Description
I recently returned from travelling for a couple of weeks in Tasmania with my partner, Judy, and some long time friends. Great place. Wonderful National Parks. Quality food and wine. Not too crowded. Shortish travel distances (for Australia).

Anyway, we spent a few days on Bruny Island (south of Hobart) and rented a quaint beach shack right on the water’s edge. This song had its roots there (figuratively speaking...☺).

The French influence comes from the early (white) history of the island. That font of all knowledge, Wikipedia, says, “Bruny Island is an island off the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, from which it is separated by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Storm Bay is located to the island's northeast. Both the island and the channel are named after French explorer Bruni d'Entrecasteaux. Its traditional Aboriginal name was Alonnah Lunawanna, which survives as the name of two island settlements, Alonnah and Lunawanna.”

Just me and my self-made 000 - unplugged and unedited. Bit of EQ’ing and ‘verb.

The photo was taken from the National Park at the south of the island looking back towards the mainland. The birds are New Holland Honeyeaters.

Definitely worth a visit if you ever get down that way.

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter.

Lyrics
The Island – Peter Bowen (April 2014) CAPO III

[Amaj7] [Cadd9] x 4

[Amaj7] There's magic in the [Cadd9] air
[Amaj7] A sense of place so [Cadd9] rare
[Amaj7] An easy love [Cadd9] affair
[Amaj7] Entourė par la [Cadd9] mer

[Bm7] Out on the [E7] island
[Amaj7] Your worries are [Dmaj7] passė
[Bm7] The pressures of the [E7] mainland
Fade [Amaj7] away [Amaj7]

[Amaj7] Barefoot in the [Cadd9] sand
[Amaj7] Out there on the [Cadd9] strand
[Amaj7] You linger hand-in-[Cadd9] hand
[Amaj7] Her smile lights up the [Cadd9] land

[Bm7] Out on the [E7] island
[Amaj7] Your worries are [Dmaj7] passė
[Bm7] The pressures of the [E7] mainland
Just fade [Amaj7] away [Amaj7]
[Bm7] It's such a fine [E7] illusion
[C#m7] To feel you're out of [F#m] reach
[Bm7] Just walking with your [E7] lover
On the [Amaj7] beach [Amaj7]

[C/Cmaj7] City living can get you [Amaj7] down
[C/Cmaj7] Time to break free of the [D] town [E7]
[F#m] Grab some tickets for the [E7] island
[Amaj7] Catch the ferry by the [Dmaj7] bay
[Bm7] Soon all your [E7] troubles will
Fade [Amaj7] away [Amaj7]

[Amaj7] Some finger-style [Cadd9] guitar
[Amaj7] A glass of Pinot [Cadd9] Noir
[Amaj7] Candlelight and [Cadd9] caviar
[Amaj7] Soon you’ll be wishing on a [Cadd9] star

Well [Bm7] Out on the [E7] island
[Amaj7] Your worries are [Dmaj7] passė
[Bm7] The pressures of the [E7] mainland
Just fade [Amaj7] away [Amaj7]
[Bm7] It's such a fine [E7] illusion
[C#m7] To feel you're out of [F#m] reach
[Bm7] Just walking with your [E7] lover
Down on the [Amaj7] beach
On the [Amaj7] beach
You’re out of [Amaj7] reach
Down on the [Amaj7] beach
[Amaj7]

Ahhh... Very relaxing. Engaging reflections. Sort of James Taylor meets Michael Franks - very entertaining. Just vocal and guitar suits the theme of the song. Sounding good, my friend!

First of all
I'm a big fan of your guitar playing and vocals too. The phrasing reminds me a little like James Taylor which is tops in my book. Writing about staying on an island, leaving the city, hits close to home and is one thing my family plans every summer. Thanks for sharing.

The "ideal" island
Thanks, John. Heading off to an island to get away from it all is as romantic as it comes. Just as long as you can get back occasionally... :-) I appreciate your kind words. Take care, Peter.

The Island...
Peaceful contentment, completely 'happy in your own skin' feel to this. Completely original, getting a slight James Taylor or Seals/Crofts feel. Those nagging reminders. :) Tranquil, calming and soothing to the mind. It's a beaut. Thanks for sharing with us.

a very
strong melody in this one, i feel. makes the song carry itself with no need for anything else. i think if you did this live, the crowd would listen in silence and just let the guitar and voice take over for a few minutes.

loads of movement which compliments rather than distracts from the vocal.

A fine piece of writing, singing and playing.

Progression first
Thanks, Dick. As is often the case. I came up with basic chord progression first and then adapted the fills to suit when I had the melody and lyrics. Glad you thought it turned out okay. Kind regards, Peter.

I like the idea of a place on a little island somewhere where the pressures of the mainland just fade away . . . just walking with your lover down on the beach. Nicely crafted song. I like your vocals and your guitar playing style.

Great memories
Thanks, Franc. Tassie is quite a place. The song is "idealised" to a degree but my guess is that many Hobart couples/families have great memories of their beach shacks on Bruny Island. Luckily, the island still seems to have been able to retain its low-key look and feel. I appreciate your kind words, as always. Regards, Peter.

Hey Peter, this is real nice. Something about major 7th chords ... it's like I'm sitting in a room listening to a private concert. The natural sounding tone of the guitar shines here ... the words and vocal arrangement pull you in to the song. Well done Peter!

Thanks, Chris. If I have succeeded in painting a visual picture then things can't be too bad. The chord combination was quite interesting, so much so that I posted a forum question, "Theory Question", asking if anyone knew what I have actually put together, theory wise. I just play what sounds good to me... :-) Take care, Peter.

Control...
...in the simplicity of the tune,
...in the gentle, comfortable vocal performance,
...in the excellent, tasteful guitar playing
...in the narrative of your impressions
...in the restraint shown in every element of the production. Just such an enjoyable listen...to hear music composed with skill and delicate attention to every detail is a real treat.
