SEMI-LIVE from Alphonse's Knuckle Room II

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is another almost live performance captured on tape that was thought to be lost, then found, lost again a few days later, then suddenly resurfaced several months ago, when the reel was found, miraculously intact, in a White Owl Cigar box with a rubber band around it in the room where they keep old Bert Kaempfert LPs at AM radio station, WFNA out of Lower Squankum, New Jersey.

My warm-up act at the time this was recorded (1963) was the team of Allen and Rossi and fortunately, a small portion of their famous routine was captured on tape as well.

Thanks again!

Michael

Thanks for tuning in Kenta!
Incidentally, the clip of Mary Allen and Steve Rossi is sort of historically important: what you heard here was their final joke just before Ed Sullivan introduced The Beatles for the first time on American television. Imagine having to go on before them! Aiiieeeee! Great hearing from you--take good care now Michael

Thanks so much Cees!
Well, "Mairzy Doats" is a tune my mother taught me when I was around 9. I remember singing it to my schoolmates, who probably couldn't understand a word of it, although my teacher, Mrs. Dillon--well, I could see I made her day singing some old tune she remembered from when she was a bit younger herself! Take care now, Michael

Live from Alphonse's Knuckleroom II
Michael, your appeal is so universal I thought I detected an alien laughing at the patter in the intro? :-) Great fun. Just pure entertainment and god (or allah, or ganesh or - insert deity of choice here- ) knows we need more of that. Thanks, Peter.

Treasure Trove
You keep dredging up all these old bits and wonderful songs from "the Golden Age." Always a wonderful experience to hear your rendition of the music, and your clever intro with the comedy routine gives this track the feeling of being a live performance in some smoke-filled restaurant/dining room with classy folks sipping funny little drinks and probably smoking strange concoctions, too. Birmingham seems to be agreeing with you!

Thanks so much Paul!
"Mairzy Doats" is a diddy that showed up in all Laurel & Hardy fans consider the boys' (ever notice comedy teams well past middle age are still referred to as "the boys"?) worst movie of all time, "The Big Noise" (1940), which didn't make much noise at the box office, either. But this song caught on and was one of the big novelty tunes of the day. You're so very kind--thanks again and you take care now, Michael

Very entertaining
Enjoyed ! So important to keep historical music up into the ears of all musicians. If we loose the sense of the past in music, then all is lost in music because it all goes away. And it is great you grabbed special music from the past and gave it breath and esteem. Like the added comedy and dialog. Way to Go ! Always something special when Michael has a new one!

I'm here all week, try the steak and don't forget to tip your waiters - or else
Your sense of comedy is so close to mine that it's … well, genius. :) The gags, the atmosphere, and of course "Lamzeedotes" is so authentically performed I regressed half a century or more (if that's possible).

Backing track is excellent BTW. Sounds better than your normal source of orchestral material.

You're in top form Michael. Much enjoyed!!!

That's
..entertainment!!! Really cool rendition Michael: "Cowzy tweet and sowzy tweet and liddle sharksy doisters." :) .. loved your big band sound as always and your vocals are just perfect for this style of music. To me your comic intro reminded me a little bit of Tom Lehrer but less droll - partly the accent. I got a sense of a mafia run "speak-easy" during prohibition too.. though the music might have been too modern for that era.. I have never heard any version I recall of "Mairzy Doats" before this- I wonder if it was it The Pied Pipers or Merry Macs that made this popular in 1944 [before Stan Laurel's rendition in "The Big Noise" later the same year]?

I'd go to the Knuckle Room..
Until moments ago I thought my mom used to sing "Little lambs-z-divey;" and though it made no sense to me, I went with it. The gentleman pictured is getting with "Little Lambs Eat Ivy... I can just tell.
Another enjoyed production! Ending has me asking myself: was that Larry, or Shemp? And: should I see the not too long ago released movie?
Thought-provoking work!!
