Don't Go In The Water

Description
This is my second solo effort this year! We're in a PBGB lull at the moment, and I'm finding my writing mojo again.
We're back from spending time in Australia's "Top End" around Kakadu in the Northern Territory, and inevitably, I was overwhelmed by the beauty and the danger of the place. If you are on FaceBook, I have just uploaded more photos from the Top End - mainly from the amazing Yellow Water Billabong.
This song came pretty easily.
Special thanks to Levi on drums!

Lyrics
Where The Wild Things Are
©2014 Neil Porter

I've been where the wild things are
I've been up where nothing sleeps at night
I've been where the wild things are
I've been where the wildlife likes to bite

Don't go in the water there
Don't go in the water there
I've been where the wild things are
Don't go in the water there
Don't go in the water there
I've been where the wild things are

Up north it can get so hot
Up there you don’t get to sleep
Up there it can get so hot
Beauty that’ll make you weep

Don't go in the water there
Don't go in the water there
I've been where the wild things are
Don't go in the water there
Don't go in the water there
I've been where the wild things are

It’s another world up north
Wilder than my wildest dream
It’s another world up north
More beautiful than anywhere I’ve been

Don't go in the water there
Don't go in the water there
I've been where the wild things are
Don't go in the water there
Don't go in the water there
I've been where the wild things are

Skankin!
Very nice Neil, great mix too. As for going in the water there, no way! I wouldn't even venture into a swimming pool. From what I've heard, your average Oz pool contains at least five large crocs. ;)

Top tune anyway, nice job.

Don't go in the water
I like the two elements in the lyrics - wildness and beauty. Beautifully clean backing. I like the organ a lot. And the lyrics give good advice, from what I've heard! Good one, Neil.

Over time...
Your productions have gotten simpler and at the same time have sounded fuller. One guitar where you might've had several before, one drum or percussion track, a single vocal track...overall, it comes across as more direct, more confident, more self-assured and yet, each instrument or element has its space to bloom.

I like the organ in this, and the bass pulse. I also think it's another strong vocal from you...

As fellow professionals, we can talk later about your disturbing fascination with deadly Australian fauna...

:)
Baiting potential visitors from lands with a more benevolent set of fauna (in your case we'll put aside the grizzly bear for a moment) is a national pastime, up there with aussie rules football and drop bear hunting. The crocs were really someting else - and relatively safe as long as you Don't Go In The Water.

Just after writing the above reply
I found this news http://www.ntnews.com.au/news/northern-territory/remains-found-after-fisherman-taken-by-croc-at-adelaide-river/story-fnk0b1zt-1227028542104 It's hard to be too sympathetic. There are signs everywhere up there about the dangers of crocs, and you wouldn't need to be a genius to figure out that "entering the water" is a pretty sure-fire way of attracting the wrong sort of croc attention. The photo of Brutus in the article is rather unsettling.

Agreed...
I've been preaching the mantra "less is more" for some time now, and this song has that concept nailed. Your backing band is clean and unobtrusive and supports the vocal perfectly...I also agree with the use of the organ: subtle and effective. And the clipped rhythm at the end of phrases ("Don't go in the water..I've been where") is so musically effective (because it is a bit unusual) as well as being lyrically effective (because it continuously underscores your theme). Great song.

Don't Go In The Water
Maurice Sendak eat your heart out. Or perhaps one of our "wild things" can do it for him :-) Fantastic groove, Neil. Really like the vocal work, too. "Levi" did a fine job as well. Great mix, so "meaty". Very nice, indeed. Thanks, Peter.

Water
Nice clear mix. Reminds me of a Bluesy Reggae and I like the touch organ. Seems like it captures your neck of the woods nicely.

i like
the repetitive, cyclical style of the lyrics, and the backing track. Your vocals are nice and ragged. I'd have liked to hear the singing come in a bit behind the beat to give the track a more tangible groove. Really nice work.

Don't Go In The Water
I know what you mean. Me and many of my fellow Floridians don't go in the water either. Gators, bull sharks. Find a pool! Great track. Live feel. Digging the full and throaty bass tone and warm guitar.

Such
a mellow song and then, all I can of is getting bitten in two by an alligator or a crocodile. My brother tried to push me into an enclosure featuring those guys when I was a little kid. I saw those big teeth up close. I can't swim worth a darn. That's probably a good thing. Love your vocal: warm and magnetic. And believe me, I will not go in the water.

Don't Go In The Water
Man, you're making some fine tunes these days. Love this groove. Very warm mix and your vocals sound real smooth. Cool lyrics ... "up north it can get so hot" that's so strange to me because anything north in Canada is cold. The organ is a perfect compliment to the off beat guitar rhythm.
Great tune.

Reggae groove
Hey Neil,
A great feel and groove to this, and you pull this off with flying colours. A nicely ambiguous lyric ( reminds me of Banana Republic by the Boomtown Rats), typically clean production and your vocal rides all of this wonderfully. I can never get an organ sound to work on my tracks, it sounds very natural here .
