Lyrics
ACROSS THE WATER - Peter Bowen (May 2015) CAPO 2

[C] [Am] [G]

[C] I am [Am] waiting by the [G] water
[C] Looking [Am] out to [G] sea
[F] On a cold and distant [G] shoreline
[F] I hope you’re looking back at [G] me

[C] I feel you [Am] ‘cross the [G] water
[C] Your heart [Am] beats on the [G] wind
[F] And it won’t be long till this [G] rolling ocean
[F] Brings you back [G] again

Chorus
[Am] I miss you in the [G] morning
[Am] I yearn for you at [G] night
[Am] But come the hour our [G] love will
Shine a [C] light [Am] [G]
A flame will reig[C]nite [Am] [G]

[C] Your [Am] smile lights up the [G] water
[C] And your [Am] beauty warms my [G] heart
[F] Time have flown since we [G] held each other
[F] We’ve been too long [G] apart

[C] The [Am] tyranny of [G] distance
[C] O[Am]pined in verse and [G] song
[F] Has made this aching [G] heart grow fonder
[F] I hope it won't be [G] long

Chorus
[Am] Cause I miss you in the [G] morning
[Am] And I yearn for you at [G] night
[Am] But come the hour our [G] love will
Shine a [C] light [Am] [G]
It’ll be al[C]right [Am] [G]

Bridge
[Fm] Down there by the [C] dockside
[Fm] Your ship is squared [C] away
[Fm] The barquentine “Helena” [C][G/B][Am][G]
[F] Is making on its [G] way

[C] I'm still [Am] standing by the [G] water
[C] Looking [Am] out to [G] sea
[F] And I feel a flood of [G] deep emotion
[F] Cause you’re out there on [G] the rolling ocean
[F] And I know that you are [G] coming home to [C] me [Am] [G]
Heading back to [C] me [Am] [G]
To set me [C] free [Am] [G]
Please come home to [C] me [Am] [G]
[C] [F] [G] [C]

Glad you finally got round to this one
Very pretty song Peter. Nicely played and sung with just the right touch of backing synth. I'm also a sucker for songs about water/boats/ships/oceans and even lakes. Appreciate the download.

Evocative
Thanks, Doug. Yeah, songs about the sea, ships, etc. tend to be quite evocative. Everyone likes staring at the waves. Glad you thought this turned out okay. I appreciate your kind words. Take care.

Bright guitar tone. Tender lyrics and warm vocal. The organ is a nice touch. The simple arrangement keeps the song pure. Beautiful work!

Simple man, simple song... :-)
Thanks, Philip. I tried quite a few organs before hitting on this one. It seems to suit the song nicely. A simple folk song most often benefits from a simple approach. I am happy enough with the way this turned out. Talk soon.

Beautiful song, but the recording is not very clean. I guess it's a problem with your micro or a compression problem imho.

Investigate
Hi Harald. Thanks for finding time to listen. Glad you liked the song. Yeah, I agree that it does have some artefacts that intrude on the music. I think they could partly be due to my overuse of a stereo spreader on the two guitar tracks (p/u and mic). I will investigate. I appreciate your thoughts. Take care.

Enjoyable
Thanks, Dick. The song is probably a bit by-the-numbers, formularised folk but it is enjoyable to sing and play. I appreciate your dropping by. Take care.

Folky connection
Good playing and good singing, hard to beat that combination. That organ part is sitting just right.
Nits and suggestions? There are none invasive ways to remove the hiss from the track... on the bridge perhaps a bit of percussion to emphasize the rolling sea?
Thanks for sharing your talents with us here.

Could you repeat that? :-)
Thanks, Daug. Glad you thought this turned out okay. I was happy with how the organ turned out, too. Recording "live" guitar and vocals parts always brings some inherent sonic "noise" into the mix (with my gear and lack of expertise, anyway). I will go back and play around with the top end. I don't really find the hiss a real problem, though. Good headphones - failing hearing perhaps? I appreciate your insights. Take care.

Good song Peter
I like the song a lot and the performance works really well also. Good vocal and instrumentation. The hiss is something I reckon you should investigate though - it really does detract from the fine work you have done here in all other areas.
If you're up this way over Christmas or the new year, let me know and we'll try for some Shedding :)

To Shed, or not to Shed :-)
Thanks, Neil. Kind words. I will re-visit the hiss issue, but as i said to Daug (above), it doesn't really worry me that much. Jude is always telling me my hearing is going, though... Isotope make a product called RX 5 that appears to work wonders re audio repair (but it is costly...). No shedding over Xmas holidays (we are off to Norfolk Island) but I will try and get Philip up for a road trip next year. Hope you have a great break with family and friends. Take care.

Re-visit
Hey, Vic. Great to see you round again. I did get up to Seattle a couple of years ago and loved Puget Sound. Would like to get back there and explore more of the state, and down through Oregon, as well. Thanks for the kind words. I liked how the organ turned out, too. Take care.

Across The Water
Peter, so sorry for being so late on this tune ... I haven't been very active lately .. I seem to float in and out.
Across the water... solid songwriting. I have always been fond of an acoustic guitar/ organ combo. The only thing that hits me is the tone on the vocal ... it has a slight tin sound , thin ... I would fatten your vocal with some EQ or a tape emulator ... but maybe that's how you wanted it. Great song and performance Peter.
All the best in 2016

Late...
Not as late as I am in replying, Stan :-) Been travelling and having a break. Thanks for your kind words and thoughts on the song. Yes, I was happy with how the organ blended in. I didn't really pick the vocal as being thin but I respect your musical chops and I will re-visit. Hope you and the band have a great 2016. Take care.

across
this is pure 'country' to me....i hear a female voice singing close harmonies.
have you got some autotune going on - it really works here. the simple organ sound underneath is perfect.
dude this is a seriously good track - i would like to hear it with different lyrics that aren't about lost love etc....although i think the chorus is very catchy and the reigniting flame line is smart.
the beginning of the bridge doesn't flow for me....does it need one? what about an instrumental section with some other lead going over the top.
i'd love to have a copy of this to mess around with.
nice one peter - great indie movie soundtrack tune.
