Description
My father would be 95 this coming June 28th. He passed 22 years ago and I still miss him every day.

He was not perfect, no one ever is. He had his problems, flaws and faults but his unwavering support and love for my sister and myself will never be forgotten. Since fathers day approaches and so does his birthday I want to take the time to try and remember the man that brought me into this world.

My father loved the Limeliters and I grew up to their music playing in our home many evenings and weekends and my Dad would walk about the house and sing out the various songs and it always made me happy, it felt like home.

He wasn’t musical and when I began to play guitar he would ask me to learn and later record some of his favorites. I did Cats in the Cradle, Fennario, Mr. Bojangles and a few others for him. I never did Corn Whiskey and I remember him playing it regularly.

So as a tribute to my father this is my take on Corn Whiskey which I remember as a favorite of his. The only version I remember of this is the Limeliters version which you can hear on Youtube at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vuu5wFG98jI

The Limeliters performance in my opinion is a classic, done live and recorded with all the minor faults and intonation differences and it just works. I could never hope to replicate or even come close to it so I went my own direction.

This is for you Dad. I miss you so much. I wish I had your guidance during these recent tough years, you always had something intelligent and uplifting to say. I wish I could hear your words now. Rest peacefully and know you are loved and never forgotten.

On my take:

The song is in 6/8 which is tough for me.

1 finger picked electric guitar fed pod farm 2 acoustic guitar sound.

2 strum tracks for background

2 high guitar tracks to lighten up the chorus and fill out the ending

1 organ track near the end

I used Logic bass and penciled it in.

There are 4 vocal tracks. Two primary, two choral harmony.

The whistle tracks are from my good friend from Denver

Lyrics
Well, I’ve been the moonshiner now these 17 long years
I’ve spent all my money on whiskey and beer
Now I’ll go to some holler and setup my still
And I’ll sell you a gallon for a $2 bill

Corn Whiskey, Corn Whisky, I like you pretty well
You’ve killed all my kinfolk and sent them to hell
You’ve sent all my kinfolk on rot gut and rye
And I guess you’ll send me when I’m ready to die

I’ll go to some grocery and drink with my friends
Where the women can’t follow and see what I spend
Oh God bless those pretty women, how I wish they were mine.
Their breath tastes as sweet as the good old moonshine.

Corn Whiskey, Corn Whisky, I like you pretty well
You’ve killed all my kinfolk and sent them to hell
You’ve sent all my kinfolk on rot gut and rye
And I guess you’ll send me when I’m ready to die

Well its red meat when I’m hungry and moonshine when I’m dry.
Greenbacks when I’m hard up and religion when I die.
The whole worlds a bottle and life’s but a dram
When the bottle gets empty, it ain’t worth one damn.

Corn Whiskey, Corn Whisky, I like you pretty well
You’ve killed all my kinfolk and sent them to hell
You’ve sent all my kinfolk on rot gut and rye
And I guess you’ll send me when its my turn to die

I love the guitars. Is there a twelve string in there? It has that jangle. The additional guitars in the chorus add a nice lift and the 3 against 2 rhythm you play there is really nice. Good job on the vocals, particularly the harmonies on the chorus. Tight punchy mix. Quality work. Dad would have dug it for sure.

Forgot to answer
No... I used to have a 12 string. I do not these days and frankly I can't remember what happened to it but it is likely I traded it for something. It was 12 string electric that resembled a hollow body Gibson.

My technique is this: I require the guitar dry. I double the track and feed it back to make it stereo. I give it some separation then I feed it into Line 6 pod farm. There are some acoustic models in there that sound pretty good. Lastly I take that output into a very slight stereo delay. That gives the guitar which is normally pretty dry some real depth.

Finally the entire song is fed into Ozone 5 for spread, reverb and EQ.

Thanks Karen
I hope he would have loved it. He seemed to like most covers I did for him. I'm still no singer but it is still fun to sing. It has been a rough fathers day for many reasons. Hopefully the next few weeks will level things out a bit.

Yes Sammy
The message is sad, it is the general song that I wanted to remember my father with. He was not a "moonshiner"... he just loved this kind of music.

Hi KC
I'm sorry for your loss. It is difficult. For me the last 3 years have been really tough with a number of life challenges in the career and family fronts. It is times like these that I wish I could sit with him. He may not have had an answer but he always had a thought. I wish sometimes I could hear those thoughts now. Thanks for the listen and comment!

put together and a fine tribute. The time signature is snappy. As far as fathers, mine died when I was 15, 45 years ago. My memories are few and far between.

I am sorry
to hear that your father died when you were so young. That is hard. I tend to think as we age we try to remember our roots a little more. When one of the roots really doesn't get a chance to set in it makes it a little more lonely going forward. Thanks for the listen and comment!

Hi Relic
Thanks so much. One can only hope he is hearing it and enjoying it. I don't tend to believe in that transfer from the living to the dead. I wish I did. It would be comforting to know he was still whole in some fashion.

Thanks for the listen and comment!

Great song
Wonderful playing, singing and production. My dad and yours were born just 4 days apart (6/24/20) and we lost him in 1999. We share some similar story points as well. Yep - none of us are perfect.

Hi Mark. Been traveling in Europe for a while, hence the break from MJ, so I missed this. Back now and easing back into it slowly by chasing down a few missed gems such a this. Wonderful tribute to your dad. A fine old song that is done so well. The guitars sounds great, as does the whole mix. And that is some pretty snappy whistling. Great to hear a new MJ post from you. Take care, Peter.

Your own direction...
...is just fine, Mark. So many nice touches in this recording: the whistling (tough to keep always in tune, but a valiant effort), and the wonderful "space" you've given to the guitar track is especially nice. I really like the clarity of this recording, esp. the sparkle of the guitar track. Very pleasant listen (but such sad lyrics).

Sounds like
This is nice. A style that you don't hear enough these days. Simon and Garfunkel'ish. Really one of my favorite genres of music and your voice and lyrics are perfect for it. The whistling is pretty nice.

On the technical side, I think this would be more of a 3/8 or a fast 3/4 kind of waltzy?? But no matter it is done very nicely!
