Staircase To The Moon

Description
Another Broome trip fingerstyle guitar instrumental.

Between March and October each year, when conditions are just right, visitors to Broome in the North West region of Western Australia are treated to a natural spectacle - the Staircase to the Moon.

The natural phenomenon of the Staircase to the Moon occurs when the full moon rises over the exposed mudflats of Roebuck Bay at extremely low tide creating the optical illusion of a staircase reaching for the moon.

The staircase occurs three nights each month from March to October.

Unfortunately, we were not there at the right time but the magic of the name and some great photos inspired this piece.

My Paul Read Smith Angelus is a wonderful, wonderful acoustic guitar but it is so rich and resonant that I am finding it hard to capture its essence on a recording. I have tried numerous stereo and X/Y mic configurations but in the end I settled for a single AKG small diaphragm condenser aimed at the 14th fret from about 12 inches for this post.

Unedited, live take - you can tell I am alive by the breathing...

As always, thanks to those who drop by for a listen.

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter :-)

Dare I say...
...better than "Stairway To Heaven"? Your "staircase" has great character and certain stately quality that you perform with careful attention to the inner details as it moves along. Such a pleasant song. I really like the lower bass playing the tune. Much enjoyed. It could easily go on for another minute.

Humbling
Thanks, Vic. The PRS is a great guitar and it is pretty humbling trying to live up to it, actually. Glad you thought this came across okay. Take care, Peter.

A most reflective moon...
...and as Paul mentions, filled with lots of those delightful turns and nuances that gives this such a fine taste Peter. Yes, I could kind of hear there was a human behind all this, but as with all good music, your playing has a life of it's own and it was wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Nuance
Thanks, Michael. I have been knocking this tune around for a few weeks now and it took a while to get the fluency and dynamics that I wanted. Nuance is such a nice word :-) Take care, Peter.

Staircase to the Moon
Gentle melody. Clean picking. I like the way the different bass and treble lines complement each other. The richness of the guitar comes through. Beautiful work!

Be careful...
Thanks, Philip. Yes, I love the bass growl from the PRS. You wanted a CD of Broome instrumentals. Be careful what you wish for :-) Talk very soon. Peter.

Staircase
Remember to breathe, Peter! Great stuff - the guitar sounds excellent. I googled a PRS Angelus and it looks fantastic too. Really beautiful playing, I have no idea where the musical ideas came from to form all that because quite frankly that doesn't happen to everyone, you know. You could argue that a noise gate would take the breathing out, but personally I like it in there. It's like you're in the room. Superb stuff and again hats off for some excellent musicianship.

Noodle with the lot
Thanks, Stephen. The guitar is just fantastic and looks just like this one - http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AngelusSTE. I got it second hand (2010 model in mint condition) . It is just a joy to sit down with it and noodle. It does make me breathe more heavily when I am playing it :-) Take care, Peter.

Real music
Staircase to the Moon - that's a new phenomena to me. And a great idea for a song.

It takes a while to sync with a new instrument. A big powerful guitar can be an intimidating thing .. and it can take a lot of playing to get intimate with it. I like what I've been hearing.

Take all of the breathing out .. and all of the room noises, etc., .. and you'll end up with a pristine but sterile-sounding environment. This is keeping it real.

Still courting
Thanks, Warren. Yes, the guitar and I are still getting to know each other's moods :-) I have recorded a few times in the past with a mask on but I look stupid and don't play with the same freedom... I am aiming for an "in the room" feel so I am glad you liked what eventuated. Take care, Peter.

The little bass lines connecting the chords work well. The middle eight got my attention, well served and satisfying piece of work. Thanks for posting here at Mac Jams. The quality of your work keeps the bar high.

Connecting dots
Thanks for taking risking a ride on the staircase, Daug. The piece is pretty simple in some ways but those bass runs do connect the dots quite nicely, as you say. Take care, Peter.

Organic
Thanks, Chris. The guitar is wonderfully warm and resonant naturally so I am glad that is starting to come across in recordings. The high end Martins and Taylors I tried against it probably would have recorded more easily but their tone was a bit brighter and less "organic" when compared with the Angelus. There was no contest in the end... Take care, Peter.

Inspired
Thanks, Terry. I tend to favour acoustic instrumentals that are lyrical and evocative (rather than flashy) and this guitar makes me want to play, a lot, so hopefully more inspiration is on the way. Take care, Peter.

Staircase To The Moon
Peter you are right, a very rich big sound from the Paul Read ... and you have captured a wonderful tone. I would die for that sound. No cheapo there. As far as miking a big bottom beauty like that it sometimes works putting one mic at about 12 inches at the neck like you did then another a few feet away from the front ... more like a room mic. Anyway, another fine piece Peter.
Cheers

A joy to behold
Thanks, Stan. The tone of the guitar is a joy to behold and I am still scratching the surface re recording it. I will try your suggestion, thanks. The guitar seems to force me to noodle with more of a purpose :-) Take care, Peter.

Staircase
Isn't it amazing how grand landscapes and nature inspire the great melodies in all of us? Some are materialized as great songs as your post right here. Peaceful and reflective (no pun there). I had some decent song ideas from my recent trip, but it will take some time before I can make anything out of those. Cheers.

The things you learn about Nature from MacJams ...
I had no idea about this natural phenomenon ... I shall now put it onto my “bucket list” to someday see it for myself.

A delightful guitar performance ... good in the computer speakers, and even better in the “cans.”   Thank you very much for sharing both the song and the story.

capture its essence on a recording
That seems like a daunting task to do... I guess the audience wouldn't really ever know if you caught it all - but hey... I think it sounds great.

Really nice picking there.

Staircase To The Moon
I dig the inspiration for this piece, Peter. Your guitar playing is clean and crisp and while you may feel you are not doing your guitar justice, it still sounds really really good, with a rich, warm tone. Enjoyed this, my friend -

Sounds Great
A very nice little tune and well-played.

I can hear the sweet tone you're talking about, Peter. It sounds like you're close to finding the *sweet spot* on your guitar. The bass is a bit thick, so I'm guessing slight incremental tilts downward toward the high strings will set you there. ;)
