Sweet Agony / with Awigze & Scofugate

Description
I wrote this song back in the 70’s. It’s been so long, I’m not sure if it was from a personal experience, or if I was just creating another character. Whatever the case, it’s about forbidden fruit, unrequited love, taboo yearnings that should not be pursued. It’s a shame, but shame on you if you try.

I had this bouncy little piano part that was always fun to play, so I built around that. There was some idle space in between the verses and I thought Awigze (Andy Wigzell) could fill them, more or less making this a duet for sax and vocal. Andy’s graced my songs before, but this time he brought out a soprano sax, which I think gave it a very unique sound. I ran it by Scofugate (Scott Fugate) to see if he could give me a drum track, and he was right on target, as usual. I try to avoid making my songs predictable, but Scott is always ready for whatever I pitch. Both these guys are very versatile, and have delved in many styles and genres. MacJams has a golden roster of talent. I’m amazed at what they can turn one of my songs into. It’s always exciting to see.

But, here tis, all spiffied up, and without the cobwebs. We hope you enjoy it.

Terry Pearson (davisamerica2): Vocal, harmony, guitars, piano, bass, mix
Scott Fugate (scofugate): Drums
Andy Wigzell (awigze): Harmony, soprano sax

Lyrics
Sweet Agony

Love is sweet agony
When you find it where it shouldn’t be
Many lonely nights you’ll pace the floor
As your heart and mind play tug of war
And you must wear a disguise
Never look into her eyes
Oh you’d be a fool if you tried

The whirlwinds of reality
Fan the flames of fantasy
If you take a stand you’ll take a fall
It really makes no sense at all
Only one thing is clear
Whenever she’s near
Everything else just disappears

And it’s a shame. A shame, shame, shame
It’s a shame. A shame, shame, shame

Love is a tragedy
When the heart is bound to secrecy
You can’t let on what you feel inside
That yearning you must always hide
And there are things you want to say
You want to look at her all day
But you must keep her
In the corner of your eye

And it’s a shame…….etc.

If you can hold on to your sanity
And deny this love that can never be
It’s sure to go away in time
This could be the perfect crime
Then you’ll gather up the parts
Of a sad, broken heart
And leave that sweet agony behind. And it’s a shame…….etc.

Thanks for joining us, Andy.
They say there's too much sax on TV, but we don't have enough of it here on MacJams! I knew this song would mesh well with it. You did a great job. Thanks, brother.

Very good
From the first sax note this one was a winner. Like the song structure, lyrics, the chorus is well sung and catchy. Great Job!

That chorus was an add on from a few years back. It seemed to cap it off pretty well. We all thank you for the kind words. Hopefully, there's more to come.

Cool sax, indeed!
I think I heard Andy's sax on this long before I even heard of Andy! He just mosied in and made himself comfortable. The same with Scott. They see that question mark tatooed on my forehead and take the wheel. They get me there every time. Thanks, Bro, from the whole crew.

Sweet Agony
The "poppy" vibe contrasts with the lyrical sadness. Well sung, Terry. Andy's sax reminds me of any number of early Van Morrison tracks and Scott is on the money as always. Really like the piano, too. Fine post. Thanks, Peter.

Yeah, I figured "poppy" would offer some degree of hope to a seemingly hopeless situation. As Annie said, "the sun will come up tomorrow." Scott and Andy were great on this. Real pros! We appreciate the kind words. T

great job on the vocals, what a tongue twister and fine job by Andy/Scott. I like the catchy chorus, really brings this to the next level. Cool pauses here and there, enjoyable listen.

Sure twisted my tongue!
I knew how I wanted to say it, but really struggled with the phrasing to make it work. The chorus gave me a breather. Thanks for tuning in, John. We all appreciate it. T

That bounce drove away those dark clouds
which should have covered such a bleak theme. I wanted to provide a glimmer of hope to all who can relate to such a plight. I think I spent more time on that piano, as simple as it was, than any other part i the song. Andy got to try out a new instrument, and he ran with it. I was shooting for a duet between vocal and sax. Scott gave us the perfect beat. Thanks for tuning in, Victor. Glad you liked it. T

Smooth flow, and the lyrics come across strongly. A simple song done well - you make it sound easy, although there's real quality in the performances here. Just what I like!

Smooth flow, that's what I like to hear.
I'm glad it came across that way. It really began a little jerky, at least the piano did. These guys did a great job taming and toning. Glad you liked it. I really tried to get the lyrics right on this. T
