God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (take 5)

Description
"God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" is an English traditional carol. Like so many early Christmas songs, the carol was written as a direct reaction to the church music of the 15th century. It is referred to in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, 1843: "...at the first sound of 'God bless you, merry gentlemen! May nothing you dismay!', Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action that the singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to the fog and even more congenial frost." Raise a glass to all those singers without fear, standing in the cold, still singing!

This is not only the fifth track on the album, but the arrangement is in 5/4 time. The style is reminiscent of Dave Brubeck's recording, "Take Five" (written by Paul Desmond). I present this song as an homage to one of my most beloved piano influences and mentor. The final variation is for three hands, as I envision his ghost sitting beside me at the piano.

Please check out my Midwinter Born project page to learn more about my solo piano album and check out the Liner Notes page to learn a little about each song and track. Merry Christmas!

Thanks. When I played this for my son (28 year old), he said, "This works so well, it's amazing no one ever did it in 5/4 before! It's so natural, seems like I've heard it before." I think it's his favorite track on the album.

Yes, Christmas keeps getting better. Appreciating the days more and more ;-)

Jazzy Carol
5/4 to 3/4 - cool switch-up. Almost like variations or vignettes as we proceed through the piece. The Take 5 riff gives form and familiarity as we experience each rendition. Deftly crafted and performed sir. Merry Christmas Tobin!

Deftly crafted
Thanks, Doug. I spent about one week crafting each one of these carols. Not rushing, waiting until i was satisfied that a balance between interesting and familiar was achieved to my liking, and long enough for me to replay it enough to get down fingerings, etc. I'm glad I didn't rush anything. Less stress too. A way to celebrate Christmas year around!

Cheers!

Thanks for checking in! Yes, I am still working, although at a much slower pace and always careful of heath pressures. But not writing or arranging is too painful… Thanks for listening. And happy holidays.

What a great combo! All the things I love in one: Brubeck, 5/4, old carols, piano and The Big Guy. Kudos, Tobin!
