Description
The song
We are connected to people, ideas, events and, of course, places. My thoughts were jumping from place to place as I wrote this song, but the main places that were in my mind include:
• Coolangatta beach in southern Queensland. A beautiful beach with The Point Danger lighthouse just up the hill from the beach (although the rock pools part is probably more from southern beaches).
• The mountains could be anywhere – the Dandenongs in Victoria, The Mount Warning/Wollumbin National Park in New South Wales, Mt Tamborine in southern Queensland.
• Mt Warning as it was named by the explorer Captain James Cook, (Wollumbin to indigenous Australians) is the place where the sunlight first falls on Australia each day. The Tweed River runs through the Tweed Valley in northern New South Wales. It is rich farm land, and has extensive sugar cane plantations. A sugar mill still operates at Condong, and the smell is addictive!

My wife came from the area, so we’ve been there a bit over the years.

The photo is me with cane fields and Mt Warning in the background. My memory is that I was standing on a bridge over the Tweed River for the photo.

The music
Track1 – Maton FG100 steel strung acoustic, strummed
Track 2 – the Maton, capo on the fourth fret, fingerstyle.
Track 3 – bass
Track 4 – Vocal
Track 5 - fills on Ibanez Artist
Track 6 – synth for a couple of verses (the sound is Llaria pad in Garageband)
Track 7 - Danelectro 12 string for one verse
Track 8 – final solo on Gibson Howard Roberts

I hope you enjoy listening!

Lyrics
This is who we are
by Philip Gardner

Let us walk on the sand, feel the warmth of the morning
Climb on top of the rocks, where the sailors take warning
Put our feet in the pools and see silver fish scatter
Smell the salt in the air and know nothing else matters
Take in the day

Let us drive to the mountains, through the canopy green
Wave to farmers on tractors, and just take in the scene
From a lookout up high, gaze over the land
Enjoying a day when there’s nothing that’s planned
This is who we are

Let us stand on a bridge and look over the Tweed
Know that this moment brings its own guarantees
Gaze at Mt Warning, with its chin in the air
The cane by our side smell the sugary air
Now is forever

This is who we are
This is who we are

who we are
super build. the composition has a nice full sound. the synths add a nice dimension. i also like how the acoustics in each channel play something a little bit different. the lead guitar threads through here nicely and such a warm tone. excellent all around piece philip.

That's good, Vic. I did try this time to fill the synth out a bit and played more than my usual one finger line. I appreciate the comments on the guitars, too. Thanks for listening!

Nice mellow, south of the border, or in our case, south of the equator, vibe, Philip. Great to hear lyrical, mature songs written about Australia. The guitars are very good and the whole project hangs together very well. I'm sure Gaby will be pleased. Good one! Talk soon, Peter.

Thanks
Glad you thought it hung together. Gaby not so keen - she said "Too slow, not much of a melody". You win some, you lose some. I thought it had a gentle intensity to it, but it is dividing opinion. Another friend thought it had too much going on and would be better with just a single guitar. To each his own, I guess. See you soon!

There's no accounting for taste
among friends or family. Fortunately, there are others, like me, who think this is lovely. Warm, personal, friendly (ie: accessible), mature (ie: no screaming or other forced vocal tricks); generally just very fine listening. Thanks.

It almost has a bit of a Hawaiian feel ... love the lead noodling on the guitar panned right ... nice tone on that Howard Roberts! Lovely warm piece Philip ... lyrically strong... and a very nice portrait.

Sugary air
I have never experienced sugary air, but it's a nice lyric, both literally and figuratively. A very pleasing and gentle piece, with a sort of relaxed feel to the timings (it seems) that supports the mood. Well done, sir.

Sugary
When the mill is going, extracting sugar from the cane, there is a beautiful smell in the air. You used to be able to go through the mill and see the different stages of the sugar being processed. Anyway, thanks for the comments on the song, Les- much appreciated!

You have a Danelectro 12!
I didn't know that! I'm envious.

I like the way you've kept out of your own way with all those guitars vying for a place in the mix - classy! The pace is perfect, and lyrics, vocal and production excellent.

I can't warm to the strings though, and (of course!) would have liked to have heard a B3 instead.

Plenty of room in there for the introduction of bass and drums at the start of the second verse too. But then it wouldn't have had the lovely folky vibe anymore.

Grea post Philip!!

Danelectro
The 12 string came after I borrowed a Maton Southern Star 12 from a friend. After that, I felt I needed one. A Southern Star was well out ofd the price range, but the Danelectro was not and they do have classic sound when plugged in. Interesting comments on the arrangement. I was trying not to overdo things, although in the end may hve. B3 instead of the Llaria Pad? Probably. I use the synth because I can't play much keyboard and haven't the patience to pencil a part. Anyway, thank for all the kind comments, Neil - they make me even more determined to get to The Shed one day!

You'd be most welcome!

I became a Danelectro fan after watching Richard Thompson. Came close to buying a DE 6 string locally last year, but couldn't think of a good enough reason to buy it.

Enjoying the mix
The guitars sound great together and the combination really compliments the vocals nicely. The strings fill the empty spaces well. Very melodic which makes this shine.

Just so you know I'm not ignoring your post, I have been spectacularly unsuccessful in being able to play ( or even see an icon for playing) this piece on my iPhone and iPad. Sorry mate, but this will have to wait until I'm back from holidays. I'm sure given your other work it is brilliant, but I'd still like to hear it.

Some summer warmth from Oz
A lovely production Philip! Your vocal and guitar work is always top flight, but the tone and performance on your Gibson really shine through in this piece. The style is perfect, reflects the light and sunshine of the area, and brings us to know about your home in ways that photos could not. I knew this one would be worth the wait!!
