Description
The Trailing Car is from a restored cassette recording I made about 25 years ago. It was simply a guitar and voice, and I never thought to add anything more. It captured the original feel of the song, so I wanted to use it rather than try to duplicate the anguish I must have felt when writing it.
I don’t know what inspired it. I can’t recall having suffered any tragedy back then. I think I just got to wondering how it would feel to lose someone so dear, and have absolutely no comfort whatsoever. It’s a sad elegy, but also becomes a little brutal and angry, so I won’t call it entertaining. I suppose it’s just one of those things you just have to get out.
Roxylee was kind enough to contribute her angelic voice, which, for this particular song, was asking a lot, but I felt my character deserved at least a sweet memory. Thanks, Roxy, you remain undefiled! And thanks, everyone, for listening.

Davisamerica2: Guitar, harmonica and vocals.

Lyrics
The Trailing Car

I was slumbering on this passenger train as it rolled on up the line
Like a baby, you get rocked to sleep as it twists around the pines
And the eyes, they will play tricks on you when they’re focused on a dream
I could have sworn it was you I saw sitting by that mountain stream

But no…..no….no

With vacant eyes, the travelers sit and think of those they’ll meet
Avoiding thoughts of harvest time, they sway like ripened wheat
I know it’s cold and dark back in that trailing car, but I can feel you next to me
Still I can only go with you a ways into eternity

I recall the time we rode this train into a rising sun
We had no reason to believe the day was almost done
We fixed our eyes on paradise, the way that lovers do
But in that earthly paradise, I never dreamed I’d be losing you

And I’m doing all I can to keep yesterday
I’m gathering up every memory we shared
I’m trying hard to hold on, but it’s slipping away
Oh God! This is too much to bear
But you can’t haggle with fate, and as everybody knows
You don’t barter with God when he rakes in his gold

Now they tell me I must carry on, and true love never dies
But I’d never lived until I saw my reflection in your eyes
Now I look for hope in that setting sun as it flashes through the trees
But in the dark and gloomy tunnels, a hopeless face looks back at me

And I’d do anything to keep yesterday
But there’s not a damn thing I can do
I got down on my knees, but I don’t know how to pray
I just know I can’t live without you
I said “Lord, bring her back, if you truly want my soul.
You give her back to me now, or I’ll become the devil’s coal!”

He said “No……No…….No”

Your voice was definitely a "must have" in this, Roxy, and it was intended the character have her loving spirit mourn along side him for a short time. This turned out just how I envisioned it some 25 years ago. Thanks for helping me. You did a beautiful job!

who knows
where these things come from eh? You have pulled in MJ's soulful diva brother and that is a treat. As always the story is well told. This is gold from the vault indeed. Lovely backing vocals Roxy and Terry hats off ... once again. Downloaded.

Trailing Car
Thanks, Bro. Roxy always comes through gloriously! The main objective was to tell the story with the original emotion, hence the old tape, and I knew such anguish would not sound like Pavarotti, though I can tear up with the best of them. But, now that I've had my cry, it's back to that Lacy/Vivian silliness!

Trailing Car
Thanks for tuning in and for the comments, Vic. It's hard for me to throw anything away, and my archives even consist of broken tapes that are just wrapped around their casings with the intention of splicing them back together. This one was intact, luckily.

Great Narrative
I always like a story in the lyrics — this one goes beyond the back story and into the inner story that drives the song. And what a beautiful, yet very simple, performance of this song. Your voice is perfect here, and Roxy's added harmonies are the perfect little lift now and then. I really like the care you have taken in performance and in the mix of all elements. Careful musicianship and mix make this gentle, poignant song just about as perfect as it can be.

Simple seemed to fit here.
I made another mix with the clacking of the tracks throughout, but faintly audible underneath. I felt the monotonous strumming of the guitar served it's purpose here. It was a dreary ride. Obviously, I wasn't looking for pretty here, it was a sad story. Thanks for listening, Paul, and for your kind words.

WOW! With your voice and Roxylee's listening to these lyrics gave me chills. Haunting, but absolutely beautiful. Remembering my lost love, this really hit home. Loved your blended voices!

Thanks, Jeannie!
Pain in proportion to the loss seems to be what might have been my intended illustration here. In putting this mix together, I thought about my own loss years later, and I thought about your Ed too. Wouldn't it be terrible if it didn't hurt at all? Peace, Jeannie. Terry

Classic...
now - 25 years later. Terry, your story telling song is haunting, gripping, and yet uplifting as you tell the tale. Roxylee is the spice that is nice that brings the nostalgia effectively in. Guitar and harp make me jealous. As I said, a classic...

Like an old 25 year old car!
One of those dark places you dare yourself to go to, just to work up the adrenaline. Can't remember where I bumped into this guy, but he made a definite impression on me. Thanks for the comments, Jack.

Thanks for tuning in, KC. There are many things we feel are just too big to fail. Those we love often seem to be as permanent as mountains! I appreciate the kind words. T

How the story goes
Love the story telling .. but it's that mournful moaning that really gets me.

Sad for sure!
I was especially mindful of the moaning, which I tried to make as painful as possible. Anguish is, understandably, not a pretty thing. Thanks for allowing this bit of solemnity into your listening time. I just had to get it out. Peace. T

Way, way back, for sure. Roxy was a gem on this, and I heard her voice in it long before I met her. It was a nice surprise to find that mystery voice here at MacJams. It's a painful song, and I'll try to keep them a little more upbeat, but we all need to have at least one like this, (I guess.) Thanks for tuning in, Bob, and for all the great stuff we've done together. T

Wonderful, emotive ballad, Terry. And it has come up so well from the cassette original. Your vocal sounds like you did it yesterday. The simple guitar accompaniment is perfect. Bringing Roxylee in was genius, too. Really like this. Thanks, Peter.

Epic work Terry.
It reminds me of those story songs (like Running Bear or Johnny Remember Me) back in the 60s.

Really well put together and the stripped back sound works really well with the impassioned vocals and somewhat bleak imagery.

Roxy's voice is used perfectly.

My apologies for not getting to this earlier but I've been in Spain for a couple of weeks with a flaky internet connection!

Cheers

I'm late too, Dick!
I've been busying myself with several things, and tend to neglect my Macjams feeding. I hear great music, and kick myself for missing much of it. Thanks for tuning in. This particular one is just one of those you just have to unload, and hope it isn't too oppressive.
