Description
Last year I attended a guitar workshop where one of the presenters was Peppino D'Agostino, and I have followed his work since then. Recently he posted a tune using the alternate guitar tuning of CGDGAD, so I tried it. Peppino encouraged us to try various chord shapes to see what sounded good, and there's a bit of that in this song. While I was playing around with the tuning the words "She's the restless one" came to mind, and from that theme came the rest of the song. I sing it in the key of D, so the left channel guitar (with that alternate tuning) has a capo on the second fret. The guitar in the right channel is in standard tuning, with a capo on the 7th fret to provide a lighter, higher tone. Both are recorded using two inputs - one a mike and the plugged in- to fill out the tone. I added some strings and, from the bridge, a 12 string to help build up the arrangement. In the last verse there's also a strummed acoustic, also in the alternate tuning.

I asked for Peter Bowen's (PeterB7858) opinion and he gave some valuable advice on what I might have done with Logic Pro. This probably means I should strip this version back and take a different approach. I'll get to that, but for now there has just been a little tinkering...

The photo is from a Google search for girl in a café.

I hope you enjoy listening!

Lyrics
The Restless One

She’s sitting in a dark café on a busy Melbourne Street
Watching as the world goes walking by
She doesn’t seem to take it in, her mind is somewhere else
Filled with what is coming and with why

Walking down that busy street, one sultry summer’s day
She looks beyond the eyes of everyone
And past the gaudy windows that are beckoning to buy
She has her own agenda, she’s the restless one

Just when you think you’ve found her, she will disappear again
Into another life, another way
She’ll head off to the mountains, she will walk beside the sea
She’s looking for a path she is the restless one

I heard she was in Sydney at the bridge for New Year’s Eve
Then travelled up to Nimbin for a while

She won’t know what she’s finished, or what she has begun
’Cause when she’s gone she doesn’t look behind
She takes what she can carry and she never says goodbye
She’ll leave you where you stand, ’cause she’s the restless one
Don’t let her break your heart, she is the restless one.

The Restless One
I really like this song, Philip. The poetic lyrics tell an interesting, poignant story and your road-worn vocal work suits this style of song. I especially like the bridge and where it takes the us. CGDGAD tuning lends the song a melancholy air and the guitars work well together. There is more than one way to skin a cat in mixing/mastering and your approach works just fine. Kudos, my friend. Talk soon.

Pretty one
Open tunings are fun to experiment with. Sounds like you really hit a nice creative place while you were composing this. Well built arrangement and masterful playing. Beautiful sounds on this one, good job!

Not being a guitarist ...
... I freely confess that I do not fully understand the “musical mechanics” of these “tunings.”   Nevertheless, I can clearly appreciate the delicate harmonization of the tune, and the truly-amazing lyric.

In a few short paragraphs, you beautifully capture the ideal of the un-catchable female soul.

Alternate tunings can be endlessly fascinating! Peppino told us he could use up to 15 different tunings during the course of a concert. I'd find that testing! The main advantage of this one was the bass notes it gave - there's a resonance that isn't easy to get normally (although you can just get a bass player to help out!) Thanks for your comments on the song - they are much appreciated!

What I Like Most...

... about this recording and all of your recordings, is the honesty and sincerity that come through in your vocals, Philip. Whether spoken or sung, storytelling is an art — and you do it well. ;)

A question for you
I appreciate you taking the time to discuss some of your recording techniques (as well as detailing your progress as a result of taking a class).

I'm curious about the two-input guitar. Are you using an acoustic guitar with a built-in pick-up .. as well as setting a microphone to record the sounds coming off the guitar itself? I am assuming this technique wouldn't apply to a solid body electric guitar. (My own version of this experiment has been setting up two tracks for a guitar with close but slightly different effects .. and then panning them slightly apart. Then I try to play the same guitar line using identical notes or sometimes with harmonies. Kind of the same idea, although not exactly the same.)

Two tracks
Yes, Warren, an acoustic guitar with a built-in pickup. The mike gets the sound of the pure acoustic, the lead from the pickup gets a more electronic buzzy sort of sound. Not too much processing of them, but I usually have to do something to stop the bass notes taking over. That might be the "bright guitar" or "natural guitar" settings in Logic. These two recordings would both be panned to the same side, with one panned a bit further than the other. Then I usually record a second guitar, panning it to the other side of the stereo spectrum.

Then there are the times when I think I'm just muddying things up and go back to recording just using a mike and trying to capture the pure acoustic sound. There's always something new to try, isn't there?

Restless
I think that this is a lovely song Philip. Poignant but not overdone in any respect. Your guitar work is always spot on, and I'm always impressed at people who can get their heads around alternate tunings. (drop D is my boundary normally :) )

I thought of Gordon Lightfoot with your intro. Your tone is lovely, and the balance between the guitars and the strings (nice understated touch!) is well handled.

Appreciate the download sir!

First two chords...
...that you reprise from verse to verse are really beautiful...and, oh, the subtle strings that enter in just a bit later are so tastefully mixed into the accompaniment. Such a comfortable vocal rendition (as I'd expect) and a thoughtful narrative all serve to make this song just about as perfect as it could be: understated, sensitively performed, artfully conceived. A winner in my book. (Sorry I'm so late to hear this, but glad I did this morning.)

I was sure ...........
..... I'd commented on this Philip. Oops!
A nicely developed lyrical and musical story. For me, the mix/master works well, and your playing and singing are perfect for the song. If I was going to change anything, it would be the strings, but that's just a set I generally have against stringy bits - now if it was a B3, that would be different :)
One day I'll start trying some alt tunings.
Top post!

Neil

Glad you enjoyed it, Neil! Ah yes, the strings. I tend to use them just to add some colour or warmth, but it's usually better if I get someone who knows what they're doing to add them... Alternate tunings are interesting, especially for getting a different sort of sound into a chord progression - but for me me they some new complexities, too. Anyway. all good fun! What a very rich and warm sound you create, great finger picking, beautiful chords - I can imagine floating down a river on a raft to this.I think jiguma mentioned the strings - I think the synth sounds great tho it would be interesting to hear an orchestral sound - ideally a real 40 piece orchestra if you can just book one in and quickly jot down a score!
