Description
Ugghhh. Still in recovery from a major psychotic break --- ummm, my computer, not me. I'm now the proud (I think) owner of a new iMac. Haven't posted in awhile, so here we go.

This is a revamped version of an oldie. I was never happy with the production on the original, so I decided to redo and rearrange a bit. I asked Steve Allen (carbon) if he wanted to do the bass, and he graciously agreed. After Steve gave the original a listen or two, he came back with "It's too clean." So, besides clarifying and punching up the bass part, he proceeded to dirty the whole thing up a bit by adding in some guitar parts (which he accomplished using his Musicman bass with electric guitar fx in GB). When I heard his additions in the final draft, I had to admit that he was absolutely right. In my mind, putting aside any mix problems (which are strictly my fault), Steve made it sound the way it should sound, and I can't imagine asking for more than that in a collaboration. This is the first time we've worked together, and it was a real pleasure for me.

Our thanks to Steve West (tokai) for helpful comments on the mix.

Dedicated to our friend Wummimann.

Steve -------- bass, effected bass
Les ---------- guitar, programming

Yeah....the bass is heavier than normal for you. Your tracks always have plenty of bottom end. But the grit here adds great width. Great composition (as usual) delivered through an interesting and well performed arrangement. Downloaded!

yes, my head was certainly swimming after working with this!

welcome back to fray; it's good to see you up and running again. fortunately for me, i had the great pleasure of listening to your beautiful music... over and over again... just trying to keep up with your special brand of madness; hanging on for dear life.

thanks so much for allowing me to contribute to this song. after the initial heart attack from realizing what i had signed up for, i enjoyed every moment of the process. hat's off, deep bows, and all other forms of admiration and respect...

cheers,

Allow?
Sure, it's nice of you to put it like that, but I don't quite see it that way. It was obviously my privilege to get you working on this. Your contributions added all the right sauce to what was a somewhat austere production. Again, thanks for your patience with me and my hardware problems. But I am especially grateful that you took the time to actually work on the piece from the arrangement/composition side of things. The end product has benefitted much from your enthusiasm.

Hi, Len
I love that Scary Monsters description. Courtesy of Steve and his scary Musicman and a little home studio magic. I'm glad you liked the drums. I was trying to channel a Bruford who hits the crash more often. I can never really get him, but I'm sometimes happy with the outcome. And Steve don't mess around. He brought the noize.

Yes, fun with time signatures. I'm always fascinated by rhythmic patterns, and I like to play around with different meters. Sometimes the result is nice, and I like to "feel" the rhythm, when it requires effort. Other times, it's completely arbitrary, therefore an unnecessary affectation. I always run the risk of trying to be cute instead of good. Anyway, this one varies between sections of 7, 6, and 4. Thanks for noticing hahaha. Anyway, thanks for coming by and listening. We appreciate it. A new post from you one of these days?

Carbon's work here takes things in a slightly different direction. Head bangers unite! Still has the signature synths, time changes, driving and innovative beats, and hot licks - just with a new wrapper. What's not to like. Great one guys!!

You have a knack for mixing electronica with hard / progressive rock, and it works really well. I particularly appreciate your ability to throw in off the wall drum beats, like at around 1:45. Steve did a fine job at the low end for you - a really well done and listenable piece of rock art - very much enjoyed!

Les_Kloo said 1534 days ago (August 11th, 2013)
Hi, Dave
Of course it makes sense. In this case, I wasn't initially going for contrast. It just kind of worked out that way. I tend to tack bits together, then face the challenge of finding the right glue. Sometimes it works, other times ... not so much, I suppose. After Steve turned my gentle little rock number into what I consider is a sonic attack, the contrasts started to ... ummm ... contrast, it that makes sense. Anyway, we appreciate your nice comments.

It ain't Mozart...
...but I imagine he'd be ripping this stuff off if he were living today. Really imaginative use of instruments and digital sounds to create a truly electronica composition that fairly describes the "insides" of a contemporary computer/machine. There seems to be a "personality"that is very alive within the circuits you are portraying, and therein lies the overarching narrative that spins out of these combinations of electronic elements. Not exactly a peaceful number, but certainly one that puts the listener right inside of your head.
Very cool. (And, yes, the bass is quite wonderful.)

This reminds me, in a way, of a solo album by Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones called Zooma. That is some gritty bass. As it goes along it starts to have a King Crimson feel. I know I make comparisons and maybe that is not cool, but heck, I wish someone would compare my junk to King Crimson or John Paul Jones.
