Description
Recorded live during my unsuccessful third engagement at the Ashtray Room of the Hotel Tiptop, featuring my opening act this season, Gilbert Gottfried.

Thanks for listening! And a year's supply of Johnson's Wax and 6-piece Samsonite Luggage set (and for our British listeners, a year's supply of Marmite--one jar) to anyone who can tell us what "kickin' the gong around" really means!

Michael

"Minnie the Moocher" was written in 1931 by (the great) Cab Calloway.
Accompaniment courtesy of Bob Boyd Productions.
"Helpful" Man in Audience: Stephen T. ("Mr. Tee")

Hi-De-Ho!
Thanks so much Andrew! I was always a big fan of Cab Calloway and his vocals--he had such wonderful tonality and adroitness (and his diction was absolutely impeccable). I'm afraid "Gilbert" sounded more like "Gilbert" when I was creating this thing, but I don't know, he sounds even more horrifying than usual after converting this thing! You take good care now! Michael

One of my absolute favorites...
When I was a child, my dad acquired a pile of 78s from a friend of his, most of which I nearly ruined by playing over and over and over again. Minnie was one of the ones I enjoyed and played the most. ... your delightful intro routine and performance of this number (slower than the original, as I remember it...) is classic MJK — I have no doubt an evening of your interpretations and your humor would be delightful, indeed. What a nice post, Michael. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks very much Paul!
Glad you liked it! The tempo I used here was pretty much in line with most of Calloway's recordings of it (however, early in his career he used a very slow version and then late in his life, he would do a faster tempo version--probably wanted to get it over with fast after having to sing it so many millions of times!) You take care now, Michael

Very nicely done!
Great "intro" and splendid vocals.

Perhaps I can guess at the friend. A sad loss and a nice little tribute.

You've really got the production of these songs off to a tee. A wonderful live feel and sound. Quite a backing track you've found.

Brilliant Mr Klein!

Cheers

It's something I was putting together when Harold was around, hoping to maybe bring a little smile to him; sadly, he had passed away before I could post it, so I made a few changes in the patter and decided to post it anyway. He'd mentioned when I met him how much he liked these "Hotel Tip Top" recordings and had said "Minnie the Moocher" would be perfect for one, so that's how this came about. I'm so happy to have you in the audience mate--you take good care now! Michael

The very first time I heard the song Minnie the moocher was by Robert Crumb (yes, the cartoonist) and his Cheap suit serenaders. Always loved that song

Oh geez, that old show! To this very day, I'm still a huge fan of that great terpsichore, "Gene-Gene, the Dancing Machine!" I remember having a yellow vinyl 45 RPM of his theme song (which actually was Count Basie's "Jumpin' at the Woodside"). Well, I'll tell you what "kicking the gong around" meant. It was jazz slang for smoking opium! Yup! You know, these recording artists from the past, they had a way of slipping these things in! Nice to hear from you and hope you and your family are doing well. Take care now, Michael

I think this is you at your very best, the consummate entertainer and you certainly entertained me with this piece. I was so happy to hear you singing recently and even happier to know you're with us again--I truly was about THIS close to writing to you to see how you were doing and then you appeared! Nice job, Michael. I'm sure this would make Harold smile. It would probably do the same for Gilbert... just for the opportunity to be relevant and annoy us once again. LOL!

(and thanks for putting your first name in there--I'm not sure I ever knew it--should be easy to remember as "Joe" was my dad's name!) Oh yanno, Gilbert sounded so much more realistic and twice as obnoxious when I was creating this thing, but somehow in the final mix, it wound up sounding more like me--and boy, can I be as obnoxious sounding as him when given the opportunity!. Say, thanks for stopping by and for you encouraging words--I have a lot of respect for you and it means a lot! Take care now, Michael

Yes, it is definitely one of the all-time FUN songs to sing and one of the great moments in my young filmgoer's heart was seeing the great Cab Calloway (age 76!!) giving this his all in "The Blues Brothers". I have the extended version of the film and his sequence is presented in it's entirety as a bonus--just amazing, really he was! Thanks again and great hearing from you--take care now! Michael
