feeling. Playing music is the best therapy and it saves a lot of money on therapists .... it's as if you have taken all you have and let it come out of your fingers on those keys. Sadness, angst, joy ... it all comes across through the dynamics of how you hit those keys ... hard and intense and then soft and sustained. A wonderful build and the end just blew me away ... gave me goosebumps. A wonderful piece ... candy for the soul ... art for the ears.

Ah, Karen,
The goodbyes take such a toll and the heart breaks anew each time we anticipate a goodbye, even before it happens. Time doesn't stand still but it can be held captive in a piece of music that is played with such focus and investment as this piece.

I used to explain to my kids that I would take mental snapshots of moments of happiness. To this day, I can recall them and that is value in memory. As long as you are here, those moments are here, just for the asking.

So, this effectively replays all your emotions and shows your strength through it all and enjoins us to share with you and stand by you because this is the human experience.

It is remarkable, endearing and enduring. What an artist you are. Thank you.

Beautiful
Just to let you know you're not alone. My wife and I are in a similar boat. We lost Miss Kitty last week, she was 15+ years old and it was hard to watch her never give up but shut down slowly. The in-laws in AZ need our assistance. We moved them down to Tucson from their dream home in the White Mountains. Now we have to figure out how to commute back and forth from Texas to Arizona. It looks as though we may have to sell our home here in Texas and move to Arizona and at our age it's a little more daring rather than when we were younger and chances were easier to take. There is immediate family here and some have issues as well. We don't really know what to do at this point. I could go on but I know you have your own issues. I hope the best for you and your future endeavors. As far as the music... so emotionally beautiful, thanks for sharing.

Waving, not drowning.
Lovely! And I'm very much looking forward to the orchestrated version.
This is beautifully played, and you get a lot of colors from your instrument; I can definitely hear where you would want a fuller palette, though. After 1:18 things begin to get a bit George Winston-y (not a slight: his relentless arpeggiating has a very specific emotional gravity), and my thoughts began to tend away from the personal and toward the abstract. As is, this seems to take the viewpoint of the ones who will be left behind after the waving has ceased, which is certainly as it should be. Courage, dear.

Love,

MoM

Karen,
I can definitely associate with those feelings you mention above..... this growing older is a very sad thing at times and very trying, but one has to push on and think positively, which I think you are already doing from what you say. I'm now the eldest in my family now and when I get those phone calls asking if I've made a Will yet, it can be quite depressing. I wouldn't have another animal after my last ones either, because of the hurt of loosing them.
This piece is lovely; beautifully played and full of the emotions and maybe pent up frustration you've been feeling of late..... I love the title for this too....it puts a softer edge to it all..... very apt, regards M

Lovely work Karen. The blend of emotions is skillfully woven and as others have said your treatment sings the story without need for explanation. To list the qualities sullies your nuanced performance since the music conveys more than pages of text. This is inspiring to say the least and a gift for us all. If you never took an orchestration further than this capture you would still have enriched our lives greatly.

Be well Karen, and thank you for the download.

Absolutely beautiful....
After reading your description (life/lives intertwined and love shared, accepting loss as a part of life, with grace, and knowing that all human souls share a common bond of empathy with you,) your music made me feel as though you were inviting each listener into your beautiful and deeply personal soundtrack of a life/lives well lived; each individual note of your poignant memories weaving melody and harmony together, rewinding the passage of time, and embroidering each of those precious keepsake moments, with heartstrings of love and remembrance, into a very unique and personal 'crazy quilt' slide show that lives in each and every individual heart; a truly blessed gift that comforts us in moments of quiet reverie, or happy shared reflection for a lifetime, which, I believe, your music composition captured so well. And since I read your description first, during the music, I imagined Waverly, throughout a dog's wonderful life creating happy family memories for your family's own 'memory' quilts. And, not knowing what Waverly looks like, in my mind I had to substitute my own long ago wonderful memories of several beloved dogs, ~ they were very good and happy memories that I haven't thought of in a while Thanks )

I too am facing this transition with my mom - and the piece plays to my heart. She moved in with us 5 months ago and it is hard, yet sweet, in all aspects. Music is such a healer. Thanks for sharing.

My Parents
both went early and fairly quickly however what they left behind still has not healed completely. Now almost 20 years after their passing I still find myself feeling very alone in this big world. I have a sister and we are close but we don't talk very often. I've found my comfort in my amazing wife, I still don't know why she's still here sometimes, and my son and my animals. The last 3 years have been extremely tough animal wise with the lose of some young ones that went before their time and my beloved choco lab that I never expected to love as much as I did.

Your piece makes me weep both with sadness and joy. The sadness is for those I've lost. The joy is for those I had the privilege to know.

I wish you the best Karen. Tough times always lead to good memories and good memories are what keeps this world alive.

Your music speaks volumes of your feelings and emotions and it is well received as always.

Wondrous
VicD said it best...with touches of angst and turmoil thrown in. All in all an amazing capture of the mass of emotions that are at work at such times and how you drift between them musically as well as one does in reality, is a remarkable achievement to capture so well. Simply amazing Karen.

This really hits home for me - we're leaving dubai and unfortunately we're not allowed to take more than three pets home with us, so we're having to say goodbye for three of our six cats and find them homes.

Great playing
It's only knowing how good you are at orchestrating that keeps me from saying that this beautiful piano playing is more than enough. All the emotion comes through already, without strings and percussion etc. But now, well, I'm looking forward to that version too!

Thanks for sharing your music and your thoughts,
Henke

As always
your music is stellar, but I also really enjoyed reading the description . Not only is the music quite pleasing listen to but the description about "celebrating lives well lived" loved that terminology. For me one of the hardest things to deal with in your songs is to look at all the fans and to know I don't quite measure up :) Hey, I give it my best effort. You are the great exemplar here at MJ. Listening to and commenting on so many tunes just being logical in your statements, professional. Truly one of the heroines of this site. maybe "THE Heroine" I just want to thank you for your encouragements to some of the tunes I've done. It means a lot. Way to Go

It's kind of funny when I look at all your fans for each tune, it's like looking up at Mt Evrerest. My neck hurts :)

Karen,
Immediately the rush of beauty that I always feel from your compositions and playing came back like a friend who I haven't seen in years. Your compositions are so intimate and filled with emotional color. You, my dear are one talented cookie! I have to tell you this. I have not felt that chest swelling emotional sigh in so very long. I used to get it when listening to the my favorite classical symphonies (eg Tchaikovsky's Pathétique). I get it when I listen to this piece. 'Nuff said.

wow
great playing. amazing writing! truly! beautiful work. if i'm honest, i'm not the biggest fan of the turnaround at 3:21 (sounds like a seventh or something). feels a little baroque in an otherwise contemporary piece. but it adds tension and i didn't see it coming - which reflects life, if you think about it. please understand where i'm coming from - this is the tiniest of nit-picks. your song is outstanding. possibly the most beautiful (certainly most melancholy) work i've heard on macjams.
