Description
Country folk 101.
Boy meets girl. Boy takes girl for granted. Girl tells boy to get lost. Boy is sad. Girl gives boy second chance...
Has he learned his lesson?
Probably not. :-)
I wrote most of this song down at Mallacoota, in far east Victoria, recently. Omeo, Bruthen and Eden are surrounding towns.
Feel free to insert your own :-)
PRS Angelus and me. Single takes tidied up in Logic.
Could probably be arranged up if anyone felt inclined...

Lyrics
Lifeline - Peter Bowen (January 2017) 6/8 CAPO 4

[C] [G] [Am] [F]
[C] [G] [F] [C]

[C] Twenty miles south out of [G] Omeo
[Am] She stopped the car and [F] told me to go
The [C] look on her face was so [G] sad, I'll never for[F]get

I [C] turned round to speak, but found [G] no words to say
Got [Am] out in the rain and that [F] car drove away
As the [C] lights disappeared round the [G] bend, I was filled with re[F]gret

[G] My sweet, gentle [F] Adeline
[G] The only true [F] love of mine
Was [G] heading off [F] down the line

I [C] hitched into Bruthen and [G] went to the park
Sat [Am] in the rotunda un[F]til it was dark
Lay [C] down on the bench and I [G] tried not to think what I'd [F] done

But [C] sleep wouldn't come and she [G] flooded my thoughts
The [Am] recriminations, they [F] circled like hawks
I [C] looked for excuses. [G] Concluded that there were [F] none...

[G] My sweet, gentle [F] Adeline
[G] The only true [F] love of mine
[G] Had tired of my [F] silly, selfish [Am] ways…[G]…[F]
And the petty power [Am] plays…[G]…[F]

[Em] Remorseful and [F] restless
[Em] I promised the [F] night
[Em] If given the [F] chance
[Dm7] I would make things all [G] right [(run down)]

[C] Soon after first light, I [G] shouldered my load
[Am] Grabbed a black coffee and walked [F] down the road
I [C] headed for Eden, a [G] place that I'd never been [F]

Then the [C] blare from a car horn scared [G] me half to death
When she [Am] pulled along side, I held [F] onto my breath
Till she [C] smiled through the window and [G] motioned for me to get in [F]

[G] My sweet, gentle [F] Adeline
[G] The only true [F] love of mine
[G] Threw me a [F] lifeline that [Am] day [F]

[G] Sweet, gentle [F] Adeline
[G] The only true [F] love of mine
[G] I’ll cherish [F] you for all [C] time...

.. [G] [Am] [F]
[C] [G] [F] [C]

Not so sweet and gentle Adeline if she can make you get out of a car 20 milers out of Omeo! Anyway, leaving that aside, the song has a story to tell and tells it warmly. Beautiful guitar tone, emotive vocal. Might be interesting to try it another 5 or 10 bpm faster and see what that did? Good one, my friend!

Adeline by any other name...
Thanks, Philip. Adeline was originally Caroline and then Madeline :-) I recorded the PRS with my Zoom H2 and tidied it up in Logic. It's easy and works quite well. Used the Shure Super 58a on the vocal. I will speed it up a touch in Logic and take a listen. Talk soon!

Sweet gentle playing
You tell a great story Peter. Very descriptive and it brings the listener right into the story as if we were a fly on the wall.

Just a jerk...
Thanks, Dean. Glad you felt enmeshed in Adeline's trials and tribulations :-) A female friend of mine thought it was a "domestic violence" situation but I assured her he was really not that sort of guy. Just a jerk :-) I appreciate your kind words. Take care.

Much enjoyed Peter
Lovely well considered lyrics, sung beautifully....voice sounds great and the guitar accompaniment too, so sympathetic....a real 'one take' beauty.......loved it; regards M

"Technique" :-)
Thanks, Maurice. The story flowed from the first line which came from mumbling over the guitar riff. My favourite song-writing "technique" :-) Glad you liked how it turned out. Thanks.

Two
absolutely solid songs in a row? I think 2017 is like a Peter's greatest and it's just starting.

Year of the Fire Rooster
Thanks, Sam. I already have another written song I like, as well, so the "year of the fire rooster" might be a good one. That, or I am peaking too early... :-) Take care, my friend. Talk soon.

Simple story
Thanks, Dick. Kind words. The story is a simple one but it does have the requisite elements of drama, remorse and renewal :-) Glad you liked it. Take care.

Peter, you have a great knack of coming up with a story in your lyrics... very James Taylorish.

great performance as always.

Rubbed off
JT is one on my main musical/songwriting influences, so I suppose something must rub off. Glad you liked how this turned out. Thanks, as always.

Mmmmm...
Always look forward to your posts Peter. It arouses the old folkie in me (and that's a GOOD thing). I'm a sucker for a moody song of loss. So good!

Guitar sounds great as usual, but your vocal delivery is the outstanding factor here. Truly top notch!

Be well friend!

Fanned the flames...
Thanks, Mike. There's nothing more embarrassing than an aroused old folkie! :-) Glad you thought the song fanned the flames. I appreciate your generous support, as always. Take care.

Lifeline
Hi Peter - I like this a lot - I think I'm hearing a hard rock version (just kidding). Actually, I'd definitely have to take this one in a different (well, slightly different) direction, but I'm up for the challenge! Enjoyed my friend!

Thanks, Sig. If you can turn this into a hard rock song you are a wizard :-) Glad you like it. I have emailed you re this and slipped another song in for your consideration, as well. Talk soon, my friend. Take care.

Sorry Peter
I thought I'd left a comment before and I'd be remiss if I didn't. This is a lovely story and your playing and vocal sound delicious and just so natural. Another beauty! Thanks, and cheers.

Appreciative
Thanks, Richard. Glad you liked the song. I'm fairly happy with how it has shaped up. Now I just have to record it properly and give it some harmonies and some instrumentation. I appreciate your kind words. Take care.

Great story telling
hey Peter this story tells a well worn story very well and I really like the chorus... Adeline...what a great name. it works really well as a simple guitar vocal piece. Good post. Cheers mark

Trials and tribulations
Thanks, Mark. Yeah, it tells a simple, but hopefully, engaging story about the trials and tribulations of our heroine, Adeline :-) I like singing it. I appreciate your kind words. Take care.

Nice part of the world...
Thanks, Franc. I am a bit of a sucker for telling a story in a song. I must try writing something more abstract - but I am a pretty linear type of person :-) And, yeah, we head down that way a fair bit (friends at Mallacoota, fishing at Bemm River, etc.). Nice part of the world. Best to stay in the car when going through Cann River, though :-) Take care.

A great song Peter - performed with the raw tinge of emotion which comes from the decisions you describe. Nicely done. Nicely done.

Word play
There's always Evangeline and Turpentine to try, too : )

Nicely played and sung, but what I like most is the adroit rhymes that work time after time, especially "thoughts .. circling like hawks." Good writing!

Top 20 girls' names...
Thanks for the kudos re the lyrics, Warren. Adroit rhymes - I like that. Yeah, I don't know how many Adeline's there are in Australia but I'm guessing its not in the top 20 list. Turpentine... even less so :-) Glad you liked it. Take care.
