Song Of The Drowning Sailor

Description
The tune for this is a traditional sea shanty / whaling song.
“Rolling Down to Old Maui” I rewrote the lyrics for a recent Melbourne Fringe Festival (Australia) production “PETA and THE WHALE.” In this version (recorded for MacJams) I recorded the vocals first , I then added the instrumentation.

Lyrics
SONG OF THE DROWNING SAILOR Trad/ Franciscus Henri
ALBERT MUSIC

Oh my heart beats in the ocean deep and my soul turns on the wind
There are wondrous things of scales and fins
Ships of wood and canvas sails
But deep beneath the blue and green are things
You’ve never seen
Let’s go down below the sea my love
To places we’ve never seen

Going down into the sea my love
Going down into the sea
In the deep we’ll go sinking far below
Going down beneath the sea.

There’s a song I know from far below and it fills my heart with grief
There’s a sadness there that I cannot share
It would make your young heart grieve
For deep below the blue and green are sights
You’ve never seen
And where I call home are white bleached bones
The secrets of the sea.

Going down into the sea my love
Going down into the sea
There are secrets there that I cannot share
Going down into the sea.

Oh my ship lies lonely on the shore and it’s longing for the sea
I’ll unfurl my sail and ship away
If you’ll journey along with me
The sea is wide and the ocean deep
And this will be our song
That the lonely heart must sail the winds
To the place where it belongs

Going down into the sea my love
Going down into the sea
In the deep we’ll go sinking far below
Going down into the sea.

Song Of The Drowning Sailor
Franc! On a roll. Love the atmospheric intro and the deep, resonant, half spoken vocals. I felt submerged and subsumed in a sonic fluid. Your ability to "see" an arrangement and reproduce it is something special. Just wonderful. Many thanks.

Thanks Peter
I took an unusual approach in recording it in what would seem to be the wrong order but I think it worked. Now for the next one?

Full of atmosphere
Another sea going song this week - what a treat! This is immersive, not just because of the hook of your vocal and the lyrics, but the surrounding sounds that come and go as though echoing off of undersea cliffs and seamounts. Atmospheric and then some. Very creatively put together on top of the bones of a well sung song.

Song of the Drowning Sailor
Exceptional use of different instruments drifting in and out. Rich vocal. Very theatrical arrangement with plenty of interest in it. Sets an other-worldly scene. Excellent work, Franc!

Sad...ominous chant...
You really fill these lyrics with funeral gravitas. The dramatic presentation is arresting, haunting, and so well-conceived. My one nit is that you drop your vocal just a little at the end of quite of a few lines. ... Such an evocative song. Very unusual performance this is also very effective.
