Stardust SRC2013

Description
Thanks to Drak for bring us back to space. This piece started with a manipulated drum track that ended up sounding to me like breathing in space. I then searched archive.org for some mission control recordings and also found a great version of Stardust featuring the vocals of Harry Cool from the Prelinger Archives.

Photo was taken at The Guggenheim Museum of the James Turrell installation in August of this year.

This never would have happened without the influence of Stanley Kubrick.

Doh!
In my search for sound I never even made the connection between the Space Race Challenge and the actual space race as depicted here with John Glenn in the Mercury program.

You do some cool work Kevin
I think you are one of those who cannot do an "ordinary" song. Way to make use of those archival resources, and for hearing breathing noises in drum sounds ;-)

The Golden Age
In general, I love the early age of space exploration, and your piece captured that beautifully. The "innocence" of mankind merging with the mind-blowing potential of space. Great mix and concept. Thanks for posting.

How this takes me back
When a blast off had more meaning, family glued to the tube to watch the launch. The space race was on. Thanks for the memories.

It was cool being a kid
back then - I watched the moon landing with my first serious girlfriend. I was 15 at the time. Hard to believe that in just another month I was at Woodstock with my brother. Busy summer.

humans in space
bringing their bravery, their swagger, and their smirky music. A nostalgic nod, rewinding my brain back to childhood memories of the visceral excitement in front of the B&W TV, watching the liftoffs in awe. Beautifully woven short story here, Kevin, but then, you're good at that :-)

space-y
to me the beginning sounds like a ship (the ocean-faring kind with straining ropes)

this also reminds me of the opening of the movie Contact - an interesting blend

thanks!

good ears
I wanted something like radio static - but not radio static - so I used the apple loop of a ship at sea and distorted and bit crushed it to change the sound - but not completely. the ship/spaceship connection was interesting to me

Clever mix
Of different - very different - sound sources! But they all make sense and make a beautiful and meaningful whole.

Thanks and take care,

Nice . . .
Seamless unfolding of the anticipation of the liftoff and suspense of early mission jitters. It dissolves into a background of eternal velvet as we are comforted by the timeless music.

Quite the ride
You have woven some cool sounds in this mix Bud over that 'breathing' track. Wow, a radio track from John Glenn too. It's curious how mission control counts 3 seconds twice. Stardust reminds me of both playing in stage band and of the game Fallout that uses music of that era. A most worthy addition to this year's space playlist. Enjoyed it!

Interesting idea
Very creative. Gosh! Those were the days eh? I used to think we'd all be travelling around in space by now. [I'm the same age as you btw] I guess space travel, for the foreseeable future, will simply be too difficult/expensive. Nice composition anyway.

Story Telling...
That's what you do so well here, Bud. You have found a little segment in the space race archives and time frame. It is so clever (and precise) the way you put all of these elements together into such a succinct package. This is very cool.
