Description
It's been ages!
This was originally written as a jazz chord exercise, and has been around since February without a melody or lyrics. Some recent stress gave me the lyrics, which are a mixture of current reality and some past dreaming. I came close a couple of times to flipping it to a local singer for the vocals/melody/lyrics, but am happy that I kept it for myself. It's about time I posted something completely new.
I did all the instrumental and vocal parts here.
I seem to have lost the feel for what is good and what isn't lately - this sounds like it might be a good one, but, who knows?!
Hope you like it.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Lyrics
Paint Them How You Feel
©2015 Neil Porter

Trusting you was my first mistake
I didn’t guess you could bring me down so bad
I couldn’t see you were just a fake
Didn’t think you could make me feel so sad

You've seen all the words I've written
You can read me like a book
You can reach your own conclusions
About the roads I took
You can form your own illusions
You can paint them black or white

You were long of limb and I was short of breath
I never thought that my heart could break like that

Would you catch me as I’m falling
Down to earth just like a stone
Or would you watch me as I hit the ground
And leave me there alone
You can have your own illusions
You can paint them black or white

You say you know just how I feel
I never thought I’d hate you being ‘round

I’m putting up my cone of silence
Taking down my “open” sign
Now I’ve seen some dirty players
You’ve done that for quite some time
You can build your own delusions
You can paint them how you feel

Love that intro!
It got me smiling and I knew I was going like this one (no surprise). Really nice groove, Neil. Love the wah at the break. Your vocal seems new. More expressive than in the past? Any way, I like it.

A different kind of tune than your usual fare. You're now 21st century radio ready.

Thanks for listening. Glad that you liked it. Hopefully the bass isn't too thumpy - the Precision sometimes gets a bit out of control 😄
Cheers from Oz,

Love the thumping bass. Everything has its own place in the mix - big, full sound with plenty of variety in the arrangement. Strong lyrics. I have added it to my Neil Porter collection!

Thanks for dropping in for a listen. My comment to Jack re the thumpy bass was for you, so I'll comment on the wah here for Jack: i was once told that once I started using wah guitar, I'd sold my soul .......... but I did enjoy it ;)
Pleased that you enjoyed it.

Always envious of jazzy painters! Loved this one, Neil, and the lyrics worked perfectly. I need this kind of inspiration to get my butt moving. Keep them coming! T

Thanks for having a listen. Inspiration seems to be hard to find for me these days. I suspect the demise of MJ is a big part of the problem - hard to get inspired when hardly anyone is likely to listen. Perhaps I should get off my backside and try some other sites. I'll be very quiet for the next few months, but hope to have some inspiration at the end of that time.
Best wishes from Oz,
Neil

Liking the lyrics and the understated vocal work a lot, Neil. The jazz setting allows you to paint an engaging musical palette that sounds great. Nice warm mix. Glad some creativity has come from the adversity. Take care, Peter.

Thanks Peter
It does seem that I write best when I'm under some pressure - when I was working, I was the most productive I've been as far as song-writing goes. Maybe I should look for trouble a bit more ;)
The backing tracks always sounded nice and warm ond cohesive - I was a bit worried about whether the vocal/lyrics/melody would be up to the backing, but it seems to have worked out OK.
Cheers from "up the road a bit".

A lot to like...
I love the organ-and-guitar break and the general "vamping" feel to the whole thing...

Among the whole of us among the "old guard" I think you may well be the guy who improved in the widest spectrum of musical areas: more expressive singing, better arrangements, learning to program drums...you were always a great bass player, but even there you widened your reach...and your guitar playing, both rhythm and lead, has gotten more and more interesting...

The arc of your recordings, meanwhile, has moved in the direction of simplicity: fewer tracks, but saying more with them... Every bit has its purpose, and it says its thing and then steps back...

A little more lyrical anger and 'edge' in this one than usual...

It's very good to hear a new song from you, Neil...

The production is top notch. That bass tone is killer ... nice and mono and right centre ... logic drums? they sound good ... very solid song writing ... love the chords .... that soulful bridge in the middle and then again at the end is fantastic! just the right length with that funky guitar and the push on the hammond. Great work Neil.

Paint it black .. or white ...
Nicely put together .. with plenty of room to breath.

Take away the deadlines .. and production suffers. When we have all the time in the world to do things .. usually nothing much gets done.

This is nicely written .. with lots of verbal play underscoring the theme of disingenuousness.

I thought you could have jammed out a little longer at the ending.

I
think this is a great one Neil, really love the rhythm and your bass playing with some lovely touches on the guitars and keys.
I thought the bass was nicely recorded and cuts through perfectly, just right for this superb song, very much enjoyed and I hope your inspiration continues, good to hear a new one from you.
