Lyrics
New Day
by Philip Gardner*

1.
An old man was sitting, his head in his hands
Thinking of yesterday’s friends
And all of the joy he had felt in his life
Was seeping away at its end

What can you do when your day isn’t real
And it’s harder and harder to care
You look at the future that’s coming your way
And your soul sinks you deep in despair

2.
I don’t have the answers I don’t have the cure
I can’t know the things that you see
Do you still hear the music, still hear the songs?
Does your mind still believe that you’re free?

Ahead is the land of lost content
Can you still see it shining plain?
Those happy highways where you went
And cannot come again.

3.
If I am tempted to live in the past
When all of the world made more sense
I hope I can see down the road still ahead
And all that a new day presents

When the sun’s on my back and the wind’s in my hair
I will rage ’gainst the dying of light
It seems at the end that you’re serving no-one
When you only stand and wait

___________________________
Notes:

Into my hear an air that kills
through yon far country blows
what are those blue remembered hills
what spires, what farms are those?
that is the land of lost content
I can see it shining plain
the happy highways where I went
and cannot come again.”
― A.E. Housman (1859-1936)

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
― Dylan Thomas (1914-1953)

"God doth not need
Either man's work or his own gifts: who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state
Is kingly; thousands at his bidding speed
And post o'er land and ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait."
― John Milton (1608-1674)

New Day
Now that the Australian Government want us to work until we are 70, there will be no standing and waiting here thanks. :-) The gentle melody and arrangement counterpoints the increasing demanding social policy issues that an ageing population throw up , Philip. Quality lyrics and an engaging performance. We will just have to make the best of things in the time we have left - a new guitar perhaps? :-) Talk soon, Peter,

A new guitar?
That certainly can brighten a day! Thanks for the comments on the song -after the first verse, I struggled a bit with it and tried all sorts of permutations, so I'm pleased it came together finally. See you soon.

Maybe your best lyrics to date! I loved how you wove in some optimism

"I hope I can see down the road still ahead and all that a new day presents."

Great poetry set to a sweet melody and solid arrangement. Quality mix!

What you do best
I think I agree with you, Stan - although this one was a bit of a struggle to get done! The harmonica I thought added some soulfulness to the mix and I was pleased with the way it fitted. Thanks, as ever, for your support!

Emotionally touching
Thanks for that, Ricky. The lyrics started with an observation of an old friend who is becoming very insular in his thinking, so I guess there's a reality here that reflects the way I see things. Thanks for stopping by!

Quality all around:
...lyrics, vocal, guitar work. Very pleasant folk-style song that tells a poignant story with simplicity and honesty. Nice. I did find the bass to be a little heavy and, so, it was a bit muddy to my ears in the mix, dominating way too much. Something to think about maybe. ... I enjoyed the number very much...seemed to be a fairly abrupt ending. Perhaps a fade of the instrumental line would give a little gentler conclusion...rather than the cut-off here. Nice track in so many ways.

for some reason...
your song won't play on my iPad. I get a message "Cannot play audio file." This has happened on some of my tunes also. I've asked that it be addressed, alas... Another glitch that goes unattended.

iPads
I wish I knew what the problem was. It seems that iPads either play the songs twice, or not at all. I have wondered whether it's to do with the sample rate of the song, but haven't uploaded different versions to check that. Add it to the list of things that need fixing...

Raging against the dying light
Nice literary effort. I missed the Housman, but caught the Thomas and Milton references. Hey, two out of three ain't bad : )

So .. freedom is just a state of mind? Why not! Actually, the way that you express it here, i.e., "Does your mind still believe ..." suggests that the person has been fooling themselves all along. That's a nice twist of logic - good writing.

Rock has always been about rebellion. This song stays true to those roots by raging against the vicissitudes of aging. Rock on!

Thoughtful comments, Warren. It does seem to me that some people keep open minds in their old age, and others don't. Why? Anyway, thanks for stopping by - much appreciated!
