Lyrics
BAD FISH [BUCKLEY SMITH]

Last night I ate some bad fish
and it tasted just like chicken
Last night I ate some bad fish
and it tasted just like chicken
Now my guts are in an uproar
and my fingers need a lickin'

I put mayonnaise on my fries
and put honey in my tea
I put mayo on my French Fries
I put honey in my Japanese bubble tea
And if I could find the right kind of Belgium chocolate sauce
I'd put it right there on top of my imported French brie

Put a cherry on a sponge cake
you'll get a soufflé
Put a cherry on a sponge cake
you'll get a soufflé
Put a habanero on a tongue
you'll get an auto-de-fe

Slurping soup is a faux pas
I can live without
Slurping soup is a faux pas
I can live without
That is unless the slurping has a rhythm
that makes croutons twist and shout

Last night I ate some bad fish
and it tasted just like chicken
Last night I ate some bad fish
and it tasted just like chicken
Now my guts are in an uproar
and my fingers need a lickin'

Structure
The compositional challenge was trying to string together five verses played differently and making them seem part of a homogenized whole. It works in some places better than others : )

Strange...
...lyrics, music, and accompaniment: the perfect, crazy mix that seems to fit well with this whole ensemble of ideas. you have some very clever twists of words here. I wonder what you're like in real life? ... Fun piece.

Real Life?
Ha-ha, Paul .. I like to think I'm the same in my online presence as I am in real life .. but who knows if that is true? The next time I'm in the San Diego area I'll look you up .. and you can decide for yourself : )

Associations
This is one of the cases where a simple idea keeps growing complexity .. even though it stays fairly simple after all : )

I love all the changes in this, guitar lead is excellent and then I love the riff section with that great tone on your guitars.
This is quite brilliant Warren, love it.

You capture the quirky fun lyrics and music of BNL. Guitars romp and rule in this. I don't know that I'll be eating fish any time soon!

Bacon Naked Lettuce
According to the gourmet chef Anthony Bourdain in his book "Kitchen Confidential" you should never order fish in a restaurant on Sunday or Monday .. but that advice is not the origin of this little exposé on food.

Oblique Musical Angler

This is a pure anti-epicurean delight, with some interesting variations on the theme. It's a very nice companion piece to the Dr. Demento favorite, *Fish Heads* by Barnes & Barnes.

I'm guessing someone slipped a magic mushroom onto your seafood platter, Warren. ;)

Bizarre fun, as always.

Bizzarre memories
Variations on a theme often describes my basic approach to playing the blues. In this case, a specific effort to vary the approach structurally to each verse. I gave up those mushrooms years ago .. but perhaps the memories still linger?

About those fish ...
I remember once chatting with a chain saw artist who told me when teaching students the first project he gave them was to carve a fish. He said, "Everybody can do that."

Bonkers stuff
but I expect nothing less Mr Smith.

Loved it. Never knowing what was coming next and wonderfully bizarre lyrics.

My apologies for not getting to this earlier but I've been in Spain for a couple of weeks with a flaky internet connection!

What's next?
A structure like this could go on endlessly with a subject as general as food. So one has to pick and choose from the buffet .. and try to season each course a little differently. Or something like that : )

A summer vacation in Spain takes priority over a timely MacJams review!

Whenever I visit my Mom she invites me to find something to eat from her freezer. Stuff has been frosting in there for centuries. Thanks but no thanks. Some of that food anxiety may have fed into this song.

But it tastes like chicken
Twists and turns indeed - I now understand what Vic was talking about in terms of the mini-rock opera. This is fringey and cool - not the standard fare which makes the surprises here a real delight. Very creatively put together Warren!

Twist, shout and turn
Don't let that chicken taste fool you!

It's easy to let the familiar blues format of two identical lines followed by a kicker become cliché .. so the challenge is to keep it from being mundane .. both lyrically and musically. Of course, I suppose that should be true of almost anything one writes .. avoid clichés .. and try to be unpredictable : )
