Desert of Man

Description
most of the time when i sit down in the evening and play guitar songs just tend to form out of nowhere. several weeks ago i was playing around with a drop tuning and this came about. it does have a sort of N.W. grunge rock sound in a way.

i don't remember how the title of the song came about, but i just went with it

Lyrics
Desert of Man

stones in the sand
nothing at hand
are you there desert of man
can you see, can you hear, can you speak
what did you dream
desert of man

desert of man
isolated you stand
desert of man
buried in the sand
did you dream, did you wish, did you pray
desert of man
sinking in the sand

challenged again
bridges you mend
break your back
and break your mind
heat waves rise, shield your eyes, forever you try
desert of man
rides a mirage of time

desert of man
isolated you stand
desert of man
buried in the sand
did you dream, did you wish, did you pray
desert of man
sinking in the sand

desert of man
transmission ends
desert of man
static once again
the oasis waits, behind burned eyes, under the sand

desert of man
isolated you stand
desert of man
buried in the sand
did you dream, did you wish, did you pray
desert of man
sinking in the sand

desert of man fades away
desert of man fades away

Just Desserts
We reap what we sow, eh?

Cool tune, Vic. There's an amalgam of musical influences in here, but I hear a bit of the early Neil Young & Crazy Horse vibe in here, but laced with lots of other interesting stuff. I love your guitar tones in this song, as well as your others. Nicely done. ;)

Vic, there's something about your chosen method of recording/production that really stamps VIC on it. Love the dropped tuning, heavy riffing and big drums. The lead was excellent and your vocals have a Morrison quality to them, which makes this stand out. You're getting better and better, Vic. Dig it!

while doing the final mix i, as well, i was thinking that the vocal was sounding close to morrison. so it's good to know it wasn't just me thinking that

the doubled lead. it started as a lark. i played the second part down a 5th. i guess it was a good thing that i actually recorded it just to see how it would turn out

I'm suddenly struck
by how much this sounds like the Doors. You must be channeling Jim Morrison....

Nice work Vic.

Lots going on and exemplary production as always.

I really had to keep switching the logic amps quite a bit for the heavier rhythm guitars. for the leads i dug out my old digitech gnx2 multi effect pedal board to get what i was needing. i think logic needs to add a 2nd room mic. for the logic amps

Dynamics
Isn't it awesome how alt tunings can make a song jump out at you? I like the concept, the execution, and particularly the lyric. I'd love to hear the sections attain a more distinct dynamic - ala Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana - maybe by double tracking and panning the distorted guitars in the loud sections and pulling back the volume and adding reverb to the clean sections, giving the loud parts more punch. Cool concept!

thanks karmic
originally i had heavy distortion in the chorus. problem was to much mud and less definition. so i was actually going the soundgarden tone, less distortion but still punchy. Although I'm still working on getting a super distortion sound that can work without the extra noise. thanks for the great ideas.

Bit late, Vic. Been travelling and now playing catch up. Really liked the opening and it just got better as the song developed. This really is one of your best, most fully realised songs, in my opinion. It has an epic feel that is flavoured by some fantastic guitar work and grounded by the heavy bass and drums. You really should be famous, playing in a loin cloth somewhere :-) Thanks, Peter.

Crystalline
Love your crystalline guitars, like glass-from-sand, switching to distortion guitar as you get further into the desert. Very cool song art, as well. Great conceptual integration. You are such a prolific artist. Love it.
