free improvisation for piano. No cuts, no edits...just...music.

I am hoping for some feedback regarding my audio set-up: I've added a bit more reverb here than I usually try, hoping for an empty-concert-hall effect. I may, though, have simply been seduced by the reverberation, so opinions about that would certainly be welcomed. Also, is the general volume okay, or does it strike you as maybe a bit on the soft side? And if you like it just as it is, that's cool, too.

Strong rhythms in this one!
The music comes out as a dance, at least to me, it's the rhythmic nature of it and the way it slows and hesitates then races again. Very nicely played. I'll come back when I've had some sleep to assess the sound, I'm way too tired to focus that well on anything. Glad I listened to this before going to bed though, it's left me in a good mood and that's a good way to be heading for bed so thanks!

atmosphere here. The start reminded me of a more classical, detailed Michael Nyman style.

I love how it develops and becomes more and more magical as it progresses, and the ending is nicely rounded off at just the right moment.

Soundwise - it could be slightly mellower, reverb isn't too overpowering, but I'm not 100% on the setting - slightly long for a concert hall perhaps.

All in all, really nice :)

Paul, you just amaze me! Yes, it's maybe a bit on the soft side but who cares when you're listening to such awesome improv! (Still can't believe I know you!!)

Hi Paul....
This was a most enjoyable piece of music to listen to yesterday. The dynamics were very interesting and these along with the melody flowed together very well.

I listened through the piece at least six times before realising I was at work. Talk about immersive.

Take care.

You keep amazing me, even knowing your playing skills. What KC said - the music flows like a river!

Actually I like the reverb on this. As long as it doesn't muddle up the sound it's rather nice with the extra space effect.

I know I have thought on some earlier pieces from you that the volume was a bit low, but here there were no problems. On the contrary there is some very nice dynamics in it. So yeah, I like it just as it is!

Thanks again and take care,

First, what a delightful piece of music. I can picture your hands dancing across the keys as you play this. The fact that it's improvised adds to the enjoyment! Re. the sound, I downloaded the song to iTunes and checked the volume level (which I have set to automatically level out all the tracks in my library) and this one had the volume pushed up a few notches, so I guess iTunes thinks it's a bit low. Re the reverb, I like it and it does give that empty hall feel, but I think I'd like it without the reverb, too.

Thanks again for sharing your music with us, Paul.

What gets my attention is how dynamic you play.
Next is your creative playing, displayed by your excellent improvisation.
The reverb fits as it gives the concert hall feel you wished to capture.
Near perfect performance.

Beautifully played. Dynamically speaking, it starts soft, but that really gives you the room to breathe - if you bumped up the gain I think it would adversely effect the dynamics, so I say leave it where it is. As for your technic, I think the word I like here is "effortless". You make it sound easy, like you could be having a casual conversation with someone while you play - it's that good. I really enjoyed this, Paul - thanks!

The volume is fine... so is the reverb. Any louder would limit the sonic ceiling, and it might choke the resonance. Nice ending!

is the feeling I get. Not from the music but the very fact you could play this beautifully without a cut/edit or a flaw. Sigh... I couldn't put something like this together with 200 tracks in logic!

I'm guessing you hear a "flaw" or two but they are so subtle I'd never even pick them up. Your musical level is up on a peak I'll never get a chance to visit. But from my "observation" level the music sounds simply glorious.

I especially loved the beginning. Not that you are guilty of this or anything at all in this piece, but I sometimes find that people with your talent often add too much. IE they try to build but sometimes it gets to busy. This never goes that direction, however I did especially love the pure simple work at the start. It ran around with such energy but it was crystal clear and clean, each note standing on its own and without support from deeper keys and crossing melodies.

Paul you are a magician. I will sit on my observer level and listen to you create as long as you will allow me entrance to the concert. Thank you.

Reverb Seduction
I think it's very common -when trying to find a particular sound- to miss the sound you actually have. The reverb on this is not particularly heavy to my ears. Concert Hall? I don't know, but the sound is very rich and satisfying.
I'd love to be able to play like this!

The interplay of flow and dynamics is wonderful. This piece really underscores how well you play, Paul. Precise but delicate, powerful but with graceful transitions... just fabulous. I agree that the lower volume has the effect of allowing the peaks to have appropriate headroom. Reverb is fine for me, too. The notes are not tripping over themselves. Thanks, Peter.

Sounds great to me
maybe a bit soft - but I prefer that to too hot. I listen on a system that like to do some work.Definitely not too much reverb - sounds just right to me - in fact I wouldn't have given it a thought if you hadn't mentioned it. Beautiful improvisation and masterful arc to the dynamics.

gorgeous and intricate flourishes throughout this work. You obviously were in a buoyant mood while creating this masterwork. It just overflows with joy.
I'm not listening on great headphones here at work but the reverb sound fine - perhaps it is a bit on the soft side maybe a touch more bite would be worth exploring but then again when you go into overdrive at about 1:35 it just might be too much.
Don't know why but I never got notification about this. Very happy I found it.

Something this good...
..always has room to be a tad louder imho.. and a shade more reverb wouldn't hurt either. Just need to record you walking in and sitting down on the stool.. and your sorted ;)

To be able to sit down and play music with a melody that develops as you play and to be lost and at the same time directing the progress. Were you wearing wizard's robes, by any chance? I don't think I was hearing concert hall but maybe, an empty music room with one genius pianist sitting on a bench... content to play what was in his heart. Thanks.

Sorry to be late
I listened to this on the first day but was distracted and have only just got back to it.

A very fine piece of work Paul. Splendid dynamics and clarity on the recording so not too much reverb imo.

I get the image of a stream tumbling down a hillside.

Your improvs are stunning. The reverb doesn't jump out at me and I wouldn't have thought about it if you hadn't mentioned it. Your dynamics are excellent and the volume seems fine (those who would like it louder can turn it up). The tone you get from your keyboard is the best I have ever heard.

Sorry I missed this one. Brilliant as always. Such a bright piece with all sorts of rich harmonies constantly propelling the listener to new places. The use of dynamics is outstanding. I think I'll use this one in class to help teach my students about crescendos and decrescendos. Downloaded!
