The lyrics were inspired by watching a plastic grocery bag floating above the street where I live.

SUBSUMED
[BUCKLEY SMITH] 2014

A plastic bag floats like a Japanese kite
A thought takes wing just out of reach
A blind eye sees with inner light
A riptide lurks just off the beach

I can feel you drifting away from me
No cat keeps a sparrow for a pet
No seer survives a lack of vision
No sea of love subsumes an ocean of regret

Slice of life...
...What a pleasant little snippet of life that moves into a commentary with some significant import. The music has a Beatles-esque quality to it—very authentic acoustical sound that is fairly dry, but effective. I thought this was a cool song that hides a message while revealing it (does that make any sense at all?) and this is unaffectedly produced. Much enjoyed.

Process
Thanks for listening and commenting, Paul. You always listen closely.

Once the image of a Japanese kite entered the vocabulary the writing took on a haiku-like expression. Something might be hiding in there in plain sight.

However, there is nothing acoustical about the process. That is, everything recorded is either electric or digital. I just keep playing around with the sounds until it seems like they are working effectively together. For a while I kept building up the ending with more instruments; then I took them all away and went back to the same combos that were the mainstay of the song.

Ah...another convert!
"Less is more..." Going back to original ideas was a good choice. Too often we get seduced by over orchestration. THIS track is very clean.

Your arrangements and vocal treatments are absolutely unique, Warren. And MJ is a better place because of it. Just a delightful, tangential two minutes of your musical musings. In awe at your creativity. Thanks, Peter,

A wonderful thing
Ha-ha-hah .. and I thought Macjams was a better place because of all the witty and insightful comments I leave on other people's posts : )

Thanks for the positive feedback. When you experiment like this you really never know what kind of response might be provoked. So hearing that someone has found something to like in it is a pretty wonderful thing.

What a cool concept ... I really like the lyrics ... and they fit well with your quirky music ( and I mean that in a good way) Those piano runs put a smile on my face.
Cheers

Normal quirkiness
Of course one person's quirky is another person's normal. Or so I like to think.

The piano just kind of ran away on its own.

I need .....
..... to learn to be more observant of stuff around me! You've done well with this Warren - the words are especially cool.

Pics
Right, Neil, like you aren't observant on all of those bushwalking pics you post elsewhere. Sometimes a song is just a snapshot. Thanks for taking a break from the shed and dropping by.

Delightfully bonkers
Playful music - serious lyrics. Yup - you're nuts. In a good way, like The Residents.

Missed target
I must be bonkers because I was shooting for serious music with playful lyrics : )

plastic bags
they can sure dance in the air.
great playful composition, musically it gives the feel of the bag drifting up and down with the currents. nice!

Drifting
That's an astute observation. I love it when the music underscores the lyrical theme. Wait .. or is it the other way around?

Running
Hmmm .. all the references to the "runs" has got me thinking maybe I have a diarrheic style of piano playing .. but I'm sure that's not what you meant : )

whether walking...
along a street or on a beach, you take the every day things and bring them to song. Love your vocal harmonies.

Warren Smith said 1190 days ago (May 17th, 2014)
Harmony
Well, Jack, I wish it was me harmonizing on the vocals, but I never seem to be able to pull that off. What I am really doing is trying to deliver alternative emphases .. which sometimes ends up harmonizing. Better harmony remains one of my unfinished goasl in music-making.

Speaking of harmony .. I was listening to a release of alternative takes of early Everly Brothers songs and it was surprisingly discombobulating to hear these efforts where they were working out the harmonies because these classic songs are so embedded in my mind it's almost impossible to conceive of them differently.

Digging the instrumentation through out
Has that Beatle-ish circa Yellow Submarine/Magical Mystery Tour vibe. Lyrics are strategically written. Thanks for sharing.

In the town where I was born ...
Ha-ha .. well, I "came of age" with the Beatles .. so I suppose there's no getting away from their influence .. even if it's working unconsciously. Thanks for the visit.
