Description
For Anne

Pure schmaltz, plain and simple.

This tune was composed and written about 30 years ago and existed until recently as a literal sketch (in pencil on pink lined paper). I rediscovered it recently and decided to record it as a tribute to my late wife Anne, who died last year. We married in 1966 at the tender ages of 20 and 21. She always supported my music making (she bought me a keyboard one Christmas and the Alchemy software another) along with almost everything else I did. I still think of her every day and miss her most of them, but know that she is now free from all pain or stress and I have come to terms with her passing. Fortunately, the piece is not melancholy or sombre but, as I said above, pure schmaltz ;-) (The art is by Jim Esc at DeviantArt)

Darling, I love you.

Lyrics
Once upon an evening
not so long ago
you and I were dancing
music soft and low
arms around each other
vowing to be true
so much in that whisper
darling, I love you

We were both enchanted
lost in space and time
you knew I was yours dear
I knew you were mine
off into a lifetime
hand in hand we flew
silent as a whisper
darling, I love you

Darling, I Love You
Beautiful work, Richard. The spoken word can be very powerful, as is the case here. Gentle backing supports the words well. Very sorry to hear about your wife - no doubt a devastating time for you.

Thanks Philip
I mainly use the spoken word because I can't sing; glad you like them.
Not quite devastating, but close ;-)

Schmaltz? Not here!
Naw... you gotta take credit for a cathartic piece of art here. We make our pain into things which make us stronger. No apology is necessary... I was surprised when I heard the word "enchantment" in the lyric and a certain device did not appear, my ear put the thing in of course...
Schmaltz leaves an ugly stain on the ears... that does not happen here, even after a few listens! Welcome back- great work!

I guess it was/is cathartic
Thanks James. I sincerely hope that after a few listens the stains are only mild.
Device?

Really
touching Richard and so well performed.....love the sincerity in your spoken words..... and they are lovely words. The synth backing really does add to a mood of loneliness and I'm so sorry for your loss, regards M

They sound sincere
because they are sincere, Mo. I wrote them 30 years ago - I meant them then and I mean them now. Thanks for the "lovely" and the sympathy.

Nothing wrong with schmaltz
beautifully heartfelt.

A very sympathetic arrangement supports the words without overwhelming them.

I know how it feels to lose a wife and I'm pleased you have come to terms with it.

Peace

What they said
Sorry about your wife and well done with this slightly understated piece, which btw I feel is rather melancholy (a favourite feeling of mine!), but maybe that's a Scandinavian thing ;-)

Sure does not feel like two years have passed since your latest upload, but time really flies as you grow older... :-/

Thanks for posting this one, which also reminded me of an old song I posted here 10 years ago(!), Song of My Beloved. Inspired by C.S. Lewis but might just be of some interest for you at this point, I don't know...

Take care,
Henke

I think I was going for melancholy
maybe there's a little scandinavian in me ;-)
I'm listening to yours as I type and it sounds wonderful, almost (except for the music, though it beautifully sets the mood) like a saga retold around the campfire. Mostly my imagination and your language.
Cheers.

Really moving
Such a moving and heartwarming tribute and I am so sorry for your loss. The arrangement behind the words make this something really special. So another MJ'r returns after quite a gap?, ....there's been a few of us this year!

It's not "schmaltz" ... no, not at all ...
... the opening and ending strings sing of heartache ...

Yes, it is not melancholy nor is it sombre, but it is beautiful ... gorgeous ... and from the depths of the heart.

I'm quite sure that she i-s happy with it, too.   The two of you will have so much happiness one day very soon, discussing it together.

To her memory.

To her.
