Those Years In Between

Description
Another entry in the "Senior Angst" genre .. which of course doesn't actually exist here at MacJams .. but it should .. because I seem to keep writing songs for that category. It must have something to do with where I am in Life : )

Lyrics
THOSE YEARS IN BETWEEN [Buckley Smith]

Your most recent art
looks like an abstracted fart
with its Andy Warhol tangerine silk screen sheen
you had the potential
but lost the essential
integrity to say what you mean
you went from self-satisfied youth
to dissatisfied senior
as you spilled your seed
to dress yourself in tweed
from a hardcore punk
to a dissipated drunk
those years in between
what did they mean?
those years in between
what did they mean?

Puppies frolic in the sun
while old dogs howl at the moon
young cats shuck and jive
with a total thrombone for life
but old cats only remember they're alive
when someone cleans their litter box
those years in between
what did they mean?

Your uncritical involvement
with women, wine, and work
left you in doubt, in detox, and an insolvent jerk
the first penny you pitched
made someone else rich
and your last penny covered only one eye
those years in between
what did the mean?
those years in between
what did they mean?
those years in between
what did they mean?
those years in between
what did they mean?

Senior angst? Naw, consciousness awakened.
No backup in the thing! Keep going forward.
There appears to be more clean in the guitar department, the instrumental section works nicely.
I have a challenge for ya. Take a favorite sound profile. A mix ya really dig. And add it to your Daw as a reference.
As ya mix yer tune refer to the gold standard and find ways to match yer tune to the favorite's profile. An easy method to improve yer mix...

Hah ha ha .. what's that Satchel Paige (the great baseball player) line? - "Don't look back .. something might be gaining on you!"

That sounds like a good method for improving a mix. It's no secret I don't spend a lot of time trying to get radio-ready productions. Things have improved due to better equipment and feedback from folks like you here at MacJams. My inclinations simply lie elsewhere when it comes to making music .. and the time I have to allot to my songs mostly goes into structural considerations, sound combinations, melodic development, lyrical writing and vocal phrasing. Much of the joy comes from the surprises that happen during development - when a song expands in an unexpected way or heads off in an unanticipated direction. I get what you are saying .. but trying to match to a favorite seems to run counter-productive to my method of formation. Consciousness awakening? Is that the same thing as learning to live with your flaws?

Of course, it could mean I'm an old dog unable to adopt a new trick : )

Classic lyrics. I smiled lots. Those years in between have developed a creative, critical musical eye and a style all your own. Still crazy after all these years... Thanks.

A play within a song
Back in those early days I used to write plays .. but I gave it up to concentrate on writing songs : )

Yep, this'll do it for me - lots of what I love - strangely very hooky as well. Totally original and compelling beyond. I'm jealous.

Those years in between
So many great lines in this song Warren. Another genre defying creation. Is it autobiographical? I loved the instrumental arrangement although that picture of those wormy looking things may induce nightmares to some.

Clarifications
Lyrics co-written with my long-time collaborator Roy Buckley, so I can't take all of the credit those mental leaps. Everything I/we write is/is not autobiographical. I hope that clarifies things.

Walkers and Rollers
What? Hasn't MacJams basically turned into a senior center? We may get the occasional younger visitor, but the permanent residents are mostly life veterans : )

Anyway - thanks for listening and leaving a comment.

Can you read my mind Warren?
Another great set of words in your inimmitable style.
"Don't look back .. something might be gaining on you!" - wish I'd thought of that. I do like the song art - is that yours?
Cheers,
Neil

Drawing
It's difficult to say what I find more artistically challenging/rewarding - noodling on the guitar .. or doodling with a drawing instrument. The above posted abstraction is a pencil drawing that has been shadowed with black ballpoint. The tonal effect happens rather randomly because the pencil has four different colors built into the tip .. although I like to think I exert a modicum of control over the execution : )

Born in a Minnesota blizzard, I'm now residing in a coastal heat of Brooklyn, New York City. I recorded my first original composition as a teenager using a reel-to-reel tape recorder back in 1967, and I'm still finding it a creative challenge... [see more]
