Description
Rain, Sky and Thunder was composed by myself and Jack Hemby, (#1 davisamerica) back around 1974. If we knew this crew back then, we might be all millionaires today. I can never say enough about the vast amount of talent here at MacJams. Jack and I have worked many times with these artists, and each song is transformed into something way beyond our original aspirations. This particular production, however, was hampered all along the way by my crashing computer and internet problems. Most of the mixing was done at my local coffee shop.
I sent my guitar and vocal track to scofugate and jiguma, who created a solid foundation, and then to Bob Rodgers, who crafted a really nice three-part guitar solo. Our favorite Sister, Anne Cozean, sent some great harmony tracks and rescued the song from my own sloppy attempts. Awigze colored it up with his mandolin and helped me retain the wooden sound I originally had. Jack threw in the vibes, which chime throughout and added a great synthesizer, which fills in at all the right places.
My ongoing computer problems are pretty frustrating, but I was finally able to crank out the best possible mix, I feel. We all hope you enjoy our song. We were all happy to see how it gradually evolved into what we have here. Peace. Terry

Terry Pearson (davisameria2) Vocals, guitars
Jack Hemby (davisamerica) Vibes, synthesizer
Anne Cozean (Sisters) Harmony vocals
Bob Rodgers (Bob Rodgers) Lead guitar
Neil Porter (jiguma) Bass guitar
Scott Fugate (scofugate) Drums, percussion
Andy Wigzell (awigze) Mandolin

Lyrics
Rain, Sky and Thunder

Words/music by Jack Hemby and Terry Pearson © 1974

A wind swept through the sleepy town
An icy hand tore the shingles down
In the dark and silent gloom
He walked across the shadowed room
And very quietly, window raised
He stared and thought of better days
A fright mask hung from his wrinkled brow
He wondered what would happen now

How and when, you wonder
Rain and sky and thunder
Are your only friends

His friends are lying six feet down
He stares and listens for a sound
To tell him that there’s someone there
To fill that empty easy chair
But like the leaves that chase the wind
He’ll never have those days again
And when he pulls that window down
He’ll listen to no other sound

Nice band!
Terry, Anne, Jack, Bob, Scott, Andy
From the first time I heard Terry's outline when it came to my inbox, I knew this was going to be a killer. Loved all the playing and singing (great band!), and the song itself just slots into a particular place that Terry and Jack come from musically that I have always really enjoyed.
Excellent work everyone!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I had you in mind for this for some time, Neil, and you never disappoint. For sure, we have a great band here, and I try at every opportunity to focus on everyone's individual contribution as well. That always keeps it capricious and interesting. You, sir, really got down and under on this one! Thanks for joining us! T

Right then ....
I know MJ feels like it is falling down brick by brick nowadays but truth is no matter what happens it is still a place where you can have some fun with some truly talented artist.... and within that process make some friends.....Preaching to the choir ... nuff said ....

Wow ... More music from the "Big Green Box" all grown up .. how cool is that Mr. Pearson ? This band is just like a pair of truly comfortable slippers. Terry well done on the "kitty herding" and keeping the archives open. Well done folks!

Right then....and now
Back to rummaging through the Big Green Box, Jack. I never throw anything away. These songs look great in their new clothes. Kind like switching from bell bottoms to Spandex! (Gotta work on my imagery!) I hope we can keep everyone in the neighborhood. There are some remarkably talented artists here. Just look at how they have transformed our songs!

This song looks young again, and that makes me feel young. Now, if I throw a hip out dancing to it, well,...that changes everything! Glad you enjoyed it. Peace. Terry

That mando sounded great, Andy. Thanks for coming on board! This is, without a doubt, one of the best collabs I've been a part of. Everyone did a superb job!

Rain, Sky and Thunder
The gang are all aboard and, of course, the result is uber impressive. First off, great song, you two. Fine job on the lead vocals, Terry, and having Anne to back you up is always a smart move. Nice, warm mix. Great to hear some mando, too, Andy. Jack, Bob, Neil and Scott all add so much. Stellar MJ band. Thanks, all.

Glad you took a listen, Peter, and thanks for the great comments from all of us. These guys have gotten a pretty good idea on what I have in mind on my songs, but are never shy about inserting their own creativity, and the results are always a delightful surprise. It's becomes a new song for me too, and a 100% improvement.

Great song and excellent collab
I must say that I wrote some really awful tunes back around then - so cool that you and Jack have such an illustrious past. Tell us more. Was this tune written foe a band at the time. Is there an original recording? Hats off to all involved in this production.

Gone but not forgotten.
Those days are past, and Jack and I constantly lament that we didn't know all you guys back then. We threw together short-lived bands with our friends there in Greenville, and made several fairly decent recordings, which are buried somewhere I suppose, but the original spirit of each tune stayed with us, and these artists at MacJams all seem to know where we're coming from, and we never made any recordings as smooth and professional as we have here. Thanks, all you MacJammers!

All Stars
What a well written song, executed perfectly by this fantastic lineup. I never get tired of these super-collabs - it just exemplifies the high level of musicianship that is has been and continues to shine at Macjams. Congrats to all of you guys and gal!

Thanks, Chris
This place is certainly a songwriter's paradise! I never had the discipline to be a great musician like a lot of you guys, but it's quite a joy to have such talent being loaned to you for your songs, and it's amazing to hear what these people can do when they pool their art! Great stuff every time. Thanks for tuning in, from all of us!

Classic Vibe
Amidst the claps of thunder and the pouring rain I hear something in this performance that reminds me of the group America... and even a bit of the Mamas & Papas... a classic vibe, for sure, but with your own unique result.

All the individual contributions combine to present a very nice whole, indeed. Kudos to all of you. ;)

Pouring rain
I made a recording several years ago where I threw in those sound effects throughout the song. That would have been a crime for this production, though. There were no mistakes to hide. These guys played flawlessly! I wanted every note to be heard! Thanks, Joe.

Rolling
That draws my attention to that switch Scott makes there at the last, which I love. I may have wanted to gradually layer it with more instruments as it drew to a close, but was happy with the length, (I could have listened to another five minutes of Anne!) Thanks for the comments, Mark

Sparky stuff.
Crackles with some kind of energy right from the start. I love the clear enunciation, it means I didn't have to read the lyrics to know what you were singing. Fine contributions from everybody including some amazing guitar. I love the backing vocals too, they make me want to write something that needs them just so I can get those ladies to sing for me...

Thanks for the kind comments. Bob always give a nice performance, and I was thrilled to get his guitar track. These artists continue to amaze me, and a Sister's harmony track is like gold for any song. Anne did a wonderful job. Andy's mando and Scott's drums and percussion, and then Neil's great bass. Carnegie Hall stuff, if I may say so myself! Love these guys!

The House of...
...the Rising Sun... No — not the topic at all, but the SOUND and the direction of the composition as well as the vocal and instrumental performance. This is a great story-telling sound/genre and you do it so well. I really like the rolling bass line that just keeps the song cookin' along from the get-go. Thoroughly enjoyed this very well-mixed, well-performed song. You guys are aces!!! (read that carefully..ha ha.)
