Description
There's a poem in this, so I'm going with "Art Rock," although I don't really know what art rock is. I'm hoping that this piece does not give evidence to that effect. Well, Ramona provides the reading, so I'm off to a good start.

This is a re-post of an old Reggie Pole tune. I started from scratch with the original recordings, made a few small changes, and tried to end up with a cleaner version. There's still some mud where there shouldn't be, but I didn't want to redo the guitar parts. I think it's better.

The poem is called "Of Mere Being," by Wallace Stevens, one of my favorites. Big thanks to Ramona for knocking this out in one take.

----------------------------------------------------------

The palm at the end of the mind,

Beyond the last thought, rises

In the bronze distance.

A gold-feathered bird

Sings in the palm,
Without human meaning,

Without human feeling,
A foreign song.

You know then that it is not the reason

That makes us happy or unhappy.

The bird sings.
Its feathers shine.

The palm stands on the edge of space.

The wind moves slowly in the branches.

The bird’s fire-fangled feathers dangle down.

Thank you, Harald
It's not quite polished to the point I would like, but I think it's an upgrade to the first version.

Hi, Karen
Well, Ramona has her own thing going, and she's very good at it. This could probably be viewed as a big departure for her. I doubt we will team up again, although I would definitely be up for it. I was lucky that she agreed to do this.

Hey, Tim
Not a great mix, but it was a challenging project. It's not bad, and better than the original, but still… Anyway, thanks for coming by.

The Bird
Hey Les - haven't seen your name in the new song page in awhile. This is very cool - reminds me a lot of some of Rush's work. Ramona's sultry spoken vox give this such a dreamy quality - I dig the free form feel and it's cool how you have her moving around in the mix - nice! I really enjoyed this, man - great to hear something fresh from you (both)!

Hi, Sig
Yeah, it's been awhile --- hardware deficiencies and work demands. Thought I would clean this up and re-post, for old times sake. Ramona definitely delivered on this, and it wouldn't have been the same without her. Thanks for the comments on the mix. The range of possibilities was overwhelming, and I just had to choose something and let it go.

Word Songs
Very nicely done. You know, there is a spoken word category - it could've gone in there, too. But Art Rock works for me.

As Philip18 just wrote - love those crunchy guitars!

Hi, Warren
Yeah, I guess it could be spoken word. I always have trouble with these genre categories, and I usually just default to progressive rock. Someone once commented that my genre choice of "progressive rock" was incorrect because the tune didn't progress enough hahaha. Well, probably doesn't matter much when it comes down to it. Anyway, thanks for coming by.

the bird 2
now i have a second version of this most ambitious project. good grief, your bass player kicks so much ass. the soloing in the last third of the song is choice, and Ramona's voice puts this over the top making it one of the best tunes I've heard on MJ. the d/l is much appreciated. thanks, Les!

Les_Kloo said 975 days ago (January 18th, 2015)
Hi, Steve
Yes, the second version. I think it's a little betterly cleaned up. Still not perfect, but it's gonna have to do. Ramona pretty well nailed it, leaving me with the problem of choosing one version of the infinite possible ways to arrange music and voice (not a bad problem to have, but still…). Always second guessing, and third guessing, and .... I really appreciate your enthusiastic comments on this. Makes it worth the effort. Thanks much.

I'm not a rock expert...
..although I did develop a fondness for Queen and several other rock bands between Benny Goodman and Red Norvo, so pardon my lack of articulating my thoughts on this piece--often I'm reduced to how it felt rather than other musical intricacies. This one greatly appealed to me, it really captivated me--I think in cinematic vernacular (or how the word is used to describe certain films, it "manipulated" me, and very deftly, in terms of the built up expectancy and the "pay off", which takes a different and unexpected kind of turn. I don't know--I just enjoyed this dammit! I did feel Ramona's (excellent) reading could have been a bit more less foggy--on top of the score at some points, but I know my ideals are set apart from more contemporary music and if I remind myself of that particular, it's not such a concern after all. I'm sounding like some half-assed music critic--it would behoove me to stop here. The main thing is, I really liked it. Thanks!

Hi, Michael
This is a challenging comment to respond to. Please feel free to critique. No doubt, your musical perspective differs quite a lot from mine. We can disagree at some fundamental level, but there's usually no right or wrong, just choice. Vocals in proggy-type music are usually not the centerpiece, but play a more integrated role as one of the "instruments." Often, the lyrics don't matter that much (although the words here are far beyond anything I could come up with), just the overall effect. The idea of the band backing the vocalist is usually dispensed with. On the other hand, I'm also not experienced with mixing vocals, so it could have just been incompetence on my part. The first version was much worse in that respect. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I appreciate your insights.

Drama. Yeah, I s'pose. Thanks for that observation. Hopefully, not too exaggerated. And yeah, Ramona makes the difference. Too bad she's not around much these days.

Mr. Oop
Oh, man. I used to read that strip when I was a kid. So you've left the mammoth hunts behind and taken up music. I would never have expected that, especially since it was so hard to find an affordable Strat during the Upper Paleolithic. Anyway, thanks very much for coming by and giving our tune a listen. We're glad you liked it, Alley.

Ramona insinuates herself into this stellar mix, Les. Hypnotic. When's the live tour? I'm seeing a Greek amphitheatre with laser lights! :-) Thanks to you both. Kind regards, Peter.

Laser lights
My band days are long behind me, I'm afraid. I'm not missing them so much. No more ornery drummers to deal with. Lasers are appropriate sometimes, I guess. Depends. Anyway, it was a fun challenge to work Ramona's reading into a more-or-less finished chunk of sounds. I'm sure it could be insinuated (as you say) into several other musical backgrounds. An ambient piece is a no-brainer, for example. Thanks for the comments, Peter.

Progtastic
I can identify with this more readily than the blues, straight - ahead rock and more or less anything else except English Folk. Nice to hear the Kloo machine back in action. Are drummers ornery? I must tell David.
