Well, Richard got the old version thing going. Here's my version of the song from a 2005 recording, with an EQ tweak or two .

Lyrics
SONNET 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st;
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

I think your idea 1 inspired my idea 1
I have a demo you sent to Mike Lavoie and me two days before I did my idea 1. I think the problem is that I only knew two chords at the time and thus my rendition was boring. Your chord map which starts out with a dreamy Amaj7 was brilliant and very artful. I ended up singing your version (our chosen version) at Old Man River Cafe. Katchoolik and his girlfriend flew out to St. Paul to watch my band play. I couldn't coax Johnny into playing.

Thou Art More Lovely
Very nice Jack. I really do like this warm sunny song.
Good job on the vocals and the performance has a wonderful airiness about it.

Flashback
I think MacJam years are equivalent to dog years, in that things seem a lot older than they really are. This takes me back to when I initially joined the site and started listening skeptically .. and then I came across the Postludes production of one of Shakespeare's sonnets and concluded something special was going on. I've been engaged ever since : )

Warren...
Your comment is really such a compliment, almost too much. Rich, Mike, and I were one of the early collabs at MJ, true. I had listened to a song by Rich and thought, this guy has the voice to sing a sonnet. I went to work. Then ask Rich to sing and we then asked Mike to play acoustic guitar. We were flying, as the say, by the seat of our pants. Great times, great memories, and very gracious comment by you. Thanks... and so glad this was part of the reason why you stayed...

You got me...
...with No. 18, my absolutely favorite of the Bard's poems. You do a rather wistful job with the music and presentation, very much supported by your song art (above). It is amazing that this little sonnet has lasted the test of time so well, giving credence to the final two lines. I really enjoyed hearing your gentle music composed to this lovely love poem. Very very nice, indeed.

Ah, the bard. With this lyrics you can't go wrong, really. Nice light, warm version, Jack.

The Bard...
Indeed. Richard and I did a number of Shakespeare songs back in the 2004-2006 season. You can find the originals (early years) and some alternative renditions at Postludes Trio. It was one of the first collaboration bands at MacJams. Postludes Trio also did collaborative songs of varying genres with other MJers.

Philip, thanks for your gracious comments!
