Description
As I was composing this, I envisioned 'life' as a white-water raft excursion down the Colorado River. It's a little over nine minutes long.

Amazing
This is beautiful! What samples are you using for the orchestra? Great composition and very good dynamics all the way through.

A lot of beauty in this.
Tons of details and a steady stream of developmental ideas. It's educational as well as lively and entertaining, and it's great to get all of that in one piece of music.

Phenomenal work Alimar. Some fantastic development on the various themes. Ever changing as befits the title and inspiration. Sound quality (mix and engineering) is also sparkling. Magical.

Delightful
I caught this today on SoundCloud and left some comments there too. Lots to like in this carefully crafted ride. I can see where your image of the Colorado ride would be behind the momentum of this piece. Skilled use of all of the contrasting elements at your disposal across colour, pitch and volume with lots of activity to keep interest - in fact, kind of like clinging to the raft as you play with and reintroduce themes in the swells and ebbs.

Take a bow!
Doug

A big production here, Alimar, and what a wonderful job you've done with it. The rich orchestral sounds and the changes of mood makes the piece very engaging throughout. Impressive work that I enjoyed greatly!

One suggestion
I think this mix would be better with a more full bottom end. I am using a pretty decent sound system with 4 subs and not much bass seemed to be coming through. The drums had no umph to them. The low instruments didn't seem to fill the spectrum much in the 100hz and below range. Perhaps it is meant to be that way, if you do remix it with some vavavoom, I would love to test it out. Symphony bass notes can be so powerful.

Alimar said 1421 days ago (August 5th, 2013)
The mix...
Thanks for the suggestions! Yeah, concert basses move the body and soul... Your system seems to be awesome!

The bounces are right out of the NOTION mixer (default master hall reverb, because adding effects to each track, while rendering software sounds, would really tax my system), imported into Logic, bounced again without any additional EQ or effects. I would eventually like to bounce each instrument and add EQ individually within Logic. The engine in NOTION tends to blend sounds, whereas if they were handled separately externally, they could be isolated more. As it is, no mastering has been done.

If and when I master this, I will be sure to send it along... As a higher res file, too.

Thanks again for listening and critiquing.

le fleuve de la vie
I went along for the ride and thoroughly enjoyed the ever-changing scenery and emotions, Alimar. It was a bit hairy there at 4.40 but we made it through to the calm water below the rapids only to be pummelled again several times later. Evocative and enervating. Thanks for sharing your talent with us. Kind regards, Peter.

What a treat
Oh you with all the time for these creations..... your a lucky man.

Lots of flavors and contrasts in this one, just like all the surprises down a river stream.

Initially I went with that vision you laid out, and took it with my mind as far as I could. I really enjoyed those moments of contrast from sudden action to the pauses where the water is reduced to semi-stillness, allowing one's ears to hear the small trickles dancing on nearby rocks, then all of a sudden back to a surge of action. The musical ideas seemed to just pop, not unlike the sensation of pop-rocks candy, which burst flavors in your mouth at unannounced times.
(Excuse the example. :) )

Anyhow, as I said after a while, I kind of lost the river metaphors along the way because I was more wrapped up in just the collections of sounds and contrasts of your creative work. It's almost as if the it became much bigger than the original thought. But don't get me wrong, it was worth the raft trip to get there.

I'd have to listen a few more times to really justify anymore talking, but time is always short. Glad I listened to this one and glad your music is doing so well.

Invigorating
I was expecting anything but a white-water raft excursion from the title. And given the instrumentation, flute interludes and wonderful lightness overall, I assume that is a magical river with ethereal beings and colorful reflections of light in the flying water drops.

Such a joy to listen to your compositions! Ever more inventive and full of life.

Your structure and musical ideas are getting more transparent without losing depth - I call that impressive progress. Glad you keep posting here!

Yeah, I like that!
First off, thanks for listening and commenting.

Secondly, now that you mention it, there is a magic in MY life's 'ride' these days. Being blessed with my first two grandchildren (in a span of three months) has me floating on the water drops of time.

Since your descriptive insight above, I now imagine the water suspended above the riverbed, and the craft hovering ever so magically.

Your words are always very encouraging.

What a ride
In some of your orchestral pieces I think you move a little bit too fast between various ideas or movements, but in this piece every idea gets its own time. Still, there are lots and lots going on, which only fits the title or theme of the piece. You can really feel the movement of the river through it all, the torrents and the wakes. Yeah, what a ride indeed. Since I wouldn't dare going on that raft IRL, this is the best I can get - and I'm happy I got it ;-)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

After a year of college level music theory, I finally have an idea (inkling) of motives, phrasing, etc., and especially passing tones and the various cadences. I still struggle with original melodies, and development, though.

You've done a splendid and lovely job of musical imagining here, Al.

So many wonderful turns in textures and tempos in here — all very appropriate for an imagined trip down the Colorado River.

Magnificent
I am not qualified to comment on this. All I can say is:

A real thrill ride. Breathtaking complexity. Although sometimes I felt like I was sitting in a cushy seat at the concert hall, enjoying an aural feast, at other times I could feel the sense of movement and the wind and spray of the river ride. Now, please pass me a towel would ya?

My two cents
Already there are many wonderful comments about this new music. All of them I share. What strikes me the most, however, is the clarity of your musical lines. It is very easy to distinguish their movement even though there are many things occurring simultaneously. And I am particularly impressed by the variety of performance styles that you give woodwinds and strings throughout this work. I know how difficult it is to achieve those types of effects, having had very little success myself in pulling them off. You seem to handle that aspect of orchestration with great ease, and it is such a pleasure to hear it. I think you have created a marvelous film score with this track, and using it to describe the Colorado River is just perfect. I am extremely impressed with the maturity of this score and applaud you for all that you have achieved here. Just wonderful. Such a pleasure to hear this beautiful music here.

Terrific
composition. Very "American" sounding, if I may say so. Film score for an epic Western? Rafting on the Missouri? Riverboats floating down the Mississippi? Anyway, those nine minutes flew by. Some great motifs throughout and fabulous orchestration. A quite masterly piece of work. Beautiful.

A sonic river
There's nothing shy about this lushly romantic composition. It's amazing how fast nine minutes can fly by when you are expressing big cascading, splashy ideas.

My only comment (for what it's worth) is that I think it needs a more dramatic last note than a tinkling triangle. This mighty river of sound deserves to empty into an ocean, a sea, a lake, a reservoir, a .. well, not a puddle : )
