The Lesson (for Richard Adams)

Description
This song is based on some of the ideas in the novel Watership Down by Richard Adams, who died on Christmas eve at the age of 96. I wrote the song some years ago, and a version of it was the first song I ever submitted to MacJams; however, this is a newer version. To see where the thoughts come from, read the extract from Watership Down contained in this piece: http://www.vox.com/culture/2016/12/27/14092022/richard-adams-watership-down

Lyrics
The Lesson (Song for Children)

Gather round children I’ll sing you a song
Of birds and the leaves and the land
It tells of the flowers and songs that they sing
And how they can lend you a hand
And all of the leaves are a lesson you’re learning
And what you are seeing is what I’ve been sowing
They’ve grown

Children your laughter will give you your daydreams
Facing whatever you find
Playing your games that you played in the meadow
Asking the trees if they mind
Seeing the living that runs all around you
Hurting no one cause they never hurt you
You have grown

Children your faces will live in tomorrow
You’ll step outside of today
You’ll question the answers and answer the questions
Of those who have all had their say
You’ll see the sunshine come into the meadow
And over the fields you will lead us
And take us away

Then when you’re tired as I’m feeling now
And children are playing your games
You’ll see a friend who will tell you he knows you
He’s watched you and helped you to change
Now he will show there’s hope and he’ll lead you
Out of your body and over the meadow
To children and laughter and songs we can sing
Now we’re free

Nature's Hand
Just splendid. Kudos!
Production works perfectly to support the material. A nit? No vocal harmony on the tag.

Glad you enjoyed it, Daug. A little challenge - perhaps you could help out with that vocal harmony?

I could recommend
a couple of folks. "The Squirrels" would be my go to guys, great harmony singers and righteous people. Another guy who could do this kind of work is Sammy. My geese fart inspired harmony might interfere with the vibe...lol.

Good idea
I have now started thinking about a song which would require a geese fart harmony. Should be a hit!

The Lesson
I've always liked this one. The upbeat 3/4 folk beat works a treat. The lyrics are positive and engaging. The accompanying guitars sounds just right. A fine post. When's the children's album coming out? :-) Talk soon.

Be as children
"Out of your body and over the meadow
To children and laughter and songs we can sing"

Great lyrics. Well sung. You gave me a lift! I am fortunate to have 5 grandkids who keep me young. Such a blessing to receive infectious laughter from youth.

I read
that some time back in my preteen years. I think I remember reading Animal Farm around that same time. Though Farm left more of a 'mark,' I do remember enjoying both. Very nice to hear the homage.

I didn't like the book much, but it and the movie were all worth it for the kid on TV singing "Bright Eyes" wearing a rabbit suit. I expect he's on YouTube. But back to your music. Bright, well - played folk tribute to a favourite book.
