Lyrics
THE LAND OF SMOKE AND MIRRORS

I’ve been loose
I’ve been tight
I’ve been wrong
I’ve been right
I’ve been distant
And I’ve been near
Put a break on the enthusiasm
Accelerate what is dear
I’ve been wandering in the wilderness
For 60-odd years
Waiting for the fog to clear
In the Land of Smoke and Mirrors

Back and forth
Up and down
In and out
I get a round-round-round
Sharing jokes with blokes
Over cheers and beers
I’ve been high
I’ve been low
I’d like to hang around
But I’ve got to go-go-go
Because things aren’t always as they appear
In the Land of Smoke and Mirrors

When you can’t see what you believe
And when you can't believe what you see
Slogging through the slush and the muck
Is like walking on your knees
They control what they can’t destroy
And they will destroy what they can't control
Whether you’re serious or just curious
Chances are this will end badly

I’ve been messy
I’ve been clean
I’ve been pure
I’ve been obscene
I’ve run from my phobias
And faced my fears
I’ve been here
I’ve been there
Nurturing my nature
Medicating my despair
While dismissing the sneers of peers
In the land of Smoke and Mirrors

I was young
Now I’m old
Life’s a joke
Or so I once was told
Well, I’m still laughing
I want to make that clear
I’ve been crazy
I’ve been sane
Running around
Shouting your name
Choking back the tears
In the Land of Smoke and Mirrors

Smoke & Mirrors
Plenty of smoke and mirrors on display in these tongue-twisting, rhyme-bending lyrics. A melange of self-examination and life commentary that is unique and compelling. Made me think of the circus...? Fine collab. Thanks, guys. Regards, Peter.

Circus act
At times during the edit it felt like I as walking on a high wire. Vic's contributions were voluminous .. so there was more than enough music to mix from and that became the hardest part of making this composition .. a balancing act.

cool to hear the final edit. you did a good job of mixing it all together Warren. it was a pleasure to understand the inner workings of how you compose a tune.

Mixing it up
I was nervous about it .. because mixing is not my forte. Once I developed a reductive strategy to balance our many guitars .. it seemed to come together rather quickly. After a few final tweaks .. it was like saying: this is as good as I can get it : )

Fun indeed. Great work guys. Loved the lyrics and the meshing is/are superlative and unexpected.

Blokes and cheers
The fun of it was not knowing what might come out of collaborating .. which of course is the joy of the unexpected. Well, at least when it turns out with an acceptable level of satisfaction : )

Cheers and beer
You guys gave it a great performance when it comes to the singing in this, the lead guitar on this was great like how it kind of jumps at the end of the lead very cool!

Eccentric
As in, eccentric guitar work. The vocals sound a bit like Robert Crumb, which is all right in my book. Wacky fun, guys.

Balancing act
We were almost guaranteed eccentricity; the trick was finding a balanced blend between our different guitar styles. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Smoke and mirrors
I like the lyrics - the contrasts make sense! Interesting arrangement. Lots of guitars always work well for me. Entertaining collab!

Contrasts
Working with dualities often makes for a fun lyrical exercise. Plenty of dualities and plenty of guitars in this mix!

Getting all of the guitars mixed coherently was the biggest challenge of this piece for me. But then we probably wouldn't keep making music if it didn't offer some kind of a challenge : )
