Description
Another outing for my self-made 000 acoustic guitar.

Tuning is a semi-tone up on DADGAD, hence D#A#D#G#A#D#. In this configuration you tune 3 string up and 3 strings down a semitone from standard tuning. I think it might be better overall for the neck.

Logic Pro X.

Some squeaks and body noise, etc. again but, given my nautical theme this year, I like to think of these sounds as a parallel to the creaking/ocean-based noises of a wooden ship.

The photo is of Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse on the south-west tip of Western Australia.

See what you think.

Thanks,

Peter :-)

The Squall
You should never feel bad about squeaks and fret noises on an acoustic tune like this ... it makes it so real and pure and this is as real as you can get. Your playing and songwriting in this genre just keeps getting better and better. The end harmonic in that tuning is beautiful because of that high and low drone you get in the open tuning ... love this Peter.

Open tunings
I need to spend more time with open tunings. DADGAD is not all that difficult to improvise with. I had no idea what chords I was playing and didn't bother to work them out. It was just sounding OK so I went with it. The creaks and groans might have been coming from me... :-) Thanks, mate. Take care, Peter.

Practice vs. noodling...
I definitely am putting a bit more time and effort into practice of late, rather than just noodling around, Sam, so something must be going right. When I finally had this together the way I wanted it, I just played it every time I walked past my guitar until it came with some fluency. I appreciate your continued support. Take care, Peter.

I like that description
Creaking/ocean-based noises of a wooden ship. Just wouldn't be the same effect if those factors weren't included. Again your skill is phenomenal. The song reminds me a bit like CSN&Y Find the Cost of Freedom. Nice picture too.

Affinity
I like the comparison as well, John. The acoustic guitar should have some affinity with a wooden sailing ship and they both have their particular organic sounds. I am glad you enjoyed this. CSN(Y) did some truly great acoustic songs, didn't they. Thanks! Regards, Peter.

You make me miss the ocean so much!
Is this the same instrument you used on your last song, the home made one? I don't think I noticed as many "squeaks" in this recording so perhaps you've adapting to it a bit better Peter (I kind of like 'em nonetheless). I bought a ukulele last year and to date, all I can play is "Ain't She Sweet" and with that frustration, I am growing to understand just how DIFFICULT it is to play as beautifully as you do. This felt so good to listen to and I hope your compiling these "sea shanties" (so to speak) for a CD, because I'll be the first to buy a copy. Thanks for the great work!

Organic
I'm heading off for three days boat-based estuary fishing tomorrow, Michael, but the weather is looking pretty dodgy. I think a squall or two might be in the offing... This is the same guitar as my last recording. It is in a different tuning though and didn't record the same way, even with exactly the same setup and settings. I suppose that is one of the joys of having such an organic instrument. I am glad that you enjoy theses tunes. And, yes, I do usually put together an end-of-year CD for family and friends. It gives me a chance to re-record and remaster things, as well. Your support is much appreciated. Take care, my friend. Regards, Peter.

Take me with you...
This series is just wonderful and I am still thinking that if I were set adrift on a merchant ship with your solo guitar ballads to listen to every evening, I would be a happy man, indeed. Your playing is quite wonderful, Peter, and has such a fluid feel to it. There is a folk song quality to this piece, too, that makes it immediately accessible and so very pleasant to listen to right away. I don't understand the tuning aspects of your description above because I do not play the guitar (other than a chord or two). But I am completely impressed with the fact that you made your own instrument and that it sounds so wonderful. You are truly masterful in all aspects of this kind of music. So very much enjoyed.

Hi Peter - sorry to be so late - my life has recently gotten in the way of my MJ listening, so i'm always behind. that being said, i'm so glad to have found this. the info on the tuning is fascinating to me, and personally i love the organic feel of hearing the sounds that go with playing the instrument. your playing is just superb, delicate yet powerful, and you have the ability to make something very hard sound easy. beautiful work - thanks so much for the gift of the D/L!

squeaks and body noise OK with me
My favourite way to play guitar is an acoustic in open tuning and equally I like listening to the same. This is an excellent track - some of the rolls (pull offs and hammer ons)remind me of the late great Bert Jansch. I'll down load this one.
Cheers

Nasty weather ahead
Great song to set a salty tale to sound. As a Bluenoser I love songs of the sea. I love your tone throughout and dexterity in some of the faster figures you play. I could easily imagine Stan Rogers' voice singing in his baritone over your track, and find it an engaging listen just as a solo. Thank you for allowing downloads Peter.

How do you mic the guitar? One or two, and where do you place them w.r.t. The guitar body or neck?

I've always liked anything with at least a dropped D tuning to get the resonances really working. Your tuning is interesting too as it spares the neck some tension. I always wonder about the turnings that go mainly sharper than normal and if there is any potential damage to the guitar. I'm also very impressed that you made the guitar. Wow.

Was there anything in Logic X that was handy for mixing this track? I hear you can play with pitch a little like melodyne for example. ( not that I expect with your obvious skill you would need to fix that). I'm just curious if there is anything so great about Logic X for me to consider upgrading sooner than later.

Again, lovely piece Peter!

The Spreader :-)
Thanks, Doug. The guitar recording technique is a simple one that evolved from all my fiddling around this year. I have used it for my last couple of posts. It basically involves blending a feed from the L R Baggs Lyric mic p/u that I installed in my 000 with that from a Shure SM58 that is positioned about 20 cm away from the sound hole above about the 14 fret (and angled towards the sound hole). It is very quick and easy to set up.
I think Logic is doing a slightly crisper job of the recording process (over GB) but the only special Logic effect that I used in this piece is a modulation tool called the Spreader. I use it on both tracks (which are panned at +/-12) to create a greater sense of space around the solo instrument. Thanks for your interest and support. Take care, Peter.

No tricks, no special effects, just a warm natural tone which includes the body, finger, and fret sounds. As a boy I spent hours listening to my grandpa play a similar style. Self made guitar perhaps but you make it sing.
