Lyrics
Long Way To Go - Peter Bowen (August 2013); CAPO 3

[Cadd9] [Dmadd9/A] x2

[Cadd9] I'm gazing out across the water [Dmadd9/A] But I'm living in my head
[Cadd9] The sea and sky have merged as one
[Dmadd9/A] While I'm remembering what she said

I left her in a foreign city; In a place so far away
Why you ask? Something petty…; But I had too much pride to stay

[Am] She looked at me with her [Em] sad, brown eyes
And [F] what she said came as a sur[G]prise

Chorus
You've got a long way to [Cadd9] go; Such a long way to [Dmadd9/A] go
Let the journey help you [Cadd9] grow; And when you get there, let me [Dmadd9/A] know

So I travelled far across the ages; Taking pleasure were it came
I tasted life, tried to ring the changes; But things just felt the same

[Am] I called her once from a [Em] crowded bar
But her thoughts [F] echoed from [G] afar

You've got a long way to go, Still a long way to go
Let the journey help you grow; And when you get there, let me know

Instrumental Bridge
[Em/A] [Dmadd9/A] x 3
[C]/[F] [C]/[G]

Well it’s taken time and many a tumble; But I've finally seen the light
My yearning heart is much more humble; And it is time to put things right

I've got to [Am] seek you out a[Em]cross the sea
And [F] make you believe in [G] me

I've got a long way to go; Such a long way to go
I'm heading back to let you know; That I'm ready to let go

We've got a long way to go; Such a long way to go
But I want the world to know; It is you that I love so.

Bridge as outro, end on [C]

Single take?
Damn! Dude sell your recording gear and do everything live single take. This just about as good as it will ever get.

I still want to do a song with you. I just have been so busy. Not sure I'm in your league at all my friend. If we do collab you'll probably end up carrying me through the entire tune... LOL...

Collaboration :-)
Thanks for the very kind comments, Mark. Glad you thought this turned out OK. I do now actually have a couple of songs that we could look at to see if one of them is suitable for a collaboration. I still have to record a demo version of the second song, so when I do I will PM you and send them both across to you for a listen. No carrying required :-) It will be great. Talk soon, Peter.

Lovely guitar starts this off. Reflective lyrics and warm vocal tone. I like the lyrics - the story is engaging and the chorus is strong. The Maton sounds great. There's a David Wilcox feel to this - he's one of my favourites. This works well as a solo thing - it gives it an intimacy that suits the sentiments. Good to see that you've been using your time well! See you soon!

More CDs...
The Maton seemed to suit the picking better in this than my 000 and I tried several microphone recording techniques until I hit upon the Shure placed halfway between my mouth and the sound hole about 40 cm away blended with the pickup. I was surprised how well it worked. I did have to turn the preamp on the Presonus up to nearly full to get the volume I needed, though. I haven't come across David Wilcox before. I listened to the first couple of songs off an album called "How Did You Find Me Here" and really liked them. More CD's to get... Talk soon, Peter.

Impressive
I too think you thrive from the more live set-up and feel and don't require (or would be comfortable even with) a click, quantizing or auto-tune... a bit less background hiss would be an improvement...never-the-less, a great performence, song and capture as one would expect from you Peter.

PeterB7858 said 1560 days ago (August 14th, 2013)
Comfortable
Thanks, Alan. You are right about this song feeling more comfortable just playing "live". I did try the guitar track separately but the feeling wasn't there without the vocals driving it. The slight hiss is probably due to me having the drive the preamp pretty hard to get a decent volume level out of the SM58. It is a lot less efficient than my condensers, but it is warm and forgiving :-) I appreciate you dropping by. Regards, Peter.

To go
Sweet song.

In the beginning I thought your single take approach was costing you some accuracy in the singing department, but somewhere around the 2 minute mark you seemed to gain confidence. The singing seems stronger from that point.

Another thought re singing. Song lyrics are more formal that ordinary spoken words, and so sometimes for me it sounds like a mismatch to use overly informal speech patterns. Specifically, your second line you sing as "But I'm livin' in mah head". I think I can live with the " livin' " but I'd sung this I would have definitely been more formal on the "my".

I'd be curious to know if you've ever given any thought to this question, and if so what your feelings are.

Organic?
Thanks for the listen and thought-provoking comments, Vic. I suppose the bigger picture concept that I am grappling with, in the most part, this year at MJ is to try and write the type of song that can end up being a strong number of a comfortable repertoire that I can sing as a solo singer/guitarist sitting round a fire, or in a low key coffee house type setting. The great majority of my singing/playing is done for my own enjoyment and relaxation and there aren't any nearby backing singers, rhythm sections, horn sections, string ensembles, etc. round in general so even though Garageband and the like give you access to all those, I am more interested in exploring whether the song, and the performer, can cut it and produce a performance that people find worth a listen. Hence this type of post. I agree with you re the increase in confidence as the take progressed. What I find with a lot of songs of this type is that it will take me several months of playing the song a number of times a week until I get to feel really comfortable with it. I like singing this one and I am hopeful that the vocal and the guitar playing will become more confident and relaxed as I grow into the song. In terms of the diction and pronunciation of words, I agree with you as well. I probably do need to think a bit more about that and concentrate on that when I am in the familiarisation phase of the song. I am already singing this song slightly differently in terms of melody and phrasing than the take that was posted. Hopefully it is an iterative and organic process (are they contradictory?) as the song evolves. I appreciate your question and interest. Take care, Peter.

VicDiesel said 1550 days ago (August 24th, 2013)
organic
Y'know, I think I'm living in the singer/songwriter capitol of the world, and it's not really my thing. What I really object to is the attitude of many singer/songwriters that being honest/straight-from-the-heart makes up for simplistic chord structure, slurred lyrics, and boring melodies. Not to mention meaningful lines that entirely don't scan with the structure of the music. Call me old-fashioned but I think a song benefits from a certain amount of craft.

I don't have many singer/songwriters in my library, but I like James Taylor & Harry Chapin. Especially JT really knows his way around an acoustic guitar (you're good in that department, btw) and their lyrics are just tight: creative, not a syllable with unnatural stress, and sung spot-on.

Thanks for giving me your thoughts on the matter.

in support of the singer/songwriter
I like this song, the sound, and also, the conversation with VicD; I love the sound and the whole ambience of a voice and guitar, especially as you say in a small club or around the campfire. I recognize and really appreciate the good stuff when I hear it :)

Also, s/s means getting both composing and performing (and often recording) to gel at the same time. I would like to write like this, but it's just not what comes out when I sit at the piano or the computer.

I guess that's why I so like the music community.

Playing to the wind
Thanks for the listen, David. I appreciate your comments and support. Without MJ as an audience I would be sitting, playing to the wind (and my long suffering family and friends...). Acoustic guitar and vocal do go very well together but, as Vic rightly points out, there are degrees of wellness :-) I am glad that I am a member of the music community, as well. Take care, Peter.

Peter ... I am so not here lately as life has pulled me away in some other directions so I am sorry to be late on such a fine tune ... this breathes with the air that is created from a simple pure approach. No problems, Stan. I haven't been around much lately either. Life seems to have got a bit busier of late. I appreciate your kind words re the performance. I am already singing this song just that little bit more smoothly and with some melody improvements, so, as I discussed with Vic above, it is an organic thing. I'm guessing you find the same thing. "Just me..."
...is okay by me. Very personal rendering of these sensitive lyrics. It's a coffee shop performance for quite, thoughtful people who take the time to actually listen (and appreciate). I love the simplicity of the single guitar to fill in the harmony as needed. The song needs nothing more. Well done.
