Shifting Sands

Description
This is the first song I have recorded with my latest acquisition - a Maryland-made 2010 Paul Read Smith Angelus Standard acoustic guitar. It is a VERY nice guitar that I am just settling into. Pictures and specs of the 2014 version of the guitar (almost identical) are available here.

Anyway, I was fiddling with a descending progression and this song eventuated.

There is more than a grain of truth (sic) in the lyrics,

Live and unedited, as is my want. Shure Beta58a and the proprietary PRS pickup.

All comments and feedback welcome.

Thanks,

Peter :-)

Lyrics
Shifting Sands - Peter Bowen (June 2014) CAPO IV

Single verse intro

[Em] Things have [Em7M/B] eventuated in [Em7] my [A7] life
That [C] hindsight would have me take [B7add11] back
But it's [Em] no use [Em7M/B] crying over [Em7] kicking the [A7] cat
[C] This far [B7add11] down the [Em] track

The road I've travelled has led me far
I've seen a bit of life
Now I'm here sitting in my easy chair
Far from the trouble and strife

The [Am] shifting sands of [B7add11] time are smothering [Em] me
I'm [Am] watching the world go [C] by rooted under this [B7add11] tree

I stay up late and cogitate
'Bout humanity and such
But when push comes to shove, I'm a touch short of love
And I don't get to doing too much

The shifting sands of time are smothering me
I'm watching the world go by rooted under this tree

Two verse acoustic break

The shifting sands of time are smothering me
I'm just watching the world go by rooted under this tree

The [Em] hour [Em7M/B] glass is [Em7] moving too [A7] fast
My [C] race is almost [B7add11] run
So I'm [Em] disin[Em7M/B]clined to go [Em7] pushing the [A7] line
Just [C] lay me [B7add11] down when I'm [Em] done
Just [C] lay me [B7add11] down when I'm [Em] done
Just [C] lay me..... [B7add11] down.... (with my guitar)
When I'm [Em] done

Solo - you can't hear me...
Thanks, Franc. Grumpy olds is right! I agree that this could be arranged up. Just looking in the first instance to see if the song stands by itself in a solo environment, which is how I will play it most of the time... Take care, Peter.

Shifting Sands
I like song - engaging lyrics, warm vocal and that the jazzy chord sequence is very cool. Good rich tone to the PRS but still clean. Has that “live” feel that you're looking for. A winner!

Pick-me-up
Thanks, Philip. Yes, the tone from the PRS throughout the p/u is pretty good, really. A bit of EQing to tame a band round 200 Hz and I rolled off the bass, but mostly, as is. Glad you thought the song came across OK. Talk soon, Peter.

Movement
Thanks, KC. Descending chord progressions just have that inherent movement that seems to be going somewhere, don't they. I'm glad you liked what I came up with. Take care, Peter.

The PRS sounds great
Especially when it's used by someone who knows how to fiddle. Love the tune, guitar vocal accompany is spot on. Big fan here.

Seriously nice!
Thanks, John. The PRS is a seriously nice acoustic guitar. I played a heap of higher end Martins and Taylors and this guitar spoke to me more than the rest (by a fair way). "Big fan" is a great compliment. Take care, Peter.

Shifting Sands
You must be getting quite the collection of guitars. What an nice tone this instrument has and it is going through a pickup which sounds real good ... not brittle .... beautiful picking and melody ,,, like that chord progression in the verse especially the start from the Em picking down to A7. And that little break at around 2:00 ...Love it Peter!
Cheers

Not a lot of room in the coffin...
Thanks, Stan. I now have three acoustics that cover the spectrum. The self-made 000, the PRS (a Grand Auditorium style cutaway), and my trusty '82 Maton dreadnaught. I am thinking these will keep me happy till they "lay me down". The PRS is just a wonderful guitar (see FEEL above). Glad you liked its first outing from me (though Philip gave it its MJ debut a song or so ago). Take care, Peter.

Thanks, too, Greg. Yes, the new guitar has its own personality. It demands attention to detail and will make me a better player, I am sure. Glad you liked its first outing. "Seasoned", I am :-) Kind regards, Peter.

good progression
a well crafted song that works great as a solo piece, and I think it would work just as great with a band. Good lyrics. I agree with the notion of guitars choosing us. Like a puppy, they sit in our laps and say take me home! lol

nice
really like the elegant, swaying guitar work, and your voice has that classic brit-folk flavor (i'm thinking richard thompson or ian anderson). also, i love the line 'i stay up late and cogitate about humanity and such.'

Subjective creatures
Thanks, Vic. Yes, it was the rich, warm tone that drew me to the instrument. Quite a few of the higher end Martins and Taylors that I played seemed more geared towards how they sounded through a pickup, at the expense (to my ears) of a rich, balanced unamplified acoustic sound. The PRS seemed to have the best of both worlds to me. But guitars are subjective creatures. If anyone wants to give me a D28 Marquis or a 914CE I will try to like them, too :-) Take care, Peter.

Worthwhile...
Thanks, Tim. Glad you liked the song. The new guitar is a real beauty. I tend to try and publish the chords for all my songs. The thought (hope) that someone, somewhere in the world is singing a song I have written makes it all worthwhile. Take care, Peter.

I'm liking the sound you are getting from your new purchase. You play it very well. I like the line "I stay up late and I cogitate." You don't see the word cogitate in many songs. And that is a shame. But seriously, another fine piece. I enjoyed it a lot.
