Description
Another single take, solo singer/songwriter post using my self-made 000 in DADGAD tuning (up a semi-tone).

I wrote this song as a tribute to J J Cale when he died earlier in the year and was thinking that it might end up as a collaboration with Mark Holbrook (we have discussed doing one) but when I tried to get the basic tracks down in the style of “Hey Babe” off J J’s Troubadour album, I couldn’t settle into what I came up with...

Anyway, I still have my 000 in the tuning I used to post my previous finger style instrumental post and all of a sudden the words I had written months ago just seemed to align with my noodling.

The rest, as they say in the classics, is history.

Sorry, Mark... but we will do a song together soon. I guarantee it.

Same recording technique as several earlier songs this year (Shure SM58 and LR Baggs Lyric mic p/u blend, single take, no click-track or autotune).

The photo came from http://www.panoramio.com/photo/274872

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter ☺

Lyrics
The River - Peter Bowen (July 2013) (DADGAD up a semi-tone)

The river runs high and the river runs low
From my mountain home to the gulf below
I'm drawn to it, so why pretend?
There's a new dawn waiting round every bend
Gonna follow that river, my friend, to the river end

The river runs deep and the river runs wide
Some folks run to trouble trying to get to the other side
The water is cold and the current is strong
You've got to work with it, just to get along
I'll just go with the flow and keep singing my river song

And when I get down to the lowlands
When I smell that salt in the air
I'll head straight out to the islands
And live life without a care

Break

So when I get down to the lowlands
When I smell the salt in the air
I'll head straight out to the islands
And live without a care

When my river of life nears the end of the line
And I'm too old to party and no longer can drink the wine
When the ladies don't call and age I can't defy
Well mother nature's call, I won't deny
I'll follow that river, my friend, I'll tell you no lie
Gonna head back to the river and follow it right up to the sky
I'm gonna follow that river back home and lay me down to die

Oh man this is good! Great song. Love the bluesy vibe. You are a true master of the acoustic guitar. Judging by the sound you get that would include master builder and player.

Oh, yeh,
This is so nicely played. That opening guitar work is immediately engaging. You have such a clean style of playing and there is a lot of intricacy going on in your selection of just what strings and frets to pinch in each chord. This is awfully good vocally, too, for a once-at-it recording. The comfort you bring to this track easily transfers to those of us fortunate to hear you. Great, folksy post. So pleasant on the ears.

gorgeous
Really luscious song, beautiful playing and singing the blues. My only critique is that at 2:44, it sounded like a tiny bit of clipping, but other than that, flawless recording... very intimate and rich sound.

Thanks everyone!
I am up early and off fishing to an isolated river/estuary system in far eastern Victoria for 5 days this morning so I will have to comment when I get back. I appreciate all of your comments and support, as always. The river beckons... Peter.

You sure are getting a big fat tone out of that acoustic ... beautiful playing Peter ... love that tuning. I don't know if it's my phones or I'm going deaf in my right ear but it sounds panned overall to the left ... not that it really matters because the recording is sounds real good and warm. This would be a great tune for some bluesy harp ... have fun fishin'

Gorgeous guitar work. Excellent recording production values! Crystal clean. Great mix/balance between the vocals and the guitar (a common hurdle for guitarists (I know all too well!). I real classic take on a classic genre. Pure and simple.

Fabulous.
Great guitar, both the playing and the tone of the instrument. Hard to buy a guitar that sounds that good without spending a fortune so well done on making it yourself! This is also a great song, something special made from simple ingredients.

Guess I'm a sucker for fingerstyle blues ...
... and if this be so, then let me be “guilty as charged.”

Yep, you just “go with the flow and keep singin’ your river song,” and I will keep fave-ing your music.   :-D

The lyric of this piece, truly, is “positively just as good as it gets.”   You’ve taken a classic metaphor ... life equals river ... time marches on ... and blended them perfectly.   Then, set the whole thing to a terrific well-played tune.

An honest live performance feel is really present in this one. As Paul says, the intimacy of your guitar makes it a part of my ears almost. Your playing always impresses, but over and above that it is a really fine performance full stop. Thanks for the dload Peter.

blues on the river
Great picking, cool song.

For the obligatory nitpick: you can cut the intro by quite a bit. I would just pick the opening chord for a measure, two at most. A whole blues progression does not have enough information content: I get bored before you even start singing.

But the singing is good.

This has a strong pull and the playing, vocal and song composition has a true "Delta Basin" style to it that's hard to resist. Extremely fine work from all and it's nice when talents like yours and others combine so perfectly Peter...thanks!
