A Certain Melancholy

Description
This is No. 151 from my “By The Numbers” series of piano solos. With this one I've added some strings and was able to coax some breath out of a digital flute with some fine-tuning via the sliders which, I think, turned out quite well. Just some reflective music for a few quiet minutes. The piano score can be found at my website here: http://www.paulpage.org/By_The_Numbers_files/One%20Hundred%20Fifty-One.mus.pdf

It's working again!
Sorry that's not about your music, but the site. The music is a gentle and serene piece, though I wouldn't call the mood it produces in me melancholy, more relaxed and meditative. There is the usual subtle touch to the playing too. I am so glad you are able to upload here again.

I do
hear the melancholy in this. It certainly is soothing but there’s also a subtle yearning and sadness that deepens it.
Very happy your upload problems fixed Paul.
Cheers,
Charlie

The flute works so well
in this piece Paul.

Everything in its place and beautifully judged.

Balancing act
I always find it harder to record quiet, reflective music than loud, busy pieces .. perhaps because it's easy to keep adding more more more to a composition because we have the tools now to do that with digital systems. There's not much here - a piano, a flute and some strings .. but those minimal elements, carefully combined in a balanced arrangement, speak volumes.

Bittersweet, Perhaps But...
... not completely melancholic. More like a gentle, wistful meditation. Nice background music while reading some Thomas Merton. ;)

Reflective
The flute sounds really good. It's difficult to get those digi versions sounding real, I'm sure, but you have managed. Strings, piano, flute. It's a lovely mix.

smooth
was the first word that came to mind on the first note. Silk like in its ease. Sounds very "analog" to me.

Melancholy
Another wonderful piece. Meditative, serene, reflective and melancholy all in one. At about 2:20 I hear a slight clash of notes? Maybe I"m wrong. Anyway, awesome as usual!

Beautifully spacious and thoughtful. Gentleness amongst the slight sadness. You're in fine form here, Paul!

I'm playing some golf
these days and my golf coach is trying to get me to relax and set an even tempo as I tend to try to crush the ball all the time. So I need this on my iPod just before I setup for a shot!

The flute sounds damn real. As usual your piano is expressive and perfectly played. Very very nicely done Paul!

A Certain Melancholy
Beautiful, serene opening, Paul. And the flute sounds great in the mix, too. Gentle nostalgia about the good, and slightly less good, times, comes to mind. Just wonderful, as always. Take care, Peter.
