Description
This is a song I started writing back when Nixon was in the White House. Actually, the chorus line “Politicians say….” Was penned by my Army buddy, Harvey Goldstein, while we were stationed in Germany. Some of the first verse might be his also. (I’ve been sitting on it for so long, my memory is put to the test.) It was one of my early protest songs, and I was able to muster up some of that rebellious nature these last few years to finally complete it.
I was playing around with my Pandora’s Box effects, and stumbled across a sound that I thought was “groovy” so I laid the foundation with that. I sent it to Fred E. Jam (Loob) and he adjusted the timing and applied a good strong beat. I could hear an underlying bass melody going on and asked Chris Flynn (Rok41) if he could provide something here. He sent me a great track that meandered melodiously throughout, and had touches of what he described as a “Hollies” feel, and I tried to highlight certain parts of it for that effect.
From the start I knew that horns would sound good in this, and thought of Damiengh’s track in “Abby’s Gotta Dance.” He sent me a very cool sax track that included a solo, and lots of color for our musical canvas.
In the past, I would send a skeletal mix (voice and guitar) to all the artists at the same time, but on this one I thought I’d see how it would work by adding them one by one, gradually morphing the song into it’s natural outcome. I was afraid this might have put the squeeze on Sigmund, who I contacted last, and was contemplating ways to create more space for him. But then he sent a fabulous track and had very skillfully worked himself in without “stepping on anyone’s toes.” The solo spot was shared with Damiengh, and the guitar and sax sounded great together.
The harmonies were a struggle, but Freddy hooked me up with Wendy Stephany who added a very nice texture. I was hearing just too much Terry, and the addition of a female voice gave us just what we needed. She did a great job!
I really didn’t mean to single out Nixon in this song. He’s just the perfect representative since he got caught red-handed. I chose that photo to illustrate that we’ve got lots of Tricky Dicks in politics, always have and always will. That’s life, (and more song material.)
Hope everyone enjoys our song here. This band was amazing to work with. Peace to all. Terry

The MJ band is:

Terry Pearson (davisamerica2) Lead and harmony vocals, rhythm guitar, organ
Chris Flynn (Rok41) Bass guitar
Fred E. Jam (Loob) Drums
Damiengh (Damiengh) Saxophone
Sigmund , the all knowing (Sigmund) Lead guitar
Wendy Stephany (Wendy) Harmony vocals

Mixed by Davisamerica2 with help from the band. Thanks, guys.

Lyrics
Politicians Say

There’s a man in the White House
Watching his administration
There’s a crowd on the outside
Watching his degeneration
With his hands tied behind him
And they broke down his resistance
And he wants to run again someday, you know
But, I don’t really think he will

Politicians say they know the way
But they’ve all been bought and paid
Who listens to yesterday?

Well, his mother raised a good boy
Now he’s the king of the mountain
With all the pushin’ and a pullin’
It’s a tricky occupation
But, he tried the straight and narrow
And he tried to be that good boy
And transparency’s a good thing, he knows
But you must look the other way

Politicians say they know the way
But they’ve all been bought and paid
Who listens to yesterday?

Flip, flop, go, stop; it doesn’t matter what they say
Two step, back step, side step the night away
There’s gold in the hills, and a new horizon everyday
Blah blah la dee dah, that’s what politicians say

Great lyrics, Terry, and a fantastic groove to the song. A who's who of MJ royalty are along for the ride as well, and doesn't it show. In Australia, broken election commitments are expediently categorised as "non core" promises once in government. Good title for a song... Congratulations to all. Regards, Peter.

It's a universal pain.
As I've said before, politics is either the oldest profession, or second to the oldest, and possibly both. Thanks for the kind words from all of us.

I tried to slip myself into the spotlight here and there, but my guitar was no match for these other instruments, and yeah, Damiengh's sax just soared in this. I knew this was a song for him. Thanks for the comments.

Great Job Terry! Love this in so many ways! BUT....I didn't think you were *that old* to know when Nixon was in the White House! Ha ha ha!! Glad you are reviving some older tunes as well as new ones. Luv it!

Hi Terry.....
Great vibe, topical to boot.

Barry Sotero runs rings around what Nixon did. Rotten to the core.

Everyone who took part in this did a great job. It fits together (and works) so well.

Take care.

Maybe the answer to term limitation is rotation. We can swap politicians now and then. Kind of like student exchange. See what country they can help the most, or do the most damage to. Just a thought. Glad you liked it Paul.

The more individual talent you have in a song, the better. Even after I've worked all the tracks in and listened and mixed over and over, I discover new things in what these guys have sent me. Collabs are so cool! Glad you liked the vocals. I just felt I had to get a little weird on this one. Thanks from "up over."

Hi, Pat
It's a shame we don't have Nixon to "kick around anymore," but Washington is filled with imitators. If we get bored, it's our own fault. Hold onto that story. I plan on making that MacJams get together coming up soon. Thanks for the comments and peace. T
