Lyrics
Closer to Fire

I remember every line you carved into my soul
disregarded vows of love come drifting down below
a scarecrow points the way up yonder there now must I go
soaring high above your anger reap now wahat you sew

I can't even see your face now
the road leads ever steep and narrow
but if you should ever wonder why
I live life as if soon we must die..
-----------------------------------
Well we all fall closer to fire
And we all chase dreams and desire
Mountains lead us nearer to heaven
So you only breathe while you can feel the rain
-----------------------------------
Tie my hands and feet with freedom
shine on all these days
try to break my wings ascending in your lonely haze
theres none so bold as those who dive head-first into the storm
leave your cloak and dagger on the nail behind the door

I can't promise you the earth now
the roads lead steep and narrow
but if you never ask me why
I crowned you beneath the endless sky
-----------------------------------
Well we all fall closer to fire
And we all chase dreams and desire
Mountains lead us nearer to heaven
So you only breathe while you can feel the rain

Yeah
I get over here to MacJams for the first time in a couple of months, and here you are, making excellent music. Great instrumentals, and you have a really distinctive voice (I mean that in a good way, of course!)

Thank you
believe me its taken maximum effort to come up with anything I actually wanted to record - whereas when I was younger I used to just doze in bed in the morning and lyrcis just used to appear in my head - i'd think yeah write a song about riding a motorbike or going to fight in the army - it never mattered if I'd had any experience of those things,I just had a headful of ideas. - This time,I found I had to be just away from everyone and everything and lying in a hammock for about 2 weeks before I even unzipped the guitar case.either that or sitting on my accordian case contemplating the horizon bu not actually getting it out and playing it.I just never realised how much junk is going on in my head - its like hard to focus on one thought.Anyway am glad I got a few ideas, and hoping to go back soon if it would just stop raining!

Everything
About this song has so many different meaning its a story about space travel but sung in a folk style, the singing on this flows right along with the guitar sounds like one take , beautiful and bright mix awesome!

thank you
youre right - it was one take - well,I forgot to read the manual to this boss br before i went and had meant to look up how you bounce tracks - cos its only got 4 tracks but you can bounce them to free up some tracks.I try and avoid doing this - but you can make a copy of the whole song and mess around with it then without messing the first copy up.so yeah - it was guitar and vocal on 1,then guitar & vocal on 2 then accordian on 3 then i think it was a harmony vocal on 4.I know there was alot of biting midges outside so I was recording all hunched up inside - thats why theres a bit of cussing at the start, its when you move and realise you are going to have very bad pins and needles! but I think possibly the confined space makes for quite a nice dry sound.Great comments - thank you again

Impressive stuff Richard
Performance is only outdone by the recording - sound quality (for "camping on a hill") is pretty amazing. I'm really enjoying the words and instrumentation.
Just an overall great post.
Nice to run into you back here at MJ.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Thanks Neil
Its been a pleasure getting back into doing some recording - the only disadvantage of the boss micro (now discontinued) is that it eats batteries like a monster.I found it best to have the song/track practised to as perfect as you could before turning on.but then I used up loads up listening back to it.My regards to Oz - think my sister is on holiday there at the moment

Superb
Sometimes I can listen and comment on the piece as it plays. Not this time. I just had to sit back and fully appreciate all you've woven together here. I could rave about all aspects but it would seem to miss the mark. Thanks for posting this one Richard, and for allowing it to be downloaded.

Cheers.

Your command of the english language is excellent!
I'm just in awe of how you construct your sentences, doug - when I go to comment on peoples songs I find myself tongue-tied,bit like writing lyrics in fact and always end up saying the word great! anyway, thank you very much, doug

Closer to Fire
I like the rhythm you use for this - nice traditional sound to it. The vocals are beautifully done - the harmonies work very well. Variety added with the accordion. Impressive work, Rich!

All of this on a MicroBR...
The guitar is super crisp, and the voices are warm and furry...

I like the left and right guitars with the accordion up the middle...

The rhythm is neat, and the shift to minor is a neat change-up...

AND...the lyrics are neat...
