Lyrics
Deliverance Road - Words and Music by Peter Bowen; Key: C Timing: 3/4 (May 2016)

[C] [Am] [Em] [G]
One way ticket to nowhere
[C] [Am] [D7sus2] [G]
Romancing that broken white line
[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Moving forward? Or running away?
[Dm] [Am] [G] [G]
Guess I’ll find out in time

[C] [Am] [Em] [G]
Gave up my job in the city
[C] [Am] [D7sus2] [G]
Gave up my tattered dreams, too
[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Faded photographs, washed-out and worn
[Dm] [D7sus2] [G] [G]
My only memories of you

[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Another song for the highway
[Dm] [Am] [G] [G]
Another chance to reload
[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Another broken heart hoping to find
[Bb] [Bb] [G] [G]
Deliverance on the road

[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Life is stretched out before me
[Dm] [Am] [G] [G]
Writ large in the dusty outback
[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Looking for meaning and true peace of mind
[Dm] [G] [C] [C]
Who knows what I’ll find down the track?

Lead over two verses

[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Another song for the highway
[Dm] [Am] [G] [G]
Another chance to reload
[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Another broken heart hoping to find
[Bb] [Bb] [G] [G]
Deliverance on the road

[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Life is stretched out before me
[Dm] [Am] [G] [G]
Writ large in the dusty outback
[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Looking for meaning and true peace of mind
[Dm] [G] [C] [C]
Who knows what I’ll find down the track?
[F] [G] [C] [Am]
Looking for meaning and true peace of mind
[Dm] [Dm] [G] [G] [C] [C]
Who knows what I’ll find down the track?

Almost
has and escapist feel from the lyrics. Just board up and go with no specific destination. One side a little sad and another adventurous. Enjoyed how the melody conveyed the feel.

Escapee
Thanks, Sam. Yes, there is a bittersweet element to the song. I hope things turn out okay for him :-) Take care.

A lovely piece of work Peter. I loved the line "Faded photographs, washed out and worn". Thanks for writing out the chords too. I'll have a play along with this one for sure.

Counterpoint
Glad you liked this, Dean. I had to try and ensure the lyrics were expressive to counterpoint the predictable folk approach. Thanks for dropping by.

Hey, we have roads like that in the Canadian parries where you can watch your dog run away for hours....
Stripped, simple and beautiful. You write good songs Peter.
With all the amazing production available at your fingertips there's nothing like vocal and acoustic performed and recorded live.
Words flow comfortably with the feel ...

Mature over time
Thanks, Stan. Yes, there is something about a long, straight stretch of open road (unless you are walking... :-)). Hopefully the singer/songwriter performance will mature over time and become a bit more polished and sophisticated. I have already changed the solo since I recorded this. I appreciate your kind words. Take care.

Deliverance Road
Has a very "sitting in the lounge room listening live" feel to it - very close, warm and intimate. Gently reflective lyrics. Nice flow to the chords. Will you be trying this out at the Heidelberg Market?

Winter...
Thanks, Philip. I just had this Pete Seeger moment that had to get out :-) I hope the song will develop a touch more character as I ease my way into it. No market gig in the near future. The footy takes a chunk out of the weekend and getting up early Sunday morning to play for around two and a half hours straight in the cold, outdoors loses its appeal in winter... Talk soon.

Nice tune Peter - You get such a warm, rich tone from your acoustic. I can relate to the lyric - sometimes the best thing one can do is go find a long deserted road to travel - provides lots of opportunity for introspection. Roads like that are rare in overcrowded Southern California! You've written another fine tune, my friend - enjoyed!

Infancy
Thanks, Sig. I appreciate your thoughts and kind words. The song is really in its infancy but I hadn't posted a solo acoustic number for a while so I thought I would put it out there to see what kind of reaction it got. I have this non-folk version forming in my mind... :-) Take care.

The road
Thanks, Tim. Just running down the road trying to loosen my load... :-) And yes, the guitar is a gem. I am very lucky it found me.

Wow!
Pete buddy! Great song and performance. Love that sweet melody bouncing around that nice chord progression. Lots of highway songs out there but you put such a perfect fresh face on it. Beautiful, loved it!

Not Seeger!
Pete just read some of your comments. Way too hard on yourself. This is not a Seegar type folk song. More like a John Denver pop one. Even heard a little Beatles in there. As for getting more character and sophistication, you know I like it a little rough (although for me this would be smooth) so it was perfect for my taste.

Very kind words
Thanks, Tom. Very kind words. Glad you liked it. I'm sure you find the same as me, that once you play a song over a period of time, you really ease into it and it frees your singing and playing up a bit. I suppose that's where I want to get to with this one. I appreciate your kind words.
And, yes, you are right, it is more John Denver that Pete. Take care.

Another song for the highway
Great song. It's a very good vocal melody. Too many singer/songwriters fall short in that respect.

Cool
And nice. Nice and cool. A 70's singer/songwriter feel which is most welcome this sultry May evening.

Escape?
Thanks, Graham. Yes, I always slip back into the 70's singer/songwriter style when I pick up an acoustic. Can't be helped. And, in truth, not sure if I want to escape from there, anyway :-) Take care.
