Description
Kevin sez: Surgery to repair a fractured shoulder put guitar playing on hold indefinitely. With a gig on the books with a new four piece for April 13th I decided to figure out how to transfer my guitar parts to analog synth - so I bought the Arturia MicroBrute. This also guaranteed hours of distraction overcoming the learning curve of this small and powerful instrument. I posted my first attempt at recording it recently - and Andy was kind enough to ask for something to work with. He really stretched me in the past and some of my proudest work has been the result of our collaborations. This is a lot less elaborate than some of those explorations. I used only the synth to create all of my parts including the white noise steam release sounding rhythm track. No midi was used. I started with the sequencer clock at a speed that felt good and left it there. Everything is analog so all choices are made up front - and the synth has absolutely no presets. I run it through my guitar pedal board to add dimension and color - since I am preparing to perform live on this thing. I am still very far from feeling comfortable about the show but I have some time to cram. Thanks to Andy for taking an interest in my little project and bringing his formidable talents to bear on it. Cheers - Bud.

Andy sez: I've always gained a great deal of satisfaction collaborating with Bud. On more than one occasion we have talked about the spiritual side of this. Every once in a while something about his work strikes something in my sensibilities.
additions, voice, hoop drum, sax with wah wah. I've always dug wah on sax. I try not to overuse it. And so it goes.

Andy - you are an incredibly talented and versatile musician and explorer. thanks for taking on this little piece and turning it into a rich journey - as always. I love the atmospheric sensitivity of everything you've done here - from the structure, to the perfect delay on the sax, and those inspired vocal effects. Thanks Brother.

i have to
agree with bud about you being one of the most exploratory people here. i've heard you play in all sorts of styles--even one of mine--and sound perfectly natural in all of them.
this was like a teaser, it says 4 mins, but it seemed like 2. i could have heard a lot longer.

Film score...
Don't know what kind of film, but this has all the makings of laying down a powerful scene where final action and decision is imminent. I really like the wash of sound layering as the piece develops, and that sax solo is quite nice as it pierces through the heartbeat. The bent strings a round 3:00 are a nice touch, too. I could have stood another 30 secs. or so more of that particular sound before diving back into the powerful backing track. Very imaginative from the beginning pulse to the last in that magnificent fade out. Cool.

Atmospheric
Kind of like a track that goes with an evening rain-soaked urban landscape some time in the future. It's very cool to hear how much can be done with analog synths (we're all so spoiled now with samples and complex forms of digital synthesis and manipulation). This has a deep grounded essence to the sound and that reverbed sax it perfect with the rest of the sonic landscape.

Excellent track guys, and thanks for making it dloadable.
