Description
I wrote and recorded this in the depths of the "Global Financial Crisis", and it's one of a number of my older songs that I've decided to spend some time remixing - and also re-playing/singing some parts. This has new bass and a revitalised drum track. I've also taken much more care dealing with the vocal parts.
I really enjoyed having Jan singing backing vocals on this - we've enjoyed singing along during the revision ;)
New mix using Logic Pro X and Ozone 5 makes for a much more satisfactory overall sound than the previous version.
This one is going into the "new. revised PBGB" repertoire list hopefully - might finally get to play it live!
Hope to have another new one ready in the near future.

Lyrics
Money To Burn
© 2009 Neil Porter
Capo on 3
I spent a lot of money
On a big, big house
I put a lot of dollars
In a bad, bad plan
Too much money
Going down the drain
I owe a lot of money to a bad, bad man

I spent a lot of money
Buying shares and things
I blew a lot of cash
Buying diamond rings
I flew around the country
In my flash jet plane
I owe a lot of money to a bad, bad man

I had money to burn
It can’t buy love
I had money to burn
Don’t grow on trees
I had money to burn
You can’t take it with you
I had money to burn
It just isn’t everything

I work all year
At an all day job
I spend a lot of time
With the folks I rob
I lost a lot of money
Way too much money
I owe a lot of money to a bad, bad man

I had money to burn
It can’t buy love
I had money to burn
Don’t grow on trees
I had money to burn
You can’t take it with you
I had money to burn
It just isn’t everything

Had a wife and kids
That I hardly saw
They spent all my money
And they wanted more
Too much money
Going down the drain
I owe a lot of money to a bad bad man

I spent a lot of money
On some big, black cars
I drank a lot of money
In my favourite bars
Too much money
I just threw it away
I owe a lot of money and its time to pay

Money to burn
Money to burn
Money to burn
Money to burn
Root of all evil!

Burning down the house
Sigh .. I remember those pre-crash days of yesteryear when I had money to burn.

With its relentless drive, this song is a scorcher. The vocals are spot on.

It may be grounded in a specific time and place, i.e., the global financial crisis of 2009, but its theme is universal and works well as a morality play.

I like the urgency of the arrangement. Strong lyrics. Insistent vocal. Bright mix. Tasty guitars. Time on this was time well spent, Neil!

This song just rips . . .
It starts right out with some very surprising harmonies, a very simple riff that seems to have just a few chords in it, and yet, always another twist upon that riff.   The song builds in intensity but does it slowly, and when those guitars let go in the final chorus while the lyrics gradually grow darker, you’re left wondering whether this guy is about to follow those “big, black cars” while wearing concrete shoes.   Nicely done.

Feels like Joy Division
Which is a good thing. Like the ominous feel combined with the urgency of the drum and bass groove.

I just noticed your question - a bit late admittedly :(
The drums are, from memory, played in on the midi keyboard in a basic way and then embellished pretty thoroughly afterwards.

Money to burn
We all dream of having so much money, but in the end as you eloquently sing, it's the small things in life that count more. Now if only the bank would take that attitude towards my mortgage.

Forbidding and insistent, Neil. Different style groove for you but it works really well. Drums are tight. The harmonies work well. Quality guitars and fine production, as always. Top tier post. Regards, Peter.

I haven't heard
the original, but I'm pretty into this. It has swagger. Your voice has swagger, is a bit world-weary. Nice.
