Description
Quite a few years ago now, before I started recording with real instruments, professional sound libraries and my own little home studio, all I had was this small $99 midi keyboard attached to my work computer and a free copy of Garageband. Every once in a while friends would ask for a soundtrack for podcasts or video presentations and I'd sit down and finish a track within a few hours and then go home.

Around that time I started posting here on MacJams. And obviously not all that much has changed since then, but this song is one of those humble but inspired sessions.

I love the feel of this. The introduction is full of gentle tension - an awakening. I like the sound of the intruments you are using. I imagine your friends would be very pleased with this gift. Much enjoyed!

Thanks Philip!
Appreciate it. I tried using Indian instruments like sitar, tabla and and an Indian Bansuri flute. The piece itself is of course 'Western' and has none of the beautiful complexity and meter associated with traditional Indian music.

Gentle, uplifting piece, Pari. Lovely choice of instruments and a warm, organic mix. Evocative and inspiring. Thanks, Peter.

It has the calm, open, positive feeling that I associate with several other pieces of yours. You do a great job with this genre! Very cinematic; I can easily imagine scenery for this. I'm curious about the process, though; I gather from your description that you did this all in GB? Did you use the pencil tool, and/or loops? Did you use GB World Music jampack? I've started getting into GB in the last couple of years, and am amazed by what it can do, but I don't have any jampacks yet.

Hi Clark!
Thanks for taking the time and for your kind words! Yes, I used Garageband and I believe I had the 'World Music' jampack at the time - that's where the flute and sitar are from. The process was very intuitive and simple - I believe to have started with the synth drone and chords, then the percussion, sitar and ultimately the flute solo. I didn't use loops and use the pencil tool mainly to correct imperfections or quantizing notes if appropriate. All played in via midi.

The nice thing about Garageband is that you can just start making music without having to read any manual. Later you can still import projects into Logic, which then helps you understand where Logic puts the effect channels etc (Logic does gives you a much more transparent and punchy mix than Garageband, at least the version I had used).

JamPacks should be cheap nowadays and they are fun to use. Go for it!

Rich and enticing
What an atractive piece - I love all the sounds you've used to make this so rich and deep. I've been trying to find a nice flute sound for a couple of hours this morning, and eventually gave up. It sounds perfect. Everything fits so well and sets up a tangible atmosphere. I'm very impressed by this one.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Thank you Neil.
That's such a nice and generous comment. It's an old piece, but I guess with music it's not always technical skill but also the inspiration behind it that gives a track a certain feel. If I remember correctly the flute sound is from the World Music Jam Pack - could be the Indian Bansuri flute.

Rich and full. Beautiful lush sounds. The marimba is a lovely touch. Sounds like there's one in there anyway! The dobro [is it?] guitar and sitar sit next to each really well. Very nice. Real "world" music, what ever that actually is!

Beautiful choice of instruments and a somewhat Celtic flavour, if I may say so. Appropriate for the title! I've downloaded this, thank you.

The best way of obtaining all the jampacks, btw, is to buy MainStage from the app store. The cost is only $30 and you can download ALL the jampacks once you've opened it. Big download! You'll want to do it overnight maybe, unless you have a super fast connection.

Cool idea about the jampacks - I hope Clark is reading this. Your (latest) interpretation of Chopin's Nocturne is really nice btw.

This is very uplifting. Your music and places like that in the song art help to make peak experiences. Uplifting. Top moments in your life. Sort of... uplifting.

As beautiful as ever.

From on high
The clarity of what you share on MJ is always superb, the ear behind the craft so noble and graceful. You present space then fill it up with spirit clouds and living breath. Dreams and hopes dance together, spinning out and falling in. I love this...

Wow Pari, you have an ability to create these wide open spaces that are transportive and filled with wonder. I see from your comments to Clark that this was all in GB which is really impressive. The clarity is astounding, and your choice of instrumentation has a harmonious relationship among the voices.

Thanks for the download too!

Rare earth...
Love the world music feel, with exotic Eastern instruments melded into western harmonic sensibilities. If this had a harp in it, it could easily be from an Andreas Vollenweider record. No higher compliment could I offer. This is complex, driven, and very soul-satisfying music.

I've come across this name many times and haven't really listened to his music yet - thanks so much for your encouragement - and the idea to check out his work. 'Soul-satisfying'...one day maybe! In a few hundred years;)

Oh, that flute-whistle!!!
When it breaks out from that mellow soundbed, it's just like some mystical thing that comes from another world altogether. I just love the feeling of this track with its mellow underpinnings and the gentle roll you give to it. It's almost like seeing the landscape you are describing, but seeing it with sound. This is quite a special track even though you feel it comes from the humblest of beginnings. Perhaps that's why it so effective in the first place. There's nothing complicated here. Just a sense of purity and peace that pervades the whole scene. Beautiful.

Thank you Paul!
Comments like this are so reassuring - I think most of us don't create music for an audience, but it's such a joy to get feedback like this. I believe you're right about the simplicity of the track, at that time I had neither a concept nor expectation for a track. You've got such a subtle sense to pick up on those things.

I finally got a 'real' flute a few months ago! Still learning (here is a first recording: www.parichayaka.com/posts/pennyforyour-thought/

marimba
Somebody else pointed out the marimba - I had to listen to it again to realize that the 'Western' musical approach aside, I didn't even stick to an 'Indian' instrumentation! So glad you liked it though.

For an ant a water drop is gigantic. It's similar when I do 'epic' music. In this case I think it's something within you that's vast. If this track inspired that even a little bit I'd be so honored!

i could sitar and listen all evening
such an interesting piece, it has a bit of the celtic drone-sound, but with a sitar replacing the bagpipe... making it sound unmistakably from "somewhere else" entirely. the music and wonderful photo together inspire a giddy top-of-the-world feeling... thank you for helping me rise above it all, very nice.

Faved a while back
but once again either I forgot to comment or it got lost. Actually I think the issue is this music. I mean... well... you listen and start typing in your comment then you just forget about all reality as you listen and probably forget about your wife, your job, that cheese burger 1/2 eaten on the plate... Life changing...

So sorry... this time I commented BEFORE I started listening so I couldn't get so relaxed and meditate as to think the "Post Comment" button would be pushed by those glorious dancing images I see in my head.
