Description
This track is a single take performance direct to GarageBand using the stuff pictured above. What my band mate Chris calls "Bud's Instrument". What you are hearing is a live mix of various manipulated loops along with layers of live analog synthesizer. Everything runs through the small Mackie 4 channel mixer on the left and the synth is routed through the guitar effects on the floor. There are three different looping pedals available and this track made heavy use of the iPad app Samplr that lets me effect and mix up to six samples at a time.
Many of the samples are taken from my own music or made to order as it were, and I also scour the web for material like the Tibetan prayers that can be heard in this piece.
This "instrument" is the result of losing the ability to play guitar after shoulder surgery - an ongoing condition as my body is rejecting the hardware used in the repair. The real challenge has been getting proficient enough with this rig to perform live with others - in which case I do not pile on the tracks like I did here.
Hope you enjoy this little excursion - and thanks for stopping by.

Thanks Bill
A lot of what your hearing is not what it seems. Melodic samples became rhythm tracks and drums became bass tones. Having fun with the alchemy.

Musical peril!
This gave me quite an exciting and expectant feel Bud--I could see this used in an adventure movie very easily. There was some instrument in there I really loved, but I wouldn't know what the hell to call it--you know me, I know so little about the inner workings of this style of music, but I enjoyed it lots. Thanks! (PS: Look at all that equipment! Let me guess--people outside can tell you're at work in your studio because all the house lights are flickering off and on!)

Not sure what instrument you might be referring to
could be a synth line or any other number of things. Melody or rhythm? All the gear fits in a suitcase without having to break it down too much. Sorting out the plugs and cables is the challenge in a dark club. Time to wear a headlamp.

A real challenge
To actually use hardware to create music, much more challenging than using digital instruments. I'm really digging the results, The prayers add a nice touch. Cool Kevin.

Well John - truth told there's a bit of both
the synth is pure analog but I am triggering loops and samples that are digital - though they often get run through hardware on their way to the mixer and amp. It's really a hybrid - but there is no midi involved - so it gets weird when it comes to pitch and time.
Thanks for stopping by.

For something that's loopy/samply,
...and synthy...it really has it's own perky little groove, Kevin... I found my feet tapping to it, and didn't expect to...

It's got that quality that's very cool in instrumental music in that you can let it do a bit of "background magic" and let it find its way in through an ambient route, or you can listen directly and deeply and it just sounds interesting...

Quite the collection of sounds and textures...

Ed - it's nice you let this in
I realize that in the end it sounds much like your basic GarageBand loop mash-up with some synth noodling on top. The wild card is that there is no undo or edit opportunity as the elements are brought together. This piece is denser than what I intend to be doing with other collaborators in a live setting.

new rig....
you are really getting this rig down and creating trippy stuff.

looking at the photo i'm not sure if you have enough pedals yet :-)

sorry to read about your shoulder continuing to give you problems. i've been MIA from forums and facebook, visual problems.

I once worked with a grip on a film set
and when I asked for a tool that he didn't have he said "Tools are a sign of weakness". It's my goal to reduce the number of pedals as I get the most out of the synth. It's a learning curve.

Very trancy stuff. Add some mushrooms and your audience will have spiritual lift-off.

Why would I share my shrooms?
That's what the music's for.
Thanks Vic. I could hear some swirling recorder in a mix like this one day.

Finding a way
Not good news on your shoulder recovery program .. which is disconcerting. The good news proclaimed in this positive vibe is that you are still finding a way to let the music pour out. New methods lead to new pathways .. ways that you may never have gone down except for the obstacles placed in your former path.

This piece has a nice mix of straightforward simplicity and interlaced complex threads and textures.

The right tool in the right place : )

Thanks for dropping by Warren
The shoulder thing has turned into a bit of a game changer. Just as I thought I was gonna slide into 60 with grace and style. Oh well. New challenges and new roads as you say.

Great to see that the music is still coming despite the injury setbacks. Atmospheric and laced with latent tension. Creative and insistent. Take care, Kevin. Regards, Peter.
