Oh Dear Penelope

Description
So I decided to channel my inner 13-year-old and write the cheesiest late-'60s bubblegum pop song I could manage. This is what poured out. I'm doing everything on this -- all the vocals, the 12-string acoustic, the Epiphone Casino, the MIDI Vox Continental AND Farfisa, the crappy MIDI horns, the out-of-rhythm tambourine... this one is all on my head.

I would like to think it's a good kind of cheese -- perhaps a room-temperature brie, or a nice smoked gouda -- but I am perfectly willing to face up to the fact that it may, just maybe, be crappy old Velveeta.

Lyrics
Oh dear Penelope
I’ve been developing
All these ridiculous
Feelings for you
Stammering, stumbling
Tongue-tied and tumbling
What is an innocent
Boy like me to do

I know there’s other guys
It comes as no surprise
Girls half as cute as you
Never are alone
So what am I to do
I’m so in love with you
It’s near impossible
To make you my own

I’m afraid that this is futile
Trying hard to catch your eye
Every time I see you I just die
Unrequited love is brutal
Do you even know my name
Never mind, I’ll love you all the same

Blue eyes beguiling
And now you’re smiling
I’ll bet your kisses are
Sweeter than wine
You’re so adorable
It’s kind of horrible
You’ve never noticed I
Wish that you were mine

[instrumental break]

I know heartache isn’t fatal
But that doesn’t ease the pain
Can I ever love like this again
I guess I will have to wait’ll
I’m sure that you know I’m there
If I ever want to show I care

Oh dear Penelope
I’ve been developing
All these ridiculous
Feelings for you
Blue eyes beguiling
And now you’re smiling
What is an innocent
Boy like me to do
Oh dear Penelope
What am I to do
Oh dear Penelope
I’m in love with you

First of all, please don't knock Velveeta - mix it with salsa and melt and it's an awesome dip. Now on to Penelope: I really like this. Your backing vocals complement the song nicely. Good production value on this song in my opinion.

Oh dear cholesterol...
I doubt my heart could take the strain of that dip. Thank you for the kind words!

Oh Dear Penelope
I love Velveeta. And this track is way better than Velveeta. Sweet tune and a wonderfully authentic arrangement. I love the tambourine. The Beatles always made such great use of the "out-of-rhythm tambourine." Good on you for keeping it alive and well.

Creme-cheese alert!
It's a cheese overload. John yer in need of help... Get some Traffic records, listen to something else! The ear worms have eaten yer soul.
Beside all that this is brilliant. Yer production is dead on. All the decisions made here are dead on. It's Brill building meets Joe Meek, or something.
Just an idea. You need some authentic PAMS commercials from '66 to put between yer offerings... lol. Thanks for sharing yer talents here with us.

'60s AM Radio
A sound I strive for constantly. I almost went mono with the mix.

And no worries about my music cred -- today will be spent listening to the Fragile and Close To The Edge albums by Yes. I may not be able to produce that kind of stuff, but man do I love it.

I like Cheez-Whiz, myself ...
... and-d-d-d-ddd the crappy yellowish-plastic stuff they use on my all-time fave food:   The Original McDonald’s Cheez-burger!”

Ahem.   (koff, koff, choke)   Well, maybe not.

Still, this is a great little tune, well done, and absolutely like the cheese that, until now, I had mercifully forgot.   ;-)

Remind's me
of my friends record player, 45's and all that teeny bopper we use to explore. This would have fit in, but I have to say this sounds better produced. I'm impressed.

I did my best to emulate that sound and that era, but a little of my production sensibilities did creep in.

You got the feel and sound just right. Nice work. Don't think of this as cheesy, more like an homage.

very catchy. got stuck in me head and I had to come back and leave a comment. I sometimes wish I could write simple lyrics like this. I don't think it's as easy as some people make out..or maybe it's just me.
You've got that 8 track production technique down well.
Don't know if that's planned or by error…but it works on this
Good stuff
cheers

"8 track production technique"
Absolutely planned, and thank you for noticing. Wouldn't be authentic bubblegum pop if it didn't sound like you were playing it on crappy '60s-'70s audio equipment or AM radio. I almost mixed it in mono.
