Description
I posted this song as a solo singer/guitarist track last year and, amongst many generous comments, I had an interesting conversation with Victor about how songs such as this evolve over time as I tweak them and get comfortable with playing them, so I thought I would post a current iteration.

The vocal and guitar are still a simultaneous, unedited “live” track effort, using my self-made 000 this time instead of the Maton, but I added some MIDI strings and French Horn to fill out the arrangement a bit.

I know I haven’t been around much since before Christmas but I was taking an MJ sabbatical and have been focusing on other things for a while.

Judy and I recently had a very enjoyable road trip round south-eastern South Australia and south-western Victoria for a couple of weeks and, hopefully, I have a few ideas in the melting pot.

Anyway, some of you might be interested in hearing how the song has evolved.

Regards,

Peter ☺

Long Way To Go
I like this, a lot. You always write well, and this is no exception. Excellent melodic, thoughtful chord choices working well with poised sincerity in the lyric; it's your formula, and it works...always does.

Nice ornamentations from
the addition of strings and other instruments , not over powering ..just enough to lift the guitar and vocal...nicely done.

Very pleasant
Such a nice song. Clear and articulate vocal that fits the song well (and I really liked the lyrics). The guitar is absolutely beautiful! Overall a grade A song that I enjoyed very much.

Seriously, you made the guitar, too? Wow and well done!

A fortunate man
Thanks for those very kind words, Adam. They are much appreciated. The guitar is made with all Australian tone woods and is pre-war Martin 000 in style. It turned out much better than I could ever have expected. I fitted it with an LR Baggs Lyric mic pickup that sounds great through my Fishman Loudbox Performer acoustic amp. I am very fortunate. Kind regards, Peter.

Welcome back!
Beautifully bright guitar and vocal at the start. The strings are nice and warm and add colour. The French horn complements the mood of the lyrics. I like the additions - David Wilcox's "Frozen in the Snow" comes to mind as I listen to this (one of my favourite tunes). Fine work, my friend!

Catch up soon
Thanks, Philip. I toned down the additions just a touch from the CD. Interesting how hindsight listening changes your perspective a bit. I am quite proud of this song and do enjoy singing it. I listened to "Frozen in the Snow". Beautiful song. It reminded me of early Don McLean in style. Catch up soon. Peter.

What I do
Thanks, Michael. Yes, I suppose I like these minimalist type arrangements so that the vocal and guitar can take centre stage. I am keen to try and write songs that can stand by themselves as a singer/songwriter vehicle since that is what I do most of the time. There is no doubt that the addition of some judicious strings, et. al. can really lift a song as well, though. I appreciate your support, as always. Take care, Peter.

Long Way To Go
Hey Peter, this is a great tune! I really like the classic arrangement. I went back to the original for another listen - the difference is quite remarkable - this version is much richer and fuller. I also noticed you changed the key. The addition of the strings and horns also give this version emotional depth. Very nice work sir - I muchly enjoyed!

subtle strings...
...really give this track a pretty accompaniment. I know that's a strange word to use, but I think it fits the gentle mood of the lyrics and your beautiful guitar work. This is a wonderful little song (my poor hearing could use the written lyrics!). I think I'd drop the flute (or whatever it is). Strings and guitar are plenty...and then maybe just an acoustic/digital bass quietly underneath. Very nice song.

The joys of MJ
Thanks, Paul. Glad you liked the sentiment and mood of the song. I posted the lyrics with the previous version but I probably should have posted them again here. I quite like how the French Horn sounds in the mix. That we all have different perspectives of what music gives us pleasure is one of the joys of MJ :-) I appreciate your support, as always.
