Description
It's been a while.

2013 has been a doozie of a year. Bad stuff. Good stuff. And lots of it. Plus, I've been house hunting for about six months (finally found one and will move in in a month, I hope). It has not really been a very productive year music-wise and I really haven't been around here to much either. Sadly, I don't see either of those changing for a while.

Still, I've had the itch for a couple of days, but with little success at coming up with something new, I pulled out something old that I never finished. This was recorded back in 2010. I dusted it off, rekajiggered the parts and put a lead guitar on it.

I hope to get back into the swing of things musically one of these days soon. I may have an actual studio space in the new house (studio/spare bedroom, that is, but it's better than the end of the kitchen table I have now), so maybe once I'm settled in I'll be back in business.

Until then, hope you guys enjoy this one.

Promise
©2010 Joseph Gurner

You tell me you didn’t mean to break my heart again and again
You tell me you love me just to tear me down again
But I’ve grown tired of playing the games you love to play
The magic of your smile, slowly fades away

I promise I will always love you
but I know the games you play
I promise I will always need you
But I have to run away
Your love is like a poison apple
Tempting me each night and day
Every day will be our last
I promise you
I promise you again

You ply me with tender moments when you feel like killing time
You keep me in the corner until you want to play
I thought that we had something special I thought you were the one for me
But I fight off all these tears, as you turn away

I promise I will always love you
but I know the games you play
I promise I will always need you
But I have to run away
Your love is like a poison apple
Tempting me each night and day
Every day will be our last
I promise you
I promise you

Another day dawns on us
and I feel you next to me
Another moment we’re together close to ecstasy
I can’t tear myself from the gaze of your eyes
Even though I know I’ll be wrapped in your lies

I promise I will always love you
but I know the games you play
I promise I will always need you
But I have to run away
Your love is like a poison apple
Tempting me each night and day
Every day will be our last
I promise you
I promise you again

Sounds like you have been on a bit of a journey, Joseph. Glad you found some time to post. The jangly guitars and panned drums give this song a spacey, reflective, 80's pop feel, to me. The bittersweet lyrics tell an age old story and the melodic lead lines work in nicely. I enjoyed the listen. Thanks, Peter.

Well done Joe!
Loved the airy guitar work that introduces this and it's a fine song that follows, with some pungent lyrics that resonate with many of us so it's easy to identify and attach oneself with the story being told, a good catchy melody line (well sung by the way), nicely constructed and the production work and balance is very, very good. This is what I call a most solidly crafted song and track! Sounds like you and I both have had a weird kind of year (mine's just settling down!) and I wish you the best of luck in your relocation and hope that all goes smoothly for you. Thanks so much for sharing this! Michael

Yeah, what Michael said
well, except for the relocating part. I've lived here 30 years.
Good job Joe, and good luck with gettin' on.

Rekajiggered
Hope you get the studio set up soon. Your guitar sounds are really terrific, especially the lead. I always wonder who your vocals influences are. Sometimes I hear Flock of Seagulls in your singing and sometimes it's a little bit Robert Smith-ish. Works for me!

Thanks for the download

Nice post Joe
Sorry I'm late - things just seem so busy lately. This sounds to me like one of your best. Well structured, played and sung. Hope life settles down for you soon.
Cheers from Oz,

agree with one of your best. seems the break brought on some creative goodness. love the melody and the music is open and spacious. best to you with all that's going on.
and--ugh!--have fun with that moving...
sometimes kinda exciting, but still can come close to a 'hell on earth' event.

The cure for what ails you
Sounds kind of 80's, is what I'm saying. Open and spacey, with some cool lead guitar. Good luck with the move. I had to change islands four years ago and the logistics were horrendous.

Great!
Joseph, you and the rest of the pros on here still amaze me how you can make a recording that sounds better than the stuff I grew up on in the 60's. Your vocals sound especially nice here. Excellent use of sustain on the guitar solo. As Ronnie Babin would have said, "Cool beans man!"
