Description
The events in Paris, a few weeks ago now, left me reeling. I know there were similar things going on elsewhere, but we have a personal, long-term connection with France, and a few good friends with family in Paris. So the attacks in Paris were personal. Fortunately, all are safe.
This song is my musical response.

Lyrics
What Kind Of Men Are They?
©2015 Neil Porter

I’ve been watching all the news today
Friends and strangers many miles away
I had to turn away I couldn’t look
What kind of men are they?

The world has changed again in just one night
Not much that I can do put things right
I had to turn away I couldn’t look
What kind of men are they?

I just want to know that you’re alright
I don’t understand what all this means
I’m far away from the city of light
Far away from the land of dreams

Now I’ve heard that you are all OK
The world can wake to face another day
I had to turn away I couldn’t look
What kind of men are they?

We’re all walking round on eggshells now
Life goes on, sometimes I don’t know how
I had to turn away I couldn’t look
What kind of men are they?

I just want to know that you’re alright
I don’t understand what all this means
I’m far away from the city of light
Far away from the land of dreams

Neil,
That is a powerful piece of music. Have no answers. So much for peace. It is disheartening to know more will come unless a miracle of some kind stops it. Thanks.

What kind?
Glad to hear you putting them out, Neil! This world today won't let "writer's block" sleep. This was a good one, and I like it a lot. Great music, great message!

Catches it perfectly
Such a pity songs like this have to be written.

Excellent work Neil.

What Kind Of Men Are They?
In a world where violent attacks are all too common, it's not every event that captures my interest or emotion, but the Paris attack did. Partly because of the inhumanity of such random slaughter, and also because I was there earlier this year and could easily have been sitting in one of those cafés.

Powerful story, well told. Excellent work, Neil.

You captured the emotion of this situation really well Neil. A very honest song finely performed and recorded.

Raw emotion
There are two distinct responses to a great song like this - musical and social.

The deep relentless bass and the discordant jangle of the rhythm guitar underscore the urgent theme of trying to come to grips with the evil that men do. The lead solo is interesting. I was probably expecting more drama - that you would come at it like the attackers did .. with a staccato of bulleted riffs and maybe a few big bangs .. but you reached for a deeper effect with unembellished emotion .. which is very effective.

This is not the kind of song you want to spend too much time working on. It's better to knock it out .. and let it bleed with the raw emotion of the moment.

I passed through Paris a week before the calamitous event; close enough to give pause. Having gone through the 9/11 terrorist attack here in New York City and its chilling aftermath my general response remains the same: to not give into fear and lose too much of my humanity while coping with the unimaginable. I think one of the ways we can do that is to respond with musical expression.

The world has changed....
...in just one night...
and the next day, and the next, and the next. There is no end, it seems. You have nicely captured the importance of holding loved ones close...protecting...caring. Would that that sentiment find a way to seep into the world's consciousness once again. Songs like yours offer hope. (Also, so beautifully and carefully recorded, two things I've come to expect and REspect in your writing.)

Thoughtful...
All the violence in the world, and the constant bombardment of instant real-time media updates can make anyone numb. This brings some heart back. Thx.

Bit late, Neil, sorry. Been fishing in south-western Victoria. The urgency is apparent from the get go. You have encapsulated the bewilderment of many, many ordinary people at the extent of the evil that men do. Pity of it all is that it is also happening with monotonous regularity in Algeria, Yemen, Lebanon, Pakistan, etc. etc. and it is 3 column inches of news... Really like the lyrics and the repeated "refrain". Thanks. Take care.

Thank you for producing such a wonderful response on the terrible strikes in Paris. I agree with DWL, this had to be written. Great work!

like the punchy intro
great tune with some interesting chord choices, that always catches my ears.

the world has turned a different corner. there are those that seem to want to bring an end to the world.... destroy everything because they can't mend their own fences.
