Description
I bought a used iPad mini recently and took it to North Carolina this week where I was working. Downloaded the iOS Garageband app that comes with about 60 loops and has a slight learning curve and greatly limited functionality - but it's still kind of fun to fingerpaint - and it has a sampler feature that's pretty cool.
So - on the plane I threw together some loops mixing Arabic and Cuban styles to create some weird disco thing.
The next night in my room I was listening over and over and started hearing Donna Summer - thinking it might work. Turns out "Love to Love You Baby" was in the same key and I just needed to slow down my track from 120 to 96 to make it fit.
I sampled the recording by playing the song off youtube on my laptop and recording it with the pinhole mic on the iPad into the sampler.
After some tweaking I went to sleep. The next night I added the radio frequency synth thing using the audio bus feature to record the softsynth version of the Putney VC3 - and tonight I did the same with the iDensity granular synth app processing a spoken word piece (the end of the track).
I had to post the mix to Soundcloud and then download to master in Garageband on my laptop to post here.
Old school loopy cheesy.

Happy Valentines Day.

works very well
dunno if i could be arsed with the convoluted process you describe, even just to upload it just so you could download it in order to upload it here.... specially when you can do it so much easier on a real computer...but undeniably, you created something very nice here

love how you dropped donna into the mix

Necessity
...is the mother of groovy. This is so cool, Bud and, like Tim, I was totally caught up in it. I was surprised when it was over. This would sound so good on a movie soundtrack, some futuristic disco techno dystopian drama. Love it and am super impressed that you did it in the iPad.

When I first joined MJ
I was traveling a lot and made music wherever I was with an old slow macbook. This little iPad is cool. I initially bought as a performance tool to play soft synths and such with the band. It's a cool sketch pad for ideas too.

I love your process notes. Always soon cool to learn how you do your inimitable thang.

Dude, feeling a little left out on the LOVE thing. When was this challenge announced? Couldn't find anything on the forum. So super secret members-only challenge? Curious.

Loved the tune! Awesome as always!

Very clever
I've tried working with GB on the iPad and it's not exactly intuitive.

Impressive work Kevin.

I've got the bug
since I'm traveling most of this month (in Plano, Texas right now) I'm doing the RPM challenge on the iPad. Used it to record the takeoff and landing on my flight today. Who knows where this will end up?

I like the Middle Eastern going on in this...
..but there's lots more playing out in this that really tickled my fancy. I liked this very much Bud--great work! (PS: Just what is that going on around 1:50 to the ending? It sounds like a voice, but then again, I'm not entirely sure. That was neat!)

Donna Summertime groove
First off, I admire your patience for the convoluted route you had to take to make this happen. I get annoyed just dragging MP3's into Audacity just to boost the volume levels.
Secondly, great sample lifting and placement within the groove and being able to work within the limits of GB on an iPad,
Funky, slightly seedy and just a little bit odd.
Groovy!

Looking backwards while going forward
The sound may be old school .. but the creative process was anything but.

But that was the point of the exercise .. saying to yourself "what if I do this and then add that .." and letting the process take you somewhere. Where you will end up is impossible to guess. But trusting in your artistic skills .. and your decisions .. and letting the song go where it wants to go .. often delivers-up something intriguing.

And here you are obviously enjoying the creative process. That's one of the reasons it's a fun song to listen to.

Perhaps it's also a yard stick (or meter) showing you how far you have come from that initial loops production you mention. We build on the past while utilizing the new tools of the present.
