The Greenwich Line

Description
I wrote this song a while ago and didn't get around to recording it until now.

The lyrics flowed from the intro guitar noodle (as is often the case with me).

A ye olde "let's get the hell out of rainy, cold England" vibe :-)

As it happens, it miraculously started to rain in sunny Melbourne whilst I recording this and you can hear it on the recording towards the end. I left it in so my friends in England would feel at home :-)

PRS Angelus and me.

See what you think.

Regards, Peter.

Lyrics
The Greenwich Line - Peter Bowen (February 2016) CAPO 3 3/4

Verse 1
I’m [Am] leaving [G] here in the [Am] morning
For [Am] fortune [G] and liber[Am]ty

We [Am] sail for the [G] Cape on the [Am] high tide
And [Am] bid this cold [G] land [Am] adieu
Our [Am] heading will [G] go, [Dm] where the four winds [Am] blow
By the [Am] grace of the [G] captain and his [Am] crew

Chorus 1
[Dm] Fare thee well my bonnie [Am] lassie

I think
you sing and play beautifully: the tone of the PRS compliments the timbre of your voice. The lyrics are firmly in the tradition of sea-faring folk songs with lovers and mothers left behind. A lovely listen this morning and I thank you for the d/l.

Mothers and lovers left behind...
Thanks, Richard. I appreciate your kind words. "Mothers and lovers left behind", I like that. Thanks for the compliment of a D/L, as well. Take care.

Bed it down
Thanks, KC. I have been playing it for while without seriously recording it and I guess that has helped bed it down a bit. Glad you enjoyed the voyage. Take care.

Fitting
Thanks, Philip. It is getting harder to record in a noise free environment at our house. The volume of traffic on the street seems to have grown considerably. I got up at 4.30 in the morning to try and get some quiet time - and it started to rain... Fitting really. Talk soon.

In the Way
The three Ts are here: tone, taste and tenacity! The foundation holds up a great ballad.
My compliments on the playing and singing. The arrangement works great.
The tradition from which this tune is drawn goes back at least to the 1770s. Yet the tune can be heard as fresh today. Music is the best. This one is proof.

Musical traditions
Thanks, Daug. Kind words. And, yes, it is great to be able to draw on all sorts of musical traditions and give them a contemporary wash. Glad you liked it. Take care.

Emotive.
Yes, very emotive, yet still plenty of subtlety in the guitar playing. Almost like time travelling to the days when sailing out into the empire was a real adventure into the unknown. Had to download this, thanks for making it available.

Hoist the mainsail!
Thanks FA. That rolling 3/4 gait will get you thinking about the sea before you can say "Hoist the Mainsail". :-) Glad you liked how this turned out. The D/L is much appreciated. Take care.

Really strikes a chord with me.... Being from a long line of sailors, some from England, HMS Hood and the Forgotten Bastards of Iceland. May their souls be at rest. Blessings!

Cold, mountainous seas...
Hi Andy. Glad it stuck a chord. I had to look up the net about the "FBI". Sounds like they knew all about cold, mountainous seas. Rest their souls. Thanks.

Wow
A more reflective and tender song of the sea than most shanties (as appropriate to the topic of course!). One of the best I've heard from you Peter. All measures are reading full scale. A wonderfully told story. I will play it on my boat next summer. Thank you for the download!!

Daunting
Hey Doug, thanks. Yes, it is quite a tender song. It must have been pretty daunting, and exhilarating at the same time, to head off from England on a leaky, sailing boat into the unknown. I hope this sounds authentic when you get around to playing it on your boat. Take care.
